Survival (Fallout, #1) by Lisa Harris

Survival (Fallout #1)Survival by Lisa Harris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The exciting and believable debut of Lisa Harris’s Christian dystopian series, FALLOUT.

No one really knows what happened. The residents of Shadow Ridge called it “The Quake.” But whatever it was, it took down the power grid, people died, and it doesn’t seem like power or life as we know it will be restored any time soon. In far west Texas, the town is isolated and inaccessible during the best of times, but now, cut off entirely from the rest of the state, lawlessness has claimed the surrounding miles of country. The people of Shadow Ridge must depend on their own to survive.

Survival is the first book in Lisa Harris’s Christian dystopian series, Fallout, and it’s been most appropriately described as “Longmire meets Jericho.” As an enthusiast of the dystopian/post-apocalyptic sub-genre, I can confidently say this book will go down as one of my favorites, and now I can’t wait to dive into the subsequent novels!

Jace McQuaid is an earnest and engaging protagonist, though I was initially surprised he took the lead, not his father. (I think the comparison to Longmire set up that expectation.) But it is through Jace’s point of view that the story unfolds, and we also get an additional subplot regarding his father to follow.

The plot felt more realistic than many other books I’ve read in this subgenre. There are a lot of unknowns as people struggle to survive, which I think would be the case. With their lines of communication gone, I don’t think anyone would really know (by this point in the story) what had caused technology’s collapse. As a radio operator, I would like to believe that some communication system would have regenerated pretty quickly, though. There are still quite a few Elmers and MacGyvers out there working with minimal tech. However, not having that up and running created limitations that made for a great story.

I liked that Jace and others always considered the impact “The Quake” had upon their neighbors, whether when trying to lend support or figure out what the bad guy would do next, given the circumstances. As adversity brings out the best and the worst in people, I hope most would tend to the good. I really enjoyed the mentions of how the town’s older residents had been sought out for their knowledge and memories of how things were done before technological conveniences became the norm.

Besides the dystopian storyline, there is romance. Starting as a warm and tentative attraction, Jace and Morgan have internal conflicts over letting their relationship grow into something more. Despite some differences, they are good together, and I was all for them becoming a couple. Little Noah was a sweet handful, and he made me smile.

With an exciting and realistic plot, engaging characters, and a desolate, dystopian west Texas setting, I recommend SURVIVAL to readers who enjoy dystopian stories with a romantic subplot and, so far, no viruses or zombies.

“Come not within the measure of my wrath.”
~William Shakespeare

CHAPTER ONE

Sweat gathered under the brim of Kent Davis’s Stetson as he walked the sandy beach along the Bogue Falaya River. He didn’t feel the brisk January breeze or pay attention to the mutterings of the forensic team. The unease burning in his gut shut out all distractions. He rested his hand on his belt, brushing against his Louisiana sheriff’s badge. The rub of metal reminded him of the oath he’d sworn to protect and serve, but on days like this, he hated his job.

Dispatch had initially deemed the early morning call from a frantic jogger a hoax. After an officer confirmed there was a body, Kent arrived at the scene to confront his worst nightmare—another murder. He already had three unsolved deaths weighing heavily on his department. Two high school students and a woman from out of town had died there in a matter of months. City leaders had been breathing down his neck for answers.

Kent studied the black body bag the technicians carried. This was only going to make his job harder.

His crew combed the beach, where receding floodwaters had exposed a young woman’s grave. From the looks of her bleached bones, partially covered in the remnants of a red dress, she’d been there for quite some time. He doubted they’d find anything admissible. There would be trace evidence, but no footprints, no debris, no blood, and no signs of struggle.

He climbed the steep hill from the beach to the parking area, scanning for any clues. Everywhere was a potential crime scene. After years of being in law enforcement, he doubted he could see the world in any other way.

“I don’t like this one bit, Bill,” Kent said, approaching the heavyset coroner waiting by the open doors of his van.

“What’s there to like. We got a dead girl who’s been buried here a long time.” Dr. Bill Broussard removed a pair of black-framed glasses from his egg-shaped head. “You might find a lead in old missing persons reports.”

