Book Review: Lethal Standoff by DiAnn Mills

Lethal StandoffLethal Standoff by DiAnn Mills
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Starts at high speed and never slows down!

Lethal Standoff is a new Christian romantic suspense novel by the talented, veteran author DiAnn Mills and features dedicated and compassionate female hostage negotiator, Carrington Reed. The story is action-packed and infused with romantic tension from the start, and the entire story is set within the framework of faith.

Carrington Reed is caring, compassionate, and sincere in her desire to help all parties involved in a hostage situation. She genuinely tries to look past the perpetrators’ actions to get to the root causes of what they’ve done to gain as successful a resolution as she possibly can for all. She is in high demand as an independent hostage negotiator, and the wear and tear of the work is taking a toll. Carrington harbors a health concern that could put an end to her successful career.

Levi Ehrlich is a Houston journalist who reports on the very situations Carrington tries to defuse, so their paths have crossed often in the past. They’ve developed something of a friendship due in large part to his trustworthy, fair, and balanced reporting. Until now, their relationship has remained strictly professional, but both secretly feel an undeniable romantic attraction to the other.

Levi’s personal life has undergone some extreme changes since his recent conversion to Messianic Judaism. Born into a conservative Jewish family, he’s been rejected by his father, mother, and sister. Still, he holds out hope that someday they will relent and accept him again, no matter the differences in their beliefs.

The plot is fast-paced as Carrington is called from one crisis to another, and Levi is close behind in search of a good story. When Levi’s boss demands exaggerated, sensationalized copy to boost circulation, Levi refuses to compromise his integrity, even under threat of dismissal. However, when the hostage negotiation takes some drastic turn, Carrington and Levi are certain there’s more to the hostage-taker’s motive than he claims. As they follow their instincts, the story answers with some surprising twists and turns.

The author’s storytelling is immersive and compelling; the pages practically turned themselves on the way to the final resolution. With both characters experiencing spiritual struggles, there are some frank and open discussions and questioning of faith and its impact on their lives and the impact of their life experiences on the state of their faith. This is a story of forgiveness and renewal.

I recommend LETHAL STANDOFF to readers of Christian romantic suspense.

Book Review: Dream by the Shadows (Shadow Weavers Duology, #1) by Logan Karlie

Dream by the Shadows (The Shadow Weavers Duology, #1)Dream by the Shadows by Logan Karlie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Atmospheric slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers young adult fantasy.

Dream by the Shadows is the first book of the Shadow Weavers Duology by author Logan Karlie, and it is an atmospheric young adult enemies-to-lovers tale within a frightening world of nightmares and dreams, shadows and light. Young Esmer’s world falls apart when her parents succumb to “The Corruption,” a horrific disease that turns normal people into slavering, demonic killers, plaguing her village. With her only desire being the protection of her younger brother, she soon becomes a pawn in an eternity-long struggle between her world’s leader, Lord Mithras, the Light Bringer, and his evil antithesis known as the Shadow Bringer.

Esmer Havenfall is the heartbreakingly engaging young heroine trapped by the circumstances of her parents’ actions and their subsequent deaths. She already carries a load of guilt, feeling responsible for her older sister’s death, and she is the only support for her sweet, much-loved younger brother, Elliot. I was exhausted for this young woman, as each time she tried to sleep, she found herself in the nightmarish Dream Realm, where she encountered the notorious and reviled Shadow Bringer.

The plot moves quickly as the author builds a complex setting and an intricate system of magic. There’s a lot of ground to cover, and I had some difficulty keeping up at times. I enjoyed the push-pull of Esmer’s emotions toward the Shadow Bringer as she was both repulsed by his reputation and sympathetically drawn to the man suffering behind the mask. The descriptions of the diverse and vivid settings were at times lush, stark, and always atmospheric.

As I mentioned, I did have some trouble comprehending the full nature of the world of Noctis, the lore, and the magic system; it was just that vast. It took the entirety of the book for me to gain a modicum of comfort with it all, as much is revealed during scenes in the Dream Realm that early on played out with all the well-known confusion one experiences in a nightmare. The excitement of the story really takes off toward the end of this book, leaving me anxious for the next, so I can see how this will all resolve.

