1.

Manos Manu was running his fingertip along the spines of books, as if automatically scanning their contents. He knew his data would be crystal-clear seen below the Singapore sun which grew hotter every day, but for the moment it was as though he could hear it, the data echoing like the descending scales of a piano, every note feeding a neural network. From one shelf to the next, his query never wavered: What is the soul?

“Bye, Baby! Planning on wasting much time there?” Blowing a kiss over her lovely shoulder, Mei was gone.

Leaving what? Artificial intelligence has consciousness, even ingenuity. So what sets machines apart from humans besides the soul?

He turned back to the books. There weren’t that many: Barber’s Bayesian Reasoning, works of Bishop and Hinton, Sutton’s Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction, and a few titles about neural nets. There was also an untouched Michael Crichton mystery, though not Jurassic Park. But such was Mei. If you want history, she’d say, read papers. If you want to learn, read code. If you need to know what people are saying about a piece of code, jump on X. Books were about as useful to AI as military theory was on the battlefield. What you need in the trenches is ammunition. In AI, just code. Just GitHub, the goings-on of which were too big for any conceivable library.

He also couldn’t stop thinking of Lena Sideris. In the two months since his return from Greece he kept remembering her body, cut open on a marble table like a broken porcelain doll being sent back to the factory. Her eyes glassy orbs. Did they hold consciousness? Emotion? They didn’t. A soul? He didn’t trace the spines of books now, but grabbed one of Barber’s works, opened to a random page and ripped it out. He returned it to the shelf, moving on to Sutton and all the others, tearing out a page from each one till he had about fifty. Incomplete, these books would now confront anyone reading them with inconsistency. Making sure the books were replaced perfectly so that Mei would never notice, he shredded the pages in his hands till they looked like ticker-tape confetti and went back out onto the balcony.

Different weather awaited him. Broad heavy clouds skittered across the sun’s rays, leaving traces as if from speeding aircraft. He threw some of the shreds over the glass railing, where the wind swept them past the ceiling, high overhead. He hurled the rest into the air and stared, mesmerized by their flight.

Was this a gesture Artificial General Intelligence would choose to make?

It wasn’t. An AGI would have carefully selected which pages to discard. He’d barely thought to read them.

This was futile, illogical, diabolical. He’d destroyed books from his beloved’s library.

And he felt wonderful.

Was this having a soul? He’d committed a decidedly wicked act. This is what separates us from machines. Evil.

Then he remembered what he’d been trying to forget: And murder.

2.

It was Sunday morning and the first time she’d left him alone at her place. Before long, he received a message to meet up for brunch at Marina Bay. Mei would also swing by the office for the latest build of Mei-Nu, which was the name of their custom-made dating platform. They’d sifted through the crawled data correlating user profiles from sites like Tinder, Bubble, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Lovoo, elaborating a few of their own layers beyond basic personality tests. But both knew Myers-Briggs would only get them so far.

They needed more and better data: time to start seeing other people.

He arrived at Jypsy, late as usual. Mei was already seated with a couple at a table overlooking the Marina.

“And here’s Manos!” Mei called, with a cheerful smile.

“Sorry. Traffic,” he mumbled, his eyes fixed on his new date.

Her name was Daria, a pretty twenty-seven year old maritime attorney. She was of average build with big Anime eyes. Her psychometrics had indicated she was the enfp type, matching well with Manos’ intj. Creative, funny, a communicator. A handful, like him. He glanced over at Mei’s match, who was clearly regretting he’d come at all.

Mei launched their routine: “Thanks so much for meeting like this. I just wouldn’t feel comfortable by myself. Manos is a faithful friend.”

“Of course!” gushed Daria. “I’m chicken too - on dates, I mean . . .”

Bullshit. She’s fearless.

“It’s a bit strange,” said the young man. “A blind double date. It’s a good idea, but . . .”