“I’ll access the St. Tammany Parish database when I get to the station. Until then, she’s a Jane Doe.” Kent eyed the coroner’s van. “How long will it take to know something?”

Bill cleaned his glasses and moved out of the way while a technician slammed the doors closed. He waited until the man climbed into the driver’s side before responding. “You realize workin’ with old bones makes it harder to identify the cause of death. Let me get her to the lab, then we’ll see.”

“I got enough going on with Beau Devereaux, Dawn Moore, and Andrea Harrison.” Kent tipped back his hat. “This makes four bodies and no leads.”

“As soon as people catch wind of this, the gossip mill will run wild.” Bill motioned to the van. “We already got enough rumors flying around about serial killers and rapists on the loose.”

“But at least we know this isn’t a serial killer.”

“Do we?” Bill flipped through a few pictures on his phone and showed Kent the screen.

Kent looked at the bloody mess that had comprised the remains of Beau Devereaux. The golden boy of St. Benedict had been a football star and heir to the Devereaux fortune. The day Kent found his mutilated body along the river had been one of the worst of his career. Beau’s death, on the heels of the rape and grisly murder of Dawn Moore, had shattered his faith in their small town.

He squinted at the picture. “What am I missing?”

Bill pointed at Beau’s bruised and bloody neck. “Trachea isn’t midline. It’s in two pieces. In the autopsy, I discovered his neck had been broken.”

Kent thought of the murder cases that cluttered his desk. “Same as the Harrison girl. Her neck was broken. Any chance wild dogs could have done this?”

Bill’s meaty lips thinned into a line. “Harrison had no bite marks. Only Beau suffered extensive puncture wounds. For a dog to snap someone’s neck, it would have to be big and have impressive jaw strength. Until your men find me an animal like that, I’m leaving Beau’s death a homicide.” He wiped his damp brow. “What worries me is this woman’s bones show there might be a break in her neck, too. If that’s the case, someone around here could have a long history of murder.”

Kent grew irate. He’d left the turmoil of working for the New Orleans Police Department to get away from the steady dose of homicides. Ten years ago, St. Benedict had been the answer to a prayer for him, his wife, and their two boys. He didn’t want to think such horror could have remained hidden for so long in the idyllic town.

“Send me the preliminary results of the autopsy as soon as you get them.” Kent pinched the bridge of his nose, fighting off a headache. “I want it in my hand when I tell Gage Devereaux what we found. He might recall someone who went missing. He’s lived here all his life and is bound to have heard something.”

Bill swatted at a passing fly. “He won’t be happy to hear about another body. You know how protective he is of St. Benedict.”

“Yep. I expect this will piss him off.”

The patriarch and owner of the biggest employer, Benedict Brewery, Gage oversaw everything in the town. Some called him a control freak—a trait many had seen in his son, Beau—but to Kent, Gage was thorough, detail-oriented, and would have made a great detective if he hadn’t taken over the family business.

“He’s gonna ask you if this has anything to do with the investigation into Beau’s death.” Bill frowned. “What’re you gonna tell him?”

Kent clenched his jaw. “We don’t know if any of these deaths are related.”

“Yet,” Bill added. “Seems like an awfully big coincidence to me.”

Kent pulled keys from the front pocket of his jeans. “There’re too many coincidences going on around here, and they all seem to center on this damned river. When can you get me a DNA report?”

“Might take a while.” Bill scratched his head. “Budget constraints and the backlog of cases clogging the system have slowed everything down.”

“How long are we talking? A week?”

Bill snorted. “More like weeks. A long-dead Jane Doe isn’t exactly a priority. Otherwise, we could get a rush on it.”

“Then we’ll just have to wait and see what we get back,” Kent grumbled.

Bill went to the driver’s side of the van and spoke to the technician. He then waved at Kent before walking away.

The sheriff waited as the van slowly eased onto the main road, with Bill’s black SUV following close behind.

Alone, Kent removed his hat and gazed up at the tall pines rimming the parking lot. Cresting above the tallest of the trees was The Abbey’s single charred limestone spire—its twin lost in the fire.

The serene place had witnessed so many atrocities—suicide, fire, and Dawn Moore’s murder. Kent would never understand what the Benedictine monks who founded the seminary ever saw in that cursed land. Legends about the abandoned abbey and its wild dogs had floated around the community for as long as anyone could remember.