I recommend DREAM BY THE SHADOWS to readers of young adult fantasy.

Children's Book Review: Skyriders (Skyriders, #1) by Polly Holyoke

Skyriders (Skyriders, #1)Skyriders by Polly Holyoke
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An epic middle-grade fantasy adventure that will capture the hearts and imaginations of boys and girls alike.

Skyriders is the first book in a new middle-grade fantasy series of the same name by author Polly Holyoke. In 13-year-old Kiesandra’s world, humans coexist and depend on their bond with the beautiful and powerful winged horses known as skysteeds to keep them safe. When terrible monsters that haven’t been seen in years return to threaten their people, it is up to Kie and her beloved skysteed, N’Rah, to alert the palace and convince their leaders that they know how these creatures of legend can be defeated.

The story pulls out all the stops for adventure, world-building, and overcoming impossible, overwhelming odds. This epic fantasy adventure will appeal to both boys and girls, reluctant readers, and would be perfect for reading aloud and tempting eager young imaginations.

The book’s action begins immediately with minimal exposition; there’s no waiting around! Kie is the kind of young heroine who everyone can get behind. At 13 years of age, she is humble, loving, brave, and loyal. I loved that she (and the others) could communicate telepathically with their skysteeds, and early on, readers know that her ability is not limited to N’Rah. Their foe, the chimerae, are horrific three-headed monsters and are a returning menace from her country’s past, one foretold by her beloved Uncle Dug. He was right all along! The aerial battles against the chimerae are exciting and easy to follow.

The plot is an extraordinary underdog story, as Kie faces frustration after frustration trying to get those in a position to act to believe her. Her warnings repeatedly fall on deaf ears. However, it’s always a satisfying moment for young readers when young characters prove to be right and the adults wrong.

The author’s world-building is so impressive in this first volume of the series. The descriptions of the various settings are so vivid you can practically feel the mountain storms or the grit and heat of the desert. But best of all are the Pegusus-like skysteeds, sentient and wise and a welcome addition to a genre filled with dragons. You can almost feel the experience of flying on the back of one of these winged horses (but don’t call them horses!) Kudos for the fabulous cover that features Kie, N’Rah, and the monstrous chimerae and establishes a perfect visual right from the start.

With its highly relatable heroine, great underdog story, and fantastic creatures of myth and legend, I recommend SKYRIDERS to readers of middle-grade fantasy and adventure.

Book Review: The Devil's in the Dancers by Catherine Yu

The Devil's in the DancersThe Devil's in the Dancers by Catherine Yu
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Suspenseful and atmospheric young adult horror story!

The Devil's in the Dancers by Catherine Yu is an engrossing and eerily atmospheric young adult horror story set at an exclusive and elite summer ballet intensive for the children of the wealthy and privileged. Told from the viewpoint of a hopeful young scholarship student who is there to augment her high school resume for her application for admission to Harvard, this haunting, upended fish-out-of-water story had me glued to its pages.

Marianne "Mars" Chang is thrilled to be accepted into the prestigious Allegra Academy summer ballet intensive on a full scholarship. She is shocked when the founder, Allegra Bechler, takes a personal interest in her attendance, holding out the possibility of a place at the school for the regular term, if she'll do her one small favor. Alex, Mars's roommate, is Allegra's great-niece and is acknowledged as the best dancer in the program, despite the girl having expressed her flagging interest in dancing. Allegra wants Mars to secretly replace Alex's daily nutritional supplements with a new and improved formulation not yet on the market. Mars agrees despite her ethical reservations, but finding the right moment to make the switch proves to be a logistical problem. As she begins to question the fairness of giving the most privileged dancer yet another advantage over the others, she impulsively shares one of the pills with a struggling but devoted scholarship student. Hannah shows immediate and amazing improvement in her performance, but soon begins to exhibit some alarming side effects. When Allegra turns a deaf ear to Mars's concerns and Alex's friends close ranks against her, she desperately tries to warn Alex of her aunt's plans and get her away from the ominously over-secured campus.