His name was Marc, a banker from France. Type infp: diplomatic, introverted, yet apparently open-minded. Manos sensed he was very attracted to Mei and felt a pang of jealousy. Who wouldn’t be crazy about her? He would have to get used to it. Mei read his thoughts with a breezy smile before focusing on her date. They had work to do. For the next half hour, Manos and Mei worked through their mental checklist item by item to examine the people caught for them by the neural network they’d cast. This tête-à-tête had parameters culled from a somewhat small set of their respective right-swipes. Hidden biases lurked. For all. For example, if, as he claimed, Manos preferred the Chinese type to the Mediterranean - say, the actress Sun Li versus a Lena Sideris - then what the hell was Daria doing here, with her cascading black curls, fresh as lemon groves on the Amalfi coast?

With well-preprocessed data, even half an algorithm nails you!

Half an hour of small talk revealed where they were from, where they worked, their favorite movies, where they would love to travel, Like, if you could just leave tomorrow . . . .

It also revealed to Manos they’d made a mistake. Sex was a mistake. Which made Daria a mistake.

They had pulled profiles without timestamp-based clustering. This allowed data from hastily created profiles, like those made by married travelers looking for a quick hookup, which they hadn’t had time to isolate from the training datasets. Classic case of overfitting[1]. The algorithms worked, but with so much noisy data, spontaneity was redefined as fear. Fear’s not attractive. Fear degenerated into aggression and haste. Since we’re here, let’s do it right on the seafood bar, by the open oysters . . .

Another possible issue was voiced by Marc, who was saying:

“I’m not convinced double blind dates work.”

But Mei knew the problem was Manos himself. Always botching things! Attempting to "eliminate system biases” he’d added a stupid line of code actually designed to test the weights of their own Asian-American romance: sorted_data = sorted(data, key=lambda x: x['Asian']). Sweet of him, really.

Daria and Marc, each suspicious of these two nutjobs giving each other flirtatious looks and running the conversation along some shared secret formula, suddenly got up to use the restrooms.

Mei opened her laptop, steam practically coming out of her ears.

“I saw it this morning! I can’t believe you!”

“I don’t think it’s the command,” he murmured.

“The data –”

“Mei, it’s psychology, it’ not smooth world[2]. Anyway,” he smiled, cooling the tension. “I think Marc likes you.”

“You know he’s not my type.”

“Oh, but trust your data.”

“Manos Manu, are you trying to get rid of me?”

“No,” he said. “You’re my ground truth.”

Ground truth. A tech term they’d appropriated, meaning she mattered more to Manos than anything. Mei flushed with a thrill as he pulled her close, kissing her. They were swept up in vertigo, their kisses wet in all the right places. The world disappeared, as if their neurons were drunk and brimming over.

Until Daria reappeared. With Marc.

Neither took their seats. Instead they stood staring.

“I guess blind dates work out after all,” Marc teased.

Daria gave a crooked smile, a few locks of her glossy hair spiraling out wildly. Something had apparently happened in the bathroom.

“Noise!” cried Manos, triumphant.

Mei’s smile was as funny as Daria’s as she tumbled back into Manos’ arms. In the confusion, Daria’s much-needed enfp leadership came to the rescue.

“Ok, this started off wrong, but let’s make it right,” she said. “Marc and I want to hit a beach club in Sentosa.”

They all looked at each other, and Daria added, “You guys are super-nerds, but . . . do you want to come?”

Review:

4 stars!

Unique and cerebral search for a killer.

The Machine Murders: Desert Balloons is the second book in author C.J. Abazis’s cerebral cat-and-mouse series featuring Interpol’s chief data scientist, Manos Manu, and his team of geniuses at the Global Center for Innovation. With pilots from the international hot balloon community descending on Dubai for the inaugural Carol Cloud Festival start to get picked off one by one, it is up to Manos and his team to unlock the puzzle of who or what is behind their murders.

Manos and his team members are a serious and accomplished group, but they still exhibit a warm camaraderie as they research and refine their MANU program to hunt down a killer mastermind. An early misunderstanding between Manos and Mei while working on another project has put their relationship to the test. Still, Manos cheats on his girlfriend when he’s stranded overnight in the desert with a married woman.