When the dogs appear, death is near.

He’d never believed any of the stories until now. Kent feared there might be some truth to the legend, after all.

And the worst was yet to come.

Review:

5 stars!

Exciting, with a palpable feeling of foreboding from the first page!

Months after the events of Halloween night and the death of the psychotic scion of the wealthy and influential Devereaux family, the bones of another young woman are found half-buried in the sand of the beach of the Bogue Falaya River in St. Benedict, Louisiana. Discovered after the deaths of several local high school students, residents are scared. But Leslie Moore, whose twin sister, Dawn, was one of the victims, and her friends, Sara, Kelly, and Taylor, know more than they're telling about what's happening in the formerly sleepy little town.

As the pressure of keeping their secret takes its toll on the four girls, a new boy arrives in town, and he's eager to make new friends and seemingly learn all he can about the Devereauxs, especially Gage, the current head of the family. But when one more young woman is found dead at the river's edge, rumors fly, and suspicions start to take over. Is Luke Cross who he says he is? And does the girls' paranoia perhaps have a foothold in reality? It certainly feels to Leslie like she's being watched.

River of Wrath is the sequel to River of Ashes and is the second book in the Alexandra Weis and Lucas Astor co-penned St. Benedict series. From the first page, there is an uneasy atmosphere in the town, and revelations from the main character, Leslie Moore, will undoubtedly establish the 'why?' But menace and foreboding continue to creep across every page as an unknown entity stalks Leslie and her friends.

The book is an ultimate page-turner, and you don't need to have read the first book to enjoy this one. However, the setup in River of Ashes provides a clearer understanding of the existing relationships and the trauma experienced before the current action, making for a more satisfying story overall. The authors have created a believable small town in southeastern Louisiana, populated by an entire community. Even with the plethora of characters, the book is easy to read and follow, and the pages seemed to fly by as the story unfolded. As a bonus, I want to compliment the creators on the eye-catching book cover and the atmospheric graphics on each chapter's first page, giving the impression of peering into the trees edging the Bogue Falaya or surrounding the abbey.

The characters engaged me immediately. Leslie, grieving the loss of her twin and feeling some responsibility for her death, is also neck-deep in regret over her complicity in what happened to Beau Devereaux. In addition, she's confused by her attraction to Luke and conflicted about her decision to break things off with her longtime boyfriend, Derek, who isn't making it any easier. Taylor is obsessed with the Devereaux family's background, seeking the key to understanding what happened to her and the others. Sara, confident and callous, is self-absorbed and self-serving, while Kelly is fearful. They are all slowly falling apart. The reader is a spectator to the waking nightmare the girls' lives have become since the events of book one.

The feeling of foreboding is palpable throughout, and shocking twists and turns make for an exciting story you won't want to put down. I recommend RIVER OF WRATH to readers who enjoy contemporary young adult thrillers that have a touch of the paranormal and fans of the previous book in the series.

(Note: Sam is using John as an alias)

Rachel hurried across the plowed parking lot, slipping through the narrow opening in the mounded snow, to the nearest entrance. She made her way to the main foyer with the idea of meeting back up with Sophia to return her car keys. Stepping into the Tuscan garden atrium, she spotted Sam stalking down the room, his cheek and eye swollen.

Joey trailed after him, dragging his oxygen tank. “You should be proud of yourself. You took the punch like a man.”

For all of the crazy, insane, and deadly situations they found themselves in, Sam rarely lost his cool. He was always thinking, always working out a solution. No matter how hot things got, her man was ice.

The look on his face said her glacier was in Global Warming meltdown.

Sam spun on his heel and took a step toward the old man. Rachel called out sharply, “Johnny!”

At the sound of her voice, Sam stopped and just breathed.

“Joey,” Sophie said, her soft voice once again. “What did you do this time?”

“Nothing,” he said, wearing an expression of angelic innocence. “John and I were leaving church when this bear of a man walks into me. I told him, politely of course, that those were my feet he was standing on. And then he punched John.” Joey went to Rachel, taking her hand. “You have a lot to be proud of in your husband. He stood up to a man twice his weight without breaking.”