Mars is a likable main character with reasonable hopes and aspirations, despite agreeing to the founder's suspicious plans to switch out her great-niece's supplements. Why didn't she just approach Alex straight on? Mars is an underdog from the wrong background, with a reach-for-the-stars dream. Alex is the cool girl, and Mars develops a crush as she gets to know her, genuinely lacking the thought of how Alex's status could enhance her own. However, her attraction to her roommate takes a backseat to the mystery behind the need for the supplements and what is really going on at the school. Alex's friend from home, Naomi, Sophie, and Sasha, are creepy and menacing 'mean girls' and their presence really keeps the action suspenseful.

The Allegra Academy setting is gothically atmospheric, with empty, echoing hallways and unusually proportioned spaces. In a secluded, remote location, the sprawling campus is fenced and gated, with a plethora of cameras keeping watch, but perhaps not for possible intruders, but for the program attendees. Strictly-enforced curfews add another layer of control and a hint of menace.

The plot moves quickly, and the author's storytelling is absorbing; I read this book cover to cover in one day. The ballet classes and dancers' experiences will be familiar territory to students of dance. The aches, the pains, the interminable rehearsals, and the chaos of the dressing room before performances are realistic and may be eye-opening to those unfamiliar with ballet life. I loved how the story gradually transformed from a fish-out-of-water tale into a horror story with unexpected elements of the supernatural. The climax was an absolutely terrifying surprise and answered the questions I'd been harboring from the very beginning. I was delighted that I was not left hanging in the aftermath but presented with an ending of hope for normality for the girls.

I recommend THE DEVIL'S IN THE DANCERS to readers of young adult horror, especially those who enjoy stories set in boarding schools, remote settings, ballet, and a hint of sapphic romance.

Read an excerpt:

Chapter 1

The East Texas sun was hotter than usual for September, the few clouds high above providing no relief. A half-hour earlier, overcome by heat and exhaustion, Crystal had let her sign reading “Save Kwami” slip to the ground. Standing near the front of the crowd, Crystal pushed up the visor on her baseball cap to get a better look at her surroundings. She was pleased with the impressive turnout which she estimated to be close to one thousand people. It was the largest they’d ever had. Most of the other protestors continue to hold their placards high, displaying myriad slogans such as “Justice for Kwami,” “Let Kwami Live,” “Impeach Gov. Percy,” and the most popular, “STOP.” She took a deep breath and lifted her sign again, fighting the pain in her fingers as she held it as high as she could.

The crowd of protestors was comprised of a cross-section of the community— young, old, couples, families, Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian. A colorful array of baseball caps, bucket hats, visors, straw hats, and cowboy hats protected most of the heads from the constant flood of the sun’s rays.

The makeshift podium and public address system were rudimentary, and there was the usual milling around often seen in large gatherings, but the audience, for the most part, was paying attention to the pudgy young man with a man bun speaking to them. At times, the crowd burst out in synchronous claps and hoots of approval. The assembly was peaceful, with only a few skirmishes breaking out at the edges where police stood watch.

Still thirsty after having finished her bottle of water, Crystal let her mind wander as the speaker droned on about the immorality of what was about to take place. Her clothes clung to her sweaty body, and despite wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, the bright sun hurt her eyes. Looking down, she swatted away a bug that landed on her arm. Uncomfortable and impatient, she was eagerly awaiting the next speaker.

Finally, the man at the podium looked up and announced, “And now, the man you’ve all been waiting to hear, the leader of our organization, Mr. Derek Rigler.”

The mood of the crowd changed, and participants started chanting “STOP” in unison as they raised and lowered their signs. A tall, muscular man with tan skin and wavy blond hair, took to the stage next to the previous speaker and scanned the crowd with his magnetic blue eyes. Crystal looked up and smiled. His handsome, chiseled features gave him the look of a confident leader. Although he was nearly fifty years old, he looked at least ten years younger. He hasn’t lost the ability to attract attention whenever he enters a room.

