Book Review: Trapped and Tested (DeeLo Myer Cat Rescue Mystery, #2) by Sharon Marchisello

Trapped and Tested (DeeLo Myer Cat Rescue Mystery)Trapped and Tested by Sharon Marchisello
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A great follow-up to the first book in the series!

Trapped and Tested is the second book in author Sharon Marchisello’s intriguing and informative DeeLo Myer Cat Rescue Mystery series and is a great follow-up to the debut novel, Trap, Neuter, Die. The suspense gets going right away with DeeLo’s niece, Demi, getting notice of a DNA relative match and the pair’s late-night discovery of an assault victim near the site of DeeLo’s current TNVR (Trap, neuter, vaccinate, and return) project.

Demi Myer, the daughter of DeeLo’s older sister, Desiree, has long been curious about the identity of her birth father, a question her mother has steadfastly refused to answer. When she matches with a previously unknown half-brother, Kwintone Johnson, on a genealogical site, she includes DeeLo in her efforts to get to know him. He, too, is searching for his birth father, and may have found the answer for them both. But there’s something about Kwintone that doesn’t sit well with DeeLo; his secretive behavior, evasive answers, and too-smooth personality make her suspect his intentions, and when he signs up to do community service with her TNVR program, arriving far too late to help and leaving early, her opinion of him doesn’t improve. Leaving the site for the night, DeeLo finds his car abandoned on a nearby road, his cellphone inside, and no sign of Kwintone. Alarmed when he doesn’t soon return, she and Demi search the nearby area only to find a badly wounded man instead, whose cellphone shows Kwintone’s number as his last caller.

In the meantime, DeeLo is struggling with her relationship with Barry, who is spending an inordinate amount of time and effort assisting his devious and unpleasant ex-wife, Victoria, with her campaign for an empty seat on the county’s board of commissioners. Victoria is no fan of DeeLo’s, and the feeling is mutual. But Barry suddenly seems blind to Victoria’s nastiness and may be a little too willing to lend his support.

I love that DeeLo has really settled into her new life in Pecan Point, with her newly adopted cat, Manny, her volunteer work, and spending time with her mother, who is in memory care. She has taken charge of and champions the TNVR program every chance she gets and hasn’t given up on her mission to update the county’s outdated laws regarding the care and processes involving stray animals. She sees some light at the end of the tunnel in a rival candidate for commissioner, Zach Kirkpatrick, a seemingly perfect counterpoint to Victoria, and jumps at the chance to volunteer on his campaign, putting an additional strain on her personal relationship with Barry. Barry, on the other hand, is walking a treacherous path if he wants to do right by her.

While Demi is only a year’s difference in age, she almost seems to come from a much younger generation. Both she and Kwintone are reluctant to share needed information with DeeLo, while expecting a lot in return from her. Their repeated avoidance of giving a straight answer is frustrating not only to DeeLo but to me as well!

The story unfolds quickly, and I became invested in DeeLo’s life, struggles, and efforts to get answers right away. The little Town of Pecan Point gained more and more personality in this story as the locals debated their choices for the empty commissioner’s spot and all the proposed improvements for the future of their community. The author tackles the topic of animal testing head-on and offers a thought-provoking update on the current advancements that are making this horrible practice a thing of the past. There are several viable suspects to consider as DeeLo (and readers) work toward the final resolution of this latest case.

I recommend TRAPPED AND TESTED to readers of cozy mysteries, especially those who enjoy stories featuring cats, feral cat colonies, and TNVR programs.

Airplanes, Atlanta & an Assassin
A Katie & Maverick Cozy Mystery
by
Mary Seifert

Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Secret Staircase Books
Publication Date: July 10, 2025
Page count: 274 pages

SYNOPSIS:

A National Competition and a Deadly Detour

High school teacher Katie Wilk is thrilled when her students qualify for Mock Trial America, a prestigious courtroom competition in Atlanta. Alongside her best friend and fellow teacher Jane Mackey, a team of eager teens, and a crew of devoted chaperones, Katie boards a flight from Minnesota—ready for a week of intellectual showdowns and Southern hospitality. But things go sideways before the plane is even off the ground.