“You could sue.” Paul crossed his arms over his chest. “We could get a million, maybe five.”

“We’re not suing,” Sam said with authority. “You,” he snapped at Joey. “You’re going to make me whole on the seven g’s he took off of me.”

Rachel gasped. “Seven grand! You lost seven thousand dollars? Wait. Where did you get seven grand to lose?”

“He didn’t lose anything,” Joey said. “The money was stolen and as I might have had a teeny bit to do with it, I’ll cover it.”

Sam snorted and started walking toward their rooms.

“Don’t be like that, son. I’m good for it. You know that.” While Sam kept walking, Joey turned to Rachel. “Your man hold a grudge?”

Rachel calculated her response. She slid into a sad expression and shook her head. “Not usually, but he’s been worried about money. We should get the prototype in soon and with it the estimate for production. He’s expecting a big number.” She looked down the hallway. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to check on him.”

Inside the cottage, Rachel found Sam sprawled on the couch, a towel filled with ice pressed to his cheek. She closed the door and let go of the grin she’d been restraining.

“That man is a menace,” Sam said, scowling.

She swallowed her smile and crawled next to him. “What happened?”

“What he said. He picked the biggest, meanest bastard in the casino to flop in front of. The guy was a cop.”

Rachel gasped. “Sam.”

“A crooked one, luckily. Says he’s seen every scam there is and if I don’t want my ‘pops’ to spend the night in lock up, I better pony up the bail. I paid him two grand and was good until Joey opens his mouth about the other five I’d won at black jack. The idiot.” He shook his head. “And you thought he might be a pro. There was nothing professional about the shit he pulled.”

Rachel moved to the corner of the couch and tugged until Sam’s head was in her lap. “Maybe it isn’t all bad,” she said, smoothing his hair back. “The more he feels he owes you, the more he’ll invest.”

Sam relaxed under her attention. “Maybe.”

“Did you hear their latest idea?” She waited until he shook his head. “Paul thinks we should sell shares of the company. Instead of taking good faith investors, we should sell stock. The more I think on the idea, the more I like it. I can create a certificate, get it printed on heavy paper.”

He removed the ice pack to stare at her. “Paul.”

She put it back. “He’s harmless.”

“He isn’t, but it’s a good idea.

Review:

5 stars!

With its likable characters and clever plot, GOOD FOR IT is better than great!

Good For It by author T.G. Wolff is the 30th entry in the terrific novella anthology, A Grifter’s Song, which follows the moves and maneuvers of Sam and Rachel, a pair of con artists on the lam from the capo of the Philadelphia mob. The books stand alone and are written by a variety of different authors. From the reviews, each is a gem in its own right, and this tale is outstanding as well.

The main characters, Sam and Rachel, are fun and flirty with each other: a committed couple. They are also ever-ready with a con to separate a mark from their money while evading their mob pursuers and setting up a safe exit strategy. While cold-blooded and unsentimental in their endeavors, I think a couple of the residents of Catalonia Shoals got under their guard this time. The ending carries a fair amount of melancholy.

The senior facility sounds like a sweet deal, and the residents are absolutely living their best lives in style and comfort, but they are not at all who they seem. I enjoyed the older characters immensely, and though I liked the two con artists, I was delighted with the outcome and laughed out loud over some of the dialogue as the real con was revealed.

With its likable characters and clever plot, I recommend GOOD FOR IT to readers who enjoy crime fiction and characters of a certain age.

Race Against Time (Sands of Time Trilogy, #2) by C.J. Peterson

Race Against Time (Sands of Time Trilogy, #2)Race Against Time by C.J. Peterson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This second book in the worthwhile trilogy even tops the first!

The Hunt's parents, taken by thugs from Dr. Noah Roth's Maine-based clinic, Blake and Sheriff Wyatt Reynolds anxiously await Holly's recuperation to confront their two newly discovered half-siblings. Deanna and Adam Roth have been sedated until Holly regains her full strength in case of a struggle, as she is the only one capable of subduing the two again. But once the pair hears Blake's and Holly's story, they begin to see different possibilities for their futures and those of their siblings still under Dr. Roth's control back in Maine. Together with their new allies, they plan to rescue Grace, Ben, and their remaining brothers and sisters.