Derek took his place on the podium and held out his arms as if to give a benediction. After almost a full minute of roaring applause, he raised and lowered his hands several times to quiet the crowd.

Crystal looked around, energized by the enthusiasm bubbling over. She noted more press vans set up around the perimeter than in the previous protest. Their organization, STOP, was gaining traction.

She wondered if Derek had picked her out of the crowd. If she were taller, he’d probably see her—she wasn’t far from the front—but she imagined her five-foot two-inch frame made her visage difficult to identify in the sea of people. From what she could glean, Derek hadn’t spotted her. After all, she was just another brunette under a baseball cap, surrounded by many others. Even so, Crystal smiled widely, wondering if anyone nearby recognized her. After all, she was notable as Derek’s wife and the mother of his child, Cordelia.

As Derek started his familiar diatribe against the Texas death penalty laws, Crystal tried to lock eyes with him, but his eyes never found her. Instead, he focused on members of the audience near and far, concentrating his gaze on one person for several seconds before moving on to the next pair of waiting eyes.

Crystal recognized the usual arguments against the event that was scheduled to take place momentarily—the uneven death penalty sentencing, the ugliness of exacting revenge, and the irreversibility of the punishment once meted out. The speech was powerful, and she agreed with everything Derek said. She could recite the words by heart, not only because she had heard them during Derek’s practice sessions, but because she had written them herself. Every time the crowd reacted with hollers and claps, she felt taller, each breath a bit more satisfying. She’d been to over six of these rallies in the past year, each protesting the execution of a prisoner found guilty of a crime deemed fitting for capital punishment.

The death penalty had never sat well with Crystal, but over the past two years, the practice had escalated, with four more executions scheduled over the next six months in Texas alone. Not only was the ultimate punishment meted out more often, but the evidence leading to convictions was frequently less convincing. She’d made up her mind to do something to stop the injustice and had established STOP almost a year earlier. A small, grass-roots collection of like-minded people, it was taking hold, thanks to her speech writing, community outreach, and organizational skills, bolstered by her husband’s charisma. He was the face of the organization.

Derek’s address was interrupted by a loud commotion as the officers stationed around the perimeter began to forcefully clear a path through the protestors to the entryway of the large building looming behind the speaker. Despite shouting and resistance from the crowd, with the most passionate demonstrators being handcuffed and dragged away, the police were able to open a wide berth.

“We are nearing the time,” Derek shouted above the commotion, “the time when our brother Kwami will be taken from us in an act that can only be described as state-sponsored murder. Let all those who have participated in this mockery of justice one day pay for their crimes, and let all those who directly benefit from this violent act realize the wrong they have participated in.”

A police transport moved through the clearing in the crowd as demonstrators chanted “Kwami, Kwami” in unison. Although the windows of the vehicle were covered, all knew who was inside—Kwami McKinney, sentenced to be executed that day. The van didn’t stop until it was a mere five feet from the door to the building. A massive construction of cement and glass six stories high, the structure dwarfed the trees and other buildings nearby. Derek was silent as he turned to watch the Black prisoner, his head shaved, exit the van's side door.

Dressed in an orange jumpsuit accessorized with ankle and wrist shackles, Kwami was escorted by two armed guards, each holding onto one of his arms. Two more prison officers took up the rear. As the party of five walked towards the glass doors of the building, a Black woman around fifty years old ran towards them screaming. She was forcibly stopped by police, who grabbed onto her arms long before she could interfere.

Everyone there knew the woman was Sally McKinney, Kwami’s mother. She yelled and cried hysterically, flailing against those restraining her as her son was led through the automated doors that opened before him and the guards. They disappeared inside the structure as the glass doors shut.

People in the crowd yelled and cried, drowning out Ms. McKinney's wails. Frustrated tears filled Crystal’s eyes; their protest had done nothing to dissuade the authorities from carrying out their sentence. She hadn’t expected the proceedings to be halted, but held onto a glimmer of hope until now, irrational as it was.

She looked to Derek for comfort, hoping they might finally lock gazes and convey their sadness to each other, but Crystal’s thoughts were interrupted by a female acquaintance. “Fantastic speech,” the woman said.