With canceled flights, endless delays, and one particularly obnoxious passenger stirring up trouble, the trip turns into a logistical, almost deadly, nightmare. When that same rude traveler turns up later in Atlanta, the chaos takes a deadly turn—and suspicion lands squarely on the Mackey family.

As Katie digs deeper, she uncovers a web of secrets: stolen documents, corporate espionage, dangerous toxins, and enough motive to make her question everything. Can she untangle the truth before the killer strikes again?

Luckily, she’s got help—from Maverick, her sharp-nosed, loyal Labrador retriever and trained search-and-rescue dog, who’s always ready to sniff out danger.

Smart, suspenseful, and full of heart, this latest installment in Mary Seifert’s charming cozy mystery series delivers Southern intrigue, tricky puzzles, and the kind of dogged determination only a Lab (and a resolute teacher) can provide.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT:

Weather delayed the incoming plane. We had boarded thirty minutes behind schedule, and forty-two minutes later, after anxious bouts of fits and giggles checking watches and phone screens, we saw our pilot step out of the cockpit to make a brief announcement.

“Good morning, folks. Sorry for the delay, but due to mechanical issues, we’ve had to cancel our non-stop flight to Atlanta.” As the air around me took on a rumble, he smiled uneasily and took a big breath. “We apologize for any inconvenience, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you and get you to your final destination as quickly as possible. Please gather your belongings and check the seat pocket before disembarking. See the gate attendant for more details.”

We exited the aircraft. Our students crowded around me, and I said decisively, “We’ll catch another plane soon and still arrive in plenty of time to take advantage of everything we’ve planned before your competition begins in three days. Don’t worry.”

Famous last words. I hoped I wasn’t constructing a false narrative for our future.

I massaged my temples as we waited our turn and inched our way to the desk for information. The smile glued to the young man’s face never wavered as he checked our tickets. “It’s a very busy Memorial weekend.” His fingers flew over the keys. “It’ll take a bit of maneuvering to get your entire group in the sky, but we’ll get you on the next available flight, however ...” He looked up at me, and one corner of his mouth turned down in a bit of alarm. “The operative word is available.”

My heart leaped to my throat, and I gritted my teeth in frustration.

“And a nonstop will be impossible.” His eyebrows, cheeks, and lips morphed into one big apology. “You’ll be rerouted first through Detroit.”

Book Review: When Sparks Fly (Pinegrove FD, #1) by Libby Kay

When Sparks Fly (A Pinegrove FD Novel Book 1)When Sparks Fly by Libby Kay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A satisfying story of hope and healing ushers in this new Southern romantic series.

When Sparks Fly is the first book in author Libby Kay’s new southern romance series set in Pinegrove, Georgia, and features two broken but good-hearted people who both need hope, healing, and a new love. Recently disappointed in love, Fire Lieutenant Trevor Mays receives the news that his rival in love has also gotten the promotion to Captain that Trevor deserved. His dream job as a firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father to eventually become chief, suddenly becomes grim as the new captain deliberately tries to make his life as miserable as possible.

Meanwhile, in nearby Savannah, Whitney Kerr discovers the long-time boyfriend, who just dumped her less than a month before, proposing to another woman, captured on live television during a baseball game. At a loss for what to do with her life, she embarks on an impromptu road trip, ending up in Pinegrove, the site of many happy childhood memories. Tired and needing a hotel room, Whitney is dismayed to learn every hotel in the small town is completely booked due to its renowned 4th of July celebrations that are just kicking off. However, she is drawn under the wing of the kind, widowed Daisy Mays, who happens to have a handsome and eligible firefighter son who needs a breath of fresh air, just like Whitney, to breeze into his life.

Whitney and Trevor have much in common when it comes to their recent and unfortunate love lives. It was lovely seeing these two hurt souls find their way to each other with the help of Daisy and others. Both are kind and generous people who you can’t help but root for to find their happily ever after with each other while growing individually into better people at the same time.

The plot is well-paced, and the story is easy to enjoy. It is also a little lighthearted as both recognize that their stories are the perfect fodder for a romance novel. The tale unfolds from both Whitney’s and Trevor’s points of view, so readers get to see both sides of their story. This couple seems made for each other, and their cautious but strong attraction to each other is almost palpable. This was an interesting and satisfying story to sink into and just enjoy.