Meanwhile, Holly and Blake's new friends from the church youth group also discover they have drawn the evil doctor's attention. Afraid their continued presence at home would make their families targets, they secretly set out on the road after Sheriff Reynolds and the four gifted teens hoping their additional research and ideas would help free the Hunts and the other teens held in Maine.

Race Against Time is the second book in the Sands of Time Trilogy by award-winning author C.J. Peterson, and if possible, even better than book one, Appointed Time! Happily, the story picks up right where book one left us, and we finally get to catch up with the main adult characters in the story: Hope (Grace), Ben, and Alex. I had an idea where the story would go with Ben and Hope, but Alex's role, when revealed, was a complete surprise!

The teenage contingent from the church has organized nicely in order to help their new friends, Holly and Blake, as they head to Maine to rescue their adoptive parents, recently discovered siblings, and stop Professor Roth from continuing his genetic experimentation. I loved how the four gifted teens learned from one another, especially in what their unique skills are capable of, but also about mundane things such as fast food or Slurpees.

More so than was the case in book one, this story relies on the characters living and sharing their Christian faith. The teenagers routinely challenged each other to examine their actions and spirituality when the plot created the opportunity for them to do so. Even as an older adult, some of the shared analogies and discussions were valuable reminders and inspirational. However, even if Christian-forward fiction is not your cup of tea, there is plenty more action and adventure to enjoy here. I am looking forward to getting into the trilogy's final book as soon as possible.

I recommend RACE AGAINST TIME to readers who enjoy contemporary young adult Christian science fiction/fantasy stories and those who read and enjoyed the first book in the trilogy. See my review of the first book in the Sands of Time Trilogy, Appointed Time, here!

REVIEW

5 stars!

With an almost ensemble team of sleuths and its interesting glass bead theme, this long-awaited addition to the Glass Bead Mystery series will not disappoint.

Born to Bead Wild is the fifth book in author Janice Peacock’s delightful and quirky Glass Bead Mystery series and is a long-awaited addition, as the last book was published in 2018. The main character, Jacqueline “Jax” O’Connell, is smart and savvy, and in this story, she has quite a bit of time on her hands to look around and uncover clues to what is going on at Full Moon Farm, the site of the workshop. She’s good-hearted, and though initially annoyed by Val accompanying her and Tessa, she stands up for her neighbor at every chance and willingly lends a helping hand. Tessa is the lead instructor for the glass bead class along with their friend, Adriana Jones, and although she must focus on teaching, she still has Jax’s back and urges her on when needed. For me, it was Val’s camp experience that took center stage. Honestly, I could feel the horror of those menus and weird staples, and I applauded what Val could create out of that mess. Frankly, I would have starved to death or worn a rut in the road to Port Angeles, going for food before eating any of the camp owner’s scheduled meals.

The murder mystery and the amateur investigation were solid and intriguing. The victim doesn’t have much page/screen time, but it’s enough to know he’s trouble with a capital “T.” In contrast to our three heroines, quite a few unpleasant folks are involved with the workshop, including the owners of Full Moon Farm, and some make for good suspects. I never clued in on who the actual killer was until the reveal, though, with hindsight being 20/20, perhaps I should have. Then, too, the final resolution of the case comes with its terrific twist.

With an almost ensemble team of sleuths, a great setting, and the interesting glass bead art and jewelry theme, I recommend BORN TO BE BEAD WILD to cozy mystery readers who enjoy artistic or craft-themed stories, books with a rural camp location or set in the Pacific Northwest, in general, but especially fans of the previous books in the series.

About Wined and Died in New Orleans

The second in a fantastic new cozy mystery series with a vintage flair from USA Today bestselling and Agatha Award–winning author Ellen Byron.

It’s hurricane season in New Orleans and vintage cookbook fan Ricki James-Diaz is trying to shelve her weather-related fears and focus on her business, Miss Vee’s Vintage Cookbook and Kitchenware Shop, housed in the magnificent Bon Vee Culinary House Museum.