“I can’t disagree,” Crystal answered, buoyed momentarily by the woman’s words.

“You must be very proud, being his wife. He’s so handsome, and brilliant to boot. You two are the perfect couple. I’d sure like to be a fly on the wall at your dinner table to hear about all his great ideas.”

The words stung slightly, as Crystal chuckled politely. She was accustomed to being thought of as a mere appendage of her charismatic husband, but, she’d tried to convince herself that a successful protest, with Derek delivering a resounding speech, was all that was important. She didn’t need the admiration of others like he did. “Our dinners aren’t as interesting as you might think. Mostly, we talk about how we’re going to pay our bills.”

Members of the press, who until now had been scattered amongst the protestors while taking notes and silently recording videos, were now talking and interviewing people on camera. The crowd thinned, but Crystal didn’t want to leave. She’d have liked to remain until she knew Kwami had taken his last breath, but that moment was hours away.

She listened as a nearby male telecaster spoke into a camera. “Emotions are again high as another execution is about to take place. While many people feel that the crimes Kwami McKinney was convicted of, armed robbery and hostage-taking, justify the death sentence, some feel the punishment is too severe for the crimes the prisoner was convicted of. Still others believe he is innocent of the charges against him.”

The reporter turned to a middle-aged female bystander and asked, “What do you think of today’s events? Do you think justice is being carried out today?” After posing the question, he shoved the microphone close to the woman’s mouth.

“This is a travesty of justice,” she answered. “The real criminal was wearing a ski mask during the robbery, and escaped capture immediately following the crime. That was made clear during the trial. We also learned that Mr. McKinney was picked out in a lineup by two unreliable witnesses days later. There was a boatload of evidence that the so-called witnesses had drug charges against them dropped shortly after identifying Mr. McKinney. What kind of justice is that?”

The telecaster quickly turned to the camera and continued his reporting. “Despite the controversy, Kwami McKinney is still scheduled to be executed here and now at New Lake Hospital. While we are happy for the families of the six unnamed individuals who will be the recipients of much-needed organs, many are questioning the legality and morality of what is now becoming a common method of organ procurement. The objections are being led by the organization STOP, which stands for Stop Transplants of Organs from Prisoners.”

Book Review: Skylark (The SEAL Saga, #1) by Megan Michelle

Skylark (The SEAL Saga Book 1)Skylark by Megan Michelle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Gripping military action and slow-burn romance!

Skylark is the first book in author Megan Michelle’s new military action romance series, The SEAL Saga, and it is a gripping and addictive beginning. With its engaging main protagonists, well-defined secondary characters, intriguing storyline, and atmospheric settings, the book provided a cinematic reading experience that was nearly impossible to set aside.

Commander Rachel Ryker is the first female SEAL, and her team’s current assignment sends them back to Afghanistan in search of a dangerous and well-known but elusive terrorist, who has stolen secret malware that could destroy the power grid of any country it is deployed in, including the United States. As she and her close-knit group settle into their Khost safe house, her immediate role in their mission is to befriend the women at the local mosque, in hopes of gaining insight into the whereabouts of their target.

Rachel is a strong woman, a strong leader, with strong opinions and an unwavering belief in herself and her ability to make a difference in the world. Her independent nature has created a complicated relationship with her family, particularly with her father, a high-ranking naval officer, to whom she has lied about her true position as a SEAL, believing he would interfere with her assignments. She has instead developed her own “family” of sorts, consisting of the men under her command. The team’s second-in-command, Lieutenant Commander Christopher Williams, is her best friend. Still, there is a palpable attraction between the two that they refuse to acknowledge, preferring to maintain their working relationship and career momentum, at least for now. The camaraderie among team members is great, and the author excels at clever yet natural-sounding repartee.