The plot unfolds with descriptions and meaty discussions of intricate computer processes and theories, integrated with psychological theories, principles of human thought and behavior, and predictive testing, including the popular Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as Manos and Mei dabble with a dating app side project. However, the focus on refining the MANU algorithm, although realistic, got repetitive. While I struggled to maintain enthusiasm for the process, I enjoyed the character interactions.

The story can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel; however, there is quite a lot of reference to their previous case in Mykonos. I think the books should be read in order of publication to better understand the current action and connect with the recurring characters. There are many characters to keep track of as the story progresses, some with unusual names or similar names to others or with more than one spelling or a nickname. This got a little confusing, and I finally had to keep a manual list to keep everyone straight. A page of footnotes, provided at the end of the book, was especially helpful, though, with some of the terminology and ideas presented early on.

I recommend THE MACHINE MURDERS: DESERT BALLOONS to mystery readers with a comfortable grasp of computer terminology, application development and testing, and A.I. theory.

READ AN EXCERPT:

“Why didn’t you answer my texts?” Still in pajamas, her hair disheveled, Mia was wild eyed. “I can’t find the kitten. How did he get out?”

Though posed as a question, her accusation woke me from my stupor. All sense of peace and wellbeing dispelled, I glanced at the clock. “We spoke less than thirty minutes ago…”

“I’m sorry.” Mia put her hand to her temple. “I’m just so worried about Ichiro.”

“Relax, we’ll find him.” I glanced about the efficiency apartment. A search can’t take more than a few minutes. “I’ll start in the kitchenette.”

And I’ll check my bedroom…for the fourth time.” Mia’s shoulders sagged.

Just as I was about to give up, I noticed a tissue box on the desk. Ichiro wouldn’t be in there…would he?

A tiny mew escaped. Then the kitten’s silky head popped up, and he began mewing loudly.

“You found him?” Mia ran in.

“Yup. The little stinker used the tissue box as a hideaway bed.” I lifted the kitten, cuddling him.

“Thank heavens!” Mia gave a deep sigh. “I didn’t know what to tell Atsuki.”

“Who cares what he thinks?” Her overreaction was getting on my nerves.

“I do.”

“Why?

“Because Atsuki takes an interest in this little guy. And what Atsuki likes, I like.”

“Since when?”

“I don’t know…recently. Actually, since last night…” Her brow wrinkling, Mia mumbled.

“What?”

“Something happened, but I can’t quite remember…Atsuki said something about cats…and foxes…I can’t recall.”

Cats and foxes again…My ears perked.

REVIEW:

5 stars!

A tale of second-chance romance made magical by drawing on Japanese mythology.

Fox Tale by Karen Hulene Bartell is an absorbing tale of second-chance romance with a love triangle to boot. It is made magical by the infusion of Japanese mythology and a whirlwind tour of some of Japan’s most exciting destinations. With a career-focused leading lady and two enticing yet flawed suitors escorting her to must-see locations, the story is rich with possibilities and choices.

The main character, Ava West, is on her first international assignment as the travel and food writer for the online magazine she’s worked for since graduating. She suffered heartbreak at the hands of Rafe Anderson, who unceremoniously dumped her after dating all through college rather than popping the question she was anticipating. Ava is still quite bitter about her failed relationship as the story opens, and the betrayal feels fresh. I enjoyed her fortuitous meeting with Ichiro “Chance” Sato and their ensuing chemistry that she fought almost every step of the way. However, Chance isn’t exactly what he seems, and his persistent behavior, mercurial mood swings, and enigmatic pronouncements unsettle Ava and me. I wondered what was really going on with this guy from almost the start and, consequently, couldn’t put the book down.

Ava had arranged to stay with a close college friend, Mia, when she got to Tokyo, and this sounded like a fun working vacation for her. However, I was appalled when Mia facilitated Rafe, who happens to be working in Tokyo now, reconnecting with Ava without warning or her consent. His desertion devastated Ava, so what “friend” could possibly do this after that? However, it soon becomes apparent that not everything is good in Mia’s life, and her thinking and behavior become frightening and erratic.