Repairs on the property unearth crates of very old, very valuable French wine, buried by the home’s builder, Jean-Louis Charbonnet. Ricki, who’s been struggling to attract more customers to Miss Vee’s, is thrilled when her post about the discovery of this long-buried treasure goes viral. She’s less thrilled when the post brings distant Charbonnet family members out of the woodwork, all clamoring for a cut of the wine’s sale.

When a dead body turns up in Bon Vee’s cheery fall decorations, the NOPD zeroes in on Eugenia Charbonnet Felice as the prime suspect, figuring that as head of the Charbonnet family, she has the most to gain. Ricki is determined to uncover the real culprit, but she can’t help noticing that Eugenia is acting strangely. Ricki wonders what kind of secret her mentor has bottled up, and fears what might happen if she uncorks it.

In the second Vintage Cookbook Mystery, Ricki has to help solve a murder, untangle family secrets, and grow her business, all while living under the threat of a hurricane that could wipe out everything from her home to Bon Vee.

Review
5 stars!

Another fun and delightful cozy mystery from the pen of Ellen Byron/Maria DiRico!

Wined and Died in New Orleans is the second book in Ellen Byron’s Vintage Cookbook Mystery series, and it is a fitting follow-up to the fantastic debut novel, Bayou Book Thief. After only two books, I’ve become an ardent fan of this series and know I will be recommending it to friends and family, while waiting for the next in line to be born.

Ricki James-Diaz is such an engaging and relatable character; you can’t help but like her and become invested in her success, both with her shop, Miss Vee’s, and in her amateur sleuthing. She’s endured some hard knocks in her life, starting with her birth. She consciously must work to overcome her anxiety, using positive affirmations, yoga, and calming mantras. I love how she’s loyal and protective of her friends and coworkers, and I enjoy the descriptions of her vintage household business, old cookbooks, and kitchenware of times past. In real life, we would probably be bidding competitively against each other!

The plot is solid, exciting, and flavored by the New Orleans setting, a massive number of recurring and new characters (Don’t worry! The author provides a handy cast list at the beginning of the book), and the unrelenting presence of avarice. Jean-Louis, a newly discovered Charbonnet cousin, is a creepily oily and smarmy antagonist that you won’t mind disliking and makes for a great antagonist in the story. He is not the only one, as there are a couple of new faces that will attract a "Dislike" as well. As the plot progresses, there are several good suspects, each with a motive for killing the victim. There are twists in the story that really make things interesting. Additionally, some of the dialogue was so deliciously good I laughed out loud.

With its iconic Big Easy setting, an engaging amateur sleuth, vintage kitchen tools, and a puzzle of a murder mystery to resolve, I recommend WINED AND DIED IN NEW ORLEANS to cozy mystery readers who would enjoy a culinary-themed story with a vintage flair and those who enjoyed the first book in the series.

READ AN EXCERPT:

She squinted to see if she could figure out what was crawling up the mound. Then it hit her hard. It was people, or at least what looked like people. It was hard to make them out at that distance. They were all struggling to get to the top. More light escaped, throwing streaks of shadows and lights on the crowded mountain.

“Impressive, don’t you think?”

She just about jumped out of her skin when the voice sounded right behind her, and she whirled around and fell on her butt. When she tried to speak, the words caught against what she was looking at and wouldn’t come out.

It was a dog, a bull terrier, in fact, standing on its hind legs sporting a monocle, a mustache, and a fine green vest.

“Name’s Charon,” he continued, holding out a paw. “And you are?”

Bri blinked at him. Where was she? Words escaped her immediately.

“No matter,” he finished, dropping the unacknowledged paw. “If you want to try for heaven, you need to hurry.” He pointed at the giant black mountain.

The creatures crawling up the steep slope seemed to climb faster now. As the light increased, she could see some used ropes, while others hung from strange floatation devices or a bunch of balloons. There were single-man helicopters, beanie hats, ladders completely constructed of bodies, and even great feathered wings. Few of these things were very successful. Climbing might have been the best option from what Bri was witnessing.

REVIEW:
4 stars!

Imaginative and suspenseful spicy paranormal romance!