While the book is fairly lengthy for its type, coming in at over 450 pages, it is necessary as there is a lot of ground to cover, missions to set up, and relationships to establish. The author achieves this by weaving it all together in diverse ways as the story progresses, without relying on simple info-dumping. The descriptions of the settings are vibrant and lively, making even a shopping excursion come to life. Every step through Afghan society and every drive through town is laden with suspense as the characters never know where danger may be lurking. Action sequences are electric, well-choreographed, and easy to follow, at times with tragic consequences that kept me truly and emotionally invested. These characters quickly became more than words on a page, evolving into the people I felt I really knew.

I recommend SKYLARK to readers of military action stories, especially those who enjoy a touch of slow-burn romance.

When her son's new pet becomes evidence in a murder case, scrapbook store owner Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler discovers that some family secrets are worth killing for.

All eight-year-old Erik wanted for his birthday was a bird. What he got was Solo-a traumatized lovebird whose mate was recently devoured by a boa constrictor at a local pet shop.

But when Kiki learns that Solo originally belonged to Ruthie Goldman, a beloved member of their temple community who died after a brutal home invasion, she realizes this is no ordinary rescue pet.

Solo may be small, but he's carrying big secrets-literally. X-rays reveal the tiny bird has swallowed several diamonds from the robbery that killed his previous owner. Now someone is desperately trying to track down Erik's feathered friend, and Kiki's family is in danger.

As Detective Chad Detweiler investigates the diamond theft that triggered Ruthie's fatal stroke, Kiki uncovers a web of family betrayals, frozen embryos, and twisted ideas about genetic purity.

With her trademark blend of humor, heart, and small-town Missouri charm, Kiki must protect her family while helping to solve a murder that hits frighteningly close to home. Because when inheritance, infertility, and identity collide, even the most loving families can harbor deadly secrets.

"Fans of cozy mysteries will delight in this charming blend of family drama, small-town secrets, and feathered friends. Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler proves once again that the most dangerous mysteries often begin with the most innocent questions."

Book Review: A Ghostwriter's Guide to Murder by Melinda Mullet

A Ghostwriter's Guide to Murder: A NovelA Ghostwriter's Guide to Murder: A Novel by Melinda Mullet
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

With its unique setting and ensemble effort to solve a murder, this mystery is a winning series debut!

The Ghostwriter’s Guide to Murder by veteran author Melinda Mullet is a wonderful traditional mystery, and with its unique setting and characters’ ensemble effort to solve a murder, absolving one of their own of the crime, makes for a winning series debut. Ghostwriter Maeve Gardner is deep into writing book forty-three in the old-school Simon Hill detective series, originally penned by author Harlan Oaks, who, though caught in the throes of early-onset dementia, was still a big moneymaker for his publishing house. While Maeve longs for the day when she’ll be free to write her own novel, her current circumstances require her to defer to Simon Hill’s adventures for now.

After the breakup of a long-term relationship, Maeve moved onto a houseboat and became part of the unique floating community of Regent’s Canal. When Maeve and her dog, Captain Jack, discover a large cache of money hidden at their mooring, she heads off to the nearest station to inform the local police of her find. But when she and the police return to the boat, the money is gone and the body of her ex is floating off the Revenge’s stern. Maeve suddenly finds herself suspect number one in his death.

The story unfolds from multiple points of view, including Maeve’s and a couple of her nearest waterside neighbors, who have her back every step of the way. I loved their teamwork as they tried to clear Maeve’s name by finding the real killer. While Maeve has some idea of how her fictional detective would conduct an investigation, the others must all venture out of their comfort zones, be it physically or mentally, to help their friend, and some commit to extreme measures to do so. The author does a fabulous job building these characters’ deep, heartfelt friendships, and the results fairly radiate off the page, making this a group of friends you’d want to know in real life.

As the police are set on Maeve as their perpetrator, it is up to her and her friends to discover the truth. I enjoyed how they divvied up their investigatory tasks and met up later to compare notes. Their inquiries into the dead man’s life lead them in a number of directions and introduce some additional characters whom I feel may reappear in future cases. Mac “The Machine” Toliver, in particular, still has a lot of story left to tell. Gradually, a picture of what really happened begins to form, and the story’s climax is absolutely gripping.