While I initially hoped for a relationship between Ava and Chance (a possible kitsune), his alarmingly stalkerish behavior waved one red flag after another. On the other hand, I couldn’t forgive and forget Rafe’s past treatment of our girl either. Once again, this dilemma and Ava’s upcoming choices wouldn’t let me put this book down until I knew the outcome.

Besides the riveting plot, the vivid descriptions of the sights and food were downright tantalizing. The inclusion of cultural and mythological facts and fiction was fascinating, and I was compelled more than a few times to look up a particular aspect or location out of curiosity.

I recommend FOX TALE to romance readers who enjoy paranormal elements in their stories, especially those interested in Japan and Japanese culture and mythology.

EXCERPT:

“I love that brain of yours, but don’t think so much right now Emmaline.” His next kiss was softer, sweeter. The warm rumble of his voice pulled me right out of my head. “Be here with me, beautiful. Just feel.”

Don’t think. Feel. The voice in my head echoed what he said.

In an effort to do just that, I barely lifted my head to kiss him again. My eyelids fell closed and I poured all of my focus into feeling Tryn. The softness of his lips contrasted with the roughness of his beard. The heat of him and the breadth of his body. My hands landed on his back and went searching. When I found the hem of his T-shirt, I dipped under it.

Oh, I did not expect his skin to be so soft. The muscles underneath were hard, but also moved with a fluid grace that I never wanted to stop feeling. I already knew he gave great hugs, but to feel him wrap around me skin-to-skin would be on another level.

As if reading my mind, Tryn made off with his shirt when our kisses broke apart for air. When he lowered to me again, his fingers drifted under my shirt slowly, giving me every opportunity to stop him.

I didn’t. I kissed him harder, molding my body to his. A strong hand lifted me a few inches from the bed, just enough to get my shirt and bra off.

“Fucking perfect,” Tryn murmured along my collarbone before kissing lower.

My gaze found the ceiling. Any other time, I’d be in my head again, wondering if I looked weird topless, if my chest was smaller than what he preferred. But what I was quickly figuring out? Tryn knew how to make a girl feel.

Read an Excerpt

It looked alive—like some slithering beast come up from the depths to crawl slowly towards the sea. Orange fingers flowed from the main body at all angles, taking on new forms and hues as they made their way down the slope. A fine filigree of black floated on the surface of the lava, where the viscous fluid quickly cooled in the ocean air. But just underneath you could see the fiery magma, its edges a searing yellow-white where the fingers stretched till they burst, spilling forth their contents of molten rock.

‘Wow.’ Valerie stood there unmoving, unable to take her eyes from the sight.

‘Well, I’m gonna head uphill a bit and get some shots back this way before that amazing backdrop disappears,’ Isaac said, peering down to check the settings on his Nikon camera in the dim light. Valerie turned around and saw what he meant. A crescent moon hung low in the now-purple sky, with a single planet burning brightly above. She could just make out the thin line of the ocean, edged in the foreground by jagged black rock.

Kristen pulled her phone from her pocket and tagged along after Isaac, but Valerie stayed put. She wanted to simply sit down and watch the show. It was mesmerizing, the way the lava beast spread its limbs in its nonstop march downhill, and how it continually morphed into crazy shapes: a heart slowly breaking in two; a woman’s face with long, streaming hair; a winged dragon. The flow came nearer and she felt the force of its heat—as if the doors to a massive oven had opened wide. Standing back up to step back, she wandered down-flow, watching a small finger dribble into a crevice and quickly fill it in. Tiny ferns had sprung up in a few of the cracks nearby—resilient little plants, doomed though they were.

Looking out toward the sea, Valerie saw that the sun was now above the horizon. The low-lying clouds had turned orange and gray, and the sky was a pale blue. She faced back uphill but could see no sign of Kristen or Isaac.