Phantom Hearts is the latest novella by author Minnette Meador and part of the Ghost series, which began with A Ghost of a Chance. The plot is intriguing, with the main character, psychic Brianna “Bri” Eugenia Alberic, discovering she’s been impregnated by the demon, Reggie: seduced in her dreams. She learns of her condition only a day after she and the man she loves, Sgt. John Thompson, finally consummate their relationship. I could feel her shock and anger as she came to understand what had been done to her. The two main male characters are complete opposites of one another. While Reggie literally drags her through hell, John goes through hell to rescue her.

The story contains explicit adult situations, so this one is not for children or readers who prefer their romances sweet. Some scenes are loving, passionate moments between two people who have long waited to commit to each other. However, others include Reggie’s scene of seduction and lust-filled orgies in the third circle of hell. The author has the marvelous ability to make both types vividly real, and they make quite an impression.

Supporting the main cast are some fascinating and quirky characters. Bri’s deceased grandmother, Gomo, has some fun moments and always has her back. I also enjoyed Reggie’s sister, Beatrice, and Charon from Purgatory.

With its tense and well-crafted plot and a cast of likable characters, recurring and new, I recommend PHANTOM HEARTS to readers of spicy paranormal romances.

READ AN EXCERPT:

Chapter 1 – The Grass Thief

“Watch your left!” shouted the leader of the golden eagles. Before the angel could maneuver to his right, blinding lightning struck across the dark clouds, just missing his left wing. The very next moment, deafening thunder numbed everything. The angel and the accompanying eagles held their nerves and pushed through the expanding wall of clouds. The leader of the eagles anticipated growing dangers and feared they would get lost. He yelled, “I can’t help you if I can’t see where we are going. The storm is escalating into a tornado. We won’t be able to withstand these powerful winds for long. Everyone, move up above the thunderstorm. We’ll resume our journey from there.”

The angel and the eagles listened to the leader’s call and flew up above the clouds. Looking down on the thundering clouds, the leader took a deep sigh of relief. He quickly turned his head toward the others to check their condition. “What happened to your wings?” the shocked leader screamed at the angel.

The angel looked instinctively on his sides. There were no wings but flapping arms. A sudden gush of panic infused in him as he realized he was just a boy and not an angel. Right away, the horrified boy fell into the dark mushrooming clouds, screaming from the bottom of his gut. His arms and legs kept flailing in despair until he disappeared into the dark swirling storm.

REVIEW:
4 stars!

A whimsical and fantastical tale young readers are sure to enjoy!

Siba – The Eternal Quest by author B. Singh is a fun and fascinating adventure story for middle-grade readers. With both magical elements and an exciting quest in the fantasy plot, young readers will enjoy Siba’s journey, his ability to communicate with animals and The Great Forest, and learn a variety of lessons and nature lore in the process.

I was immediately taken with the story, especially when The Great Forest enabled Siba to communicate with the forest animals. The sights Siba encounters on his journey are fantastic, and I liked that it all started because of his love and compassion for Celine, the hungry sheep at his uncle’s house. Siba is a kind and soft-hearted boy, displayed by his actions throughout the book. Young readers will easily relate to this character and his gentle regard for others.

There is a darker, somber side to the story that, unfortunately, some readers may also be able to relate to. Siba’s uncle is an alcoholic, and the young boy must deal with his drunken and abusive behavior and, later, his death. The boy feels responsible for his drinking and death, but his “found” family of other villagers is there to support and help him overcome this.

With its whimsy, wonder, and lovable main character, I recommend SIBA – THE ETERNAL QUEST to middle-grade and older elementary-level readers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

B. Singh grew up in a small city, Chandigarh, located near the foothills of the mighty Himalayas in northwest India. Since his childhood, he has always had an inquisitive mindset. He doesn’t settle for the pre-existing answers if they don’t make sense to him. Instead, he explores, experiments, and finds the answer himself. He has traveled across India from north to south not only for his education but also to explore different cultures and values. To continue his journey of exploration, he moved from India to Canada. After graduating from the University of Windsor, Canada, he conceived the idea of compiling his learnings in the form of a spiritual fantasy book. This well-crafted and awe-inspiring adventurous journey into a fantasy world is full of chiseled gems of wisdom that will enrich the lives of every human being on earth.