I recommend A GHOSTWRITER’S GUIDE TO MURDER to readers of traditional mysteries and fans of Anthony Horowitz and Richard Osman.

SYNOPSIS:

Haunted by regret and stalled by guilt, Alex Chambers arrives at Silver Springs Health and Rehabilitation Centre searching for redemption. What he finds instead is Mae Seasons—a sharp-tongued, fiercely independent resident with no interest in being anyone’s project.

Alex came hoping to make amends for the mistakes of his youth, especially to the woman he once hurt. But when that hope slips away, he’s drawn into an unexpected role: caregiver and reluctant confidant to Mae, whose irreverence hides a lifetime of buried truths.

As days at Silver Springs unfold in their strange, often absurd rhythm, Alex is forced to confront the tangled grief of his past. Through awkward silences, reluctant confessions, and moments of startling vulnerability, he and Mae forge an unlikely friendship—one stitched together by shared loneliness, reluctant compassion, and the possibility of healing.

At once poignant and quietly humorous, Between Two Seasons is a story about the lives we try to outrun, the people who challenge us to face ourselves, and the surprising ways connection takes root.

READ AN EXCERPT:

Walking back to my room after Mae had been escorted to her doctor’s appointment, Susanne lobbied my attention from near the elevator, requesting a word that, although promised, I knew wouldn’t be quick.

Great, I thought. What fresh hell does she have in store for me now? Was she coming, with her corporate language, to add salt to my very fresh shin wound?

Susanne was dressed in her self-styled uniform. Nearly everything was exactly the same as the day before, but instead of a navy-blue ensemble, it was charcoal grey. Even her hair looked the exact same. If her tone indicated she was operated by levers, her attire confirmed it.

“Mr. Chambers, how are you this fine afternoon?” she asked cheerily. Fake, but cheerily.

“I’m good, Susanne.” Thanks for asking. I guess.

“I heard you had a little mishap with Ms. Seasons this morning. I do hope you will try not to rile her up like that in the future.”

Stunned at where she could have possibly received such misguided information as to the morning’s events, my mouth opened to respond, but no words formed.

“Very well then. I just wanted to check in on you and remind you that our older guests here at Silver Spring can be very sensitive. Many of them have lived a life you and I could never dream of enduring. We need to be mindful of that at all times. I do hope you will remember and conduct yourself accordingly.”

I felt my jaw inching closer to the floor.

“Yes, very good. If you need anything, please let Mr. Abner at the front know. He can assist you with whatever you require. Though, in the future, do try to be a little kinder to him as well. We want to make sure we treat everyone here at Silver Springs, whether staff or resident, with the utmost respect, care, and love.”

Jaw met floor.

GUEST POST:

Please welcome Marc MacDonald, the author of today's featured book, to the blog to talk about his experiences with minor characters.

QUESTION:

Did you have a minor character who insisted on playing a larger role in the story. If so, please tell us about it. And if not, please tell us how you get the characters in your head to behave.

MARC'S RESPONSE:

Phil’s character kept trying to elbow his way into a bigger role in the story, but in the end, he landed exactly where he needed to be. His word count was just right to make him the kind of lovable jerk that readers expect him to be. To the second part of your question, I did have to rein Phil in a bit. It’s not always easy to keep characters in their lanes—sometimes they surprise you with personalities larger than what you originally envisioned.

The one character I refused to restrain, though, was Mae. She had full permission to misbehave however she pleased. Trying to box her in or contain her energy would have stripped away the very essence of who she is—and, by extension, the heart of her story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Marc MacDonald is an author who believes every great story starts with a spark—whether it’s a single sentence, an unforgettable character, or an idea that won’t let go. As the writer behind Between Two Seasons, a novel that celebrates the beauty of human connection, Marc weaves heartfelt narratives that linger long after the last page is turned.

When he’s not crafting compelling fiction, Marc applies his storytelling skills as a seasoned communications professional, proving that every message—whether in a book or a press release—deserves to be engaging. He’s also a fierce defender of the Oxford comma, an unapologetic pun enthusiast, and someone who firmly believes that coffee is the most essential writing tool.