Nice. To be alone, with only the sound of the wind and the crackle of rock being blanketed by the newest land on the planet. She continued on, skirting the edge of the flow. Now that the sun was up, she could tell that there were two different types of the cooled lava rock: a twisty, ropey-looking kind and a more pillowy, smooth variety. And she could see that while the older flows were a dull gray, the brand-new rock was a shiny black, sparkling in the sunlight.

Her eye was caught by a color that didn’t belong—a flash of fluorescent green—at the very edge of the flow. Curious, she walked over and saw that it was a shoe. No, more like a workman’s boot, with bright-green laces. Now, how could someone leave their boots here? she wondered. You’d never be able to hike back over the lava field without your shoes on.

And then she got that queasy feeling you experience when there’s a disconnect between what you expect to see and what’s actually there. For the shoe had not been left behind, after all: it was still on a foot.

But that was all that was visible, because the rest of the body had been covered over by hot lava.

READ AN EXCERPT:
Grandma’s bedtime stories echoed through my mind as I sped west on I-10. At an early age, family history had merged with myth until the name Fort Lincoln was as legendary as Avalon or Middle Earth.

But when the snow-covered peaks loomed closer, their reality was undeniable. Maybe her stories weren’t tall tales…

And what about her proverbs? “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop.” I winced. No job and no prospects. Mustering out after a five-year Army stint, I had to ask myself: What next? Where next?

Cody slipped into my thoughts, but I dismissed him, refusing to romanticize our breakup.

A troop of cavalry soldiers galloped toward me from the nineteenth century, but a second glance proved the images were metal cutouts--two-dimensional illusions that resembled an officer and guide leading two columns of cavalrymen.

The silhouettes evoked tales of my great-great-grandfather, Ben Williams. Beginning his military career as a scout, he’d been field promoted during combat, then commissioned as
Second Lieutenant at Fort Lincoln.

I smiled, proud of our similar career paths. Maybe Grandma’s stories influenced me more than I realized.

Leaving the Interstate, I turned south. Road signs noted towns that sounded familiar from family stories but seemed as mythical as Camelot or Tintagel Castle.

Closer now, the mountains’ features came into view. No longer mere outlines on the horizon, each craggy palisade and butte towered over the highway.

Fluffy hoarfrost transformed the landscape into an icy spectacle, with flaky, crystal shards overlaying each leaf and every blade of grass. A frozen fairyland! Just the way Grandma described it. Inspired by the raw beauty, I straightened my shoulders. Maybe I’m viewing my discharge the wrong way. Instead of adrift, maybe I’m free…

REVIEW:

5 stars!

A great romance with a unique plot and paranormal elements.

Kissing Kin is the first book in author Karen Hulene Bartell's new Trans-Pecos series, and readers who like paranormal elements in their contemporary romances are certain to enjoy it. With two genuinely nice main characters and a backdrop of far West Texas, the story was a sweet, lovely, spooky, and fun reading experience.

The story unfolds from two viewpoints, Maeve's and Lucas's, and in multiple timelines as well. However, with the author's excellent storytelling, readers will have no trouble keeping everything and everyone straight. Another extra that I enjoyed was that the main FEMALE character is a military veteran. Maeve Jackson has just separated from the service after five years of deployments around the globe. She's undecided about her plans for her next stage of life, having planned to return home to her grandmother after separation. However, her grandmother passes away immediately, preceding Maeve's mustering out. It was made ever sadder for Maeve as she had not been able to see her grandmother for quite a while due to her deployment in Afghanistan. I liked her decision to detour to Fort Lincoln and visit the locations for so many of the stories her grandmother had told her about her family when she was a child, and of course, that led to her meeting Lucas.

Lucas Kaylor is a very nice and helpful guy, and he quickly realizes he'd like a more intimate relationship with Maeve should her thoughts turn in that direction. I liked how he treated her like she was the most fascinating and beautiful woman he had ever met. Both experience an immediate attraction to the other on top of discovering a familial connection; their chemistry is great. Bea Perkins hovering around the fringes, being catty, and causing trouble added the perfect touch of conflict to the story. At the same time, the occasional odd occurrences and small unexplained happenings at the beginning of the story were just the start of a mounting paranormal vibe. Eventually, the spookiness develops into a full-blown paranormal presence. Or does it?