I recommend WHEN SPARKS FLY to romance readers who enjoy second-chance romances or small-town Georgia settings.

Book Review: Trap, Neuter, Die (DeeLo Myer Cat Rescue Mystery, #1) by Sharon Marchisello

Trap, Neuter, Die (DeeLo Myer Cat Rescue Mystery)Trap, Neuter, Die by Sharon Marchisello
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fascinating debut to this well-done new cat rescue-themed mystery series!

Trap, Neuter, Die is the first book in author Sharon Marchisello's new DeeLo Myer Cat Rescue Mystery series, featuring realistic and serious details related to the TNR program method for dealing with feral and/or community cat populations. When DeeLo Myer and her cat rescue mentor Catherine "Cat" Foster discover the body of a local cat enthusiast and bookstore owner while on the victim's property setting cat traps, they naturally are included on the police's suspect list. But when Cat is arrested by the local beat cop who has a grudge against her, DeeLo knows this is no time to pussyfoot around and starts her own investigation into the woman's murder.

Divorcée DeeLo Myer (Delores Diane Myer-Johansson) is new in the small Georgia community of Pecan Point, having moved there from California to look after her aging mother suffering from Alzheimer's when she makes the mistake of driving after imbibing that second glass of wine and ending up with a DUI on her record and community service to fulfill. Choosing to work off her hours with the Pecan Point Humane Society, she meets Catherine Foster, or Cat as she is universally known, to help with the TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return) program to cut down the population growth of abandoned, stray, feral, and community cats. On her first night out setting traps, not only do she and Cat discover a murder victim, but DeeLo learns that Cat is the target of a vindictive local cop who uses the county's outdated animal control laws to harass her and thwart her good deeds. Along with her amateur investigation of the murder, the goal of changing those antiquated laws becomes an important aspect of the story.

This cozy mystery hits the ground running with the discovery of the victim, which occurs almost immediately. The fallout from the three women's (Azmina, Cat, and Deelo) personal lives makes an impact on the story's trajectory. There are a couple of possibilities for the motive behind the murder to consider and a number of suspects to eliminate before the final reveal, but the author subtly lays out the clues for sharp armchair detectives to note. While the cat rescue theme is not completely unique to the cozy mystery genre, its handling here is more professional and serious than previous works I've seen. In fact, the entire tone of the book is a bit more serious and dark than many cozies, but I mean that in a good and satisfying way. The storyline of DeeLo's mother and her niece Demi also offers some very frustrating realities to the main character's backstory and complex life.

I recommend TRAP, NEUTER, DIE to cozy mystery readers.

Book Review: Lethal Impulse by Steve Rush

Lethal ImpulseLethal Impulse by Steve Rush
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Engaging characters and a compelling mystery of murder, revenge, and obsession.

Lethal Impulse by Steve Rush is a compelling thriller and whydunit mystery featuring a serial killer targeting sweet high school girls in a small Georgia town. With its engaging main characters and race-against-the-clock pace, I was completely immersed in the suspenseful search for the killer, so much so that I was annoyed by any interruptions to my reading.

Main character Neil Caldera, the disgraced former NYPD detective, has a genuine and dedicated servant’s heart. His law enforcement career was sidelined, and he was left emotionally affected by the death of an innocent bystander by one of his bullets during his righteous shooting of a serial killer in self-defense. Pursuing a new life as a man of the cloth, Neil accepts a ministerial position at a church in the small town of Madison, Georgia. Welcomed into the community, he keeps his former life as a detective to himself. However, the local police chief, also a deacon at his church, is aware of his academic degree related to crime and law enforcement, as is the chief’s wife, who had developed an uncomfortable and open sexual interest in Neil that she just won’t let go.

The story unfolds from multiple points of view, including Neil’s, crime scene Sergeant Sloane Azevedo’s, and several supporting characters. Neil is drawn into the murder of a popular local high school student at the behest of the police chief, who wants to use his expert insight into the gruesome murder to gain an advantage in solving the case before he must call in the state officials. Neil and Sloane share a mutual attraction from the start, and their increased proximity and the story’s suspense soon ignites their formerly slow-burn romance into a wonderfully passionate love story.