One of my favorite things about the plot is that the couple explores and visits locations in the far western region of the state, including Big Bend National Park and other well-known natural landmarks. The descriptions of the late winter landscape and the sudden blizzard were vivid, creating clear visions of the remote and expansive beauty found there. The detailed descriptions of the meals the main characters share, including Lucas's wines, were tempting, and it was fun to see that the author included recipes at the end of the book for a couple of the more intriguing dishes mentioned.

I recommend KISSING KIN to readers who enjoy contemporary romances with a paranormal twist, stories featuring female military veterans, and West Texas settings.

THE LOST ONES

Book 3 in the Detective Nikki Cassidy series

As dawn breaks over a small gas station on the outskirts of Groveton, Ohio, the body of a teenage girl lies totally still. Long blonde hair covers her face, and a length of frayed rope hangs loosely around her neck. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds her, just like her killer intended…

When FBI agent Nikki Cassidy receives a call from Groveton’s Chief of Police, her heart pounds. A young girl just knocked on the door of Nikki’s old family home, claiming to be Nikki’s kid sister, Caitlin. But Caitlin was murdered fifteen years ago. Who is the girl and what does she want?

Nikki thinks the impersonator could finally lead her to her sister’s twisted killer. But her hope is shattered when the girl’s lifeless body is found strangled at a local service stop. If the girl knew about Caitlin, could she have known the identity of the killer? Was she murdered before she could unmask them?

Going against her boss’s orders to stay away, Nikki traces the girl’s last known steps to her best friend, Shirley. Nikki learns that the girl was last seen meeting with a stranger at the mall. Could it have been her killer?

Closer than ever to uncovering the truth, Nikki can’t give up now. But when Shirley’s body is found at another service station, a length of rope wound around her neck, her heart shatters. Another young life has been lost. Nikki vows that this will be the last.

When an intruder breaks into her old home, Nikki knows it’s the killer sending her a sign. As she walks into the familiar old house in the dead of night, will she finally get justice and catch her sister’s killer, or did she just walk into a deadly trap?

Review of THE NOWHERE GIRLS (Book One):

4 stars!

Riveting thriller where the past comes hunting for the present.

The Nowhere Girls is the first book in author Dana Perry’s exciting series featuring FBI Agent Nikki Cassidy, and it is a riveting beginning. With its guilt-ridden main character and an intriguing plot where the past impinges on the present, readers will find it difficult to set this book aside.

Twelve-year-old Caitlin Cassidy’s murder destroyed her family. Her police chief father suffered a fatal heart attack during the investigation, and her mother blamed her older sister, Nikki, for her death. Nikki shouldered the guilt her entire life, and it guided her to her career in the FBI. She couldn’t save her sister but would do her best to rescue other children in similar circumstances. With her past and commitment to this goal, she is ultra-focused on her work, even to the detriment of her personal life. Nikki has recently acquired a fiancé, one equally devoted to advancing in his own career with a prestigious law firm in Washington, DC. On the face of things, they appear perfect for each other, but the reality is the complete opposite. Nikki is a skilled and pugnacious investigator but has developed a reputation as a bit of a loose cannon and doesn’t recognize the impact the conflict of interest poses for the broader case because of her long-held guilt over her part in her sister’s death and her desperate need to find out the truth of what happened and why.

The plot grabbed me from the first when her sister’s convicted killer requests a meeting with Nikki to finally answer her questions about Cassidy’s murder, and from there, the story unfolds with one twist after another. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, something new would prove me wrong or change my mind. I was compelled to keep reading to find out how the author would resolve this very intriguing tale.

I recommend THE NOWHERE GIRLS to readers of mysteries and thrillers, especially those who enjoy a professional female investigator.