The action moves quickly as the pair follows up on clues while the case’s lead detective does his official investigation, working in concert and sharing information. The author creates a horrifically ritualistic-style murder and an evocatively terrifying crime scene, including some unique and bloody clues left behind as a taunt. Realistic details of what is seen, heard, and even smelled bring the crime scene and the subsequent investigation to life. When the murderer is uncovered, the plot shifts to finding concrete evidence to arrest them and answering the ultimate question of why.

While the story was mesmerizing, and I really didn’t want to put it down; I did have some quibbles with the execution of the story, such as continuity issues; some stilted, unnatural feeling or cryptic dialogue; overly descriptive passages of random physical movements by characters that were not critical to the plot; small plot holes; and questions left unanswered by close of the book. None kept me from wanting to dive back into the story.

I recommend LETHAL IMPULSE to readers of mysteries, suspense, and thrillers who are not sensitive to graphic scenes of murder.

 REVIEW:

5 stars!

Small-town secrets bring murder and threaten Harmony Holt’s family home.

Deacon of the Dead is the excellent first book in author M. J. O’Neill’s new cozy mystery series featuring the Second Chance Inn in Clinton, Georgia. When hometown girl Harmony Anne Holt returns home to keep the Second Chance Inn open after her father takes a tumble while repairing the roof, secrets in the small town result in murder and threaten her family’s home with foreclosure.

While the murder mystery and subsequent investigation, amateur and professional, are intriguing and tightly plotted, the story is as much about coming back to one’s roots and second chances. Harmony thought she’d escaped the small town and deliberately stayed away for years, but she clearly has unresolved issues, including her strong feelings for Seth Johnson.

The premise of capitalizing on the locally filmed hit TV series Walker, Zombie Ranger to bring tourists in, revitalize the fading town, and save her family’s historic home was fun and unique. I enjoyed the zombie-themed activities and puns that seemed to crop up throughout. The author also has a clear talent for clever, laugh-out-loud dialogue, and the chemistry between Harmony and Seth fairly sizzles.

I recommend DEACON OF THE DEAD to cozy mystery readers who enjoy sparkling dialogue and a romance-forward story.

She's also trying to help the missing woman's children, evade a young reporter, and deal with the sudden reappearance of an old high school flame.

With all of Hazel's efforts, can the missing woman be found before it's too late?

My Review

This riveting new addition to the Hazel Dean Mystery series hooked me from the start!

Longing Is Violet Dusk is the second book in author Josalyn McAllister's cozy mystery series featuring bookstore owner and amateur sleuth Hazel Randolph Dean, and I was immediately absorbed by this excellent follow-up to the series starter, Guilt Is Midnight Blue. I enjoyed the smart and tense plot and the sprinkling of book titles and other literary references throughout the story.

The search for the missing Nina is time-sensitive, and you can feel the urgency. For most of the book, there is absolutely no sign of the woman, no clues whatsoever. However, there are big personalities at play in her story, and many have a load of regret weighing them down and guiding their actions. Nina is confused about what her future holds. Lance and his brother, Dansby, regret leaving young loves behind. I regretted having to put the book down to do life stuff.

Hazel, worried over the situation Nina's children are in, is also having to come to terms with her own children moving into young adulthood. Elias, who apparently has played his cards really close to the vest, surprises his mother with the realization he has a girlfriend. Emma is a sweet girl, but she has a bit of an Eddie Haskell vibe going that made me laugh out loud a couple of times.

The setting in the quaint small town of Red Gap, Georgia, is homey, comfortable, and picturesque, especially as it is nestled among the foothills of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, where much of the action takes place. It also has a great bookstore downtown!

Hazel does a great job ferreting out suspects' motives and developing interesting scenarios for what might have happened to Nina. The clues point in a couple of directions but eventually, all lead to the truth. The story keeps up a lively pace as everyone is worried Nina is lost or hurt, and early spring weather brings a storm and dropping temperatures at night to the search area. Uncle John keeps Hazel involved in the case with special tasks he assigns her, so there is plenty of amateur detection.

I recommend LONGING IS VIOLET DUSK to cozy mystery readers who enjoy a solid mystery with a touch of the mystical or paranormal in their stories, decisive, organized female protagonists, and a lovely small-town Georgia setting.
