Read an excerpt:

Manhattan, 1925

Everyone came to the Nightingale looking for something.

They didn’t have much else in common, the folks who snuck down the alley toward a single electric light that flickered like it had been forgotten for years and could burn out at any moment. You never knew who would whisper the password at the door under the light, who would make their way through the midnight velvet curtains that muffled loud laughter and louder jazz.

Maybe your family could have bought half of Fifth Avenue, or maybe you couldn’t even buy new shoes. More likely, you lived somewhere in between, with work that paid your bills and the hope, one day, of something a little more. At the Nightingale, it didn’t matter who you were in the daytime. If you could hold your booze and let loose on the dance floor and keep a secret for a stranger, you were in.

They came looking for excitement, for the thrill of breaking a law that no one liked anyway. They came to dance and drink and maybe find a new friend, the sort of friend who—¬ after a glass or three of champagne—¬ would meet them in a quiet corner to get a little bit friendlier.

They came because they loved the music, the way it curled through the air and carried them across the floor, the way the singer’s voice filled the room and made their hearts ache.

They came for the party. They came to escape.

If they were lucky, they could pretend that whatever waited for them back at home didn’t exist. They could lose themselves in the music and the arms of someone new. They could feel free, even if it would never last, because in that moment nothing mattered but the next dance, the next drink, the next hour.

If they were lucky, they found what they were looking for, and they left before trouble could find them.

But not everyone was lucky.

***

Vivian recognized the sound of danger before she even realized what she was hearing.

Twilight had settled on the city, humid and heavy and speckled with the glow of streetlamps. She and Beatrice Henry—¬ Beatrice Bluebird, as she was known at the Nightingale, where she sang six nights a week—¬ moved through it with the practiced carefulness of two women who were used to navigating New York’s streets alone. Their steps were quick, but their eyes were quicker, always on the lookout for a man who might be trouble or a cop who might be trailing them.

The Nightingale paid off the police weekly, like any other dance hall or juice joint. But everyone who worked there knew to be wary just the same.

It was that wariness that sent a prickle of warning down Vivian’s back when they were two blocks from the Nightingale’s back entrance.

“Bea—¬ ” Vivian tossed out a hand to stop her friend in the middle of the sidewalk. A few steps ahead of them, a cat yowled as it ran out of a narrow alley. “You hear that?”

For a moment, the only sound out of the ordinary was the distant grumble of thunder. Then Vivian heard it again.

“Look a little closer, pal.” The voice was low and menacing, snaking out of the shadows and clearly not meant to be overheard. “I want to make sure you and me is on the same page.”

“Viv—¬ ” Bea hissed, but Vivian couldn’t help herself; she took a step forward, just enough to peek down the alley.

Halfway down the narrow stretch of filthy brick walls, two men were just visible in the fast-¬ fading light. One had his back against a wall. He was the taller of the two, but he still shrank back from the menacing bulk of the second figure. That one loomed toward him, his wide shoulders cutting off any escape as he shoved some kind of paper toward the nervous man’s face.

“—told you, when I have something, I’ll let you—”

The menacing man shoved him against the wall, the gesture nearly careless enough to hide the violence of it. The voice broke off with a grunt of pain, but it had been enough. Usually, Vivian would have stayed far away from anything that sounded like a beating and wasn’t her business. But she recognized that voice.

“Don’t interrupt,” the menacing man snarled. “My boss don’t take kindly to rude fu—”

“It’s Spence,” Vivian hissed.

Bea tried to pull her away. “It’s not our business. We can tell Silence or Benny,” she whispered, naming two of the bruisers who worked at the Nightingale keeping customers—¬ and anyone else who needed it—¬ in line. “They’ll come handle it.”

“That’ll take too long.” Vivian shook her head, pulling away from Bea’s cautious hand and running down the alley toward trouble. “Hey! Leave him alone!”

The bruiser barely glanced over his shoulder at her, just cocked his fist back and drove it, almost casually, into the nervous man’s stomach. He doubled over, heaving and gasping for air, as his assailant tipped his hat mockingly. “We’ll be seeing you soon, boyo. You can count on it.”

He was gone before Vivian could reach them. She stood, panting and staring at the gap between buildings where he had disappeared. A drizzling rain began to fall, plastering her hair against her cheeks. She wasn’t dumb enough to go after him.

“You okay, Spence?” she asked instead, turning toward the remaining man as he braced his hands on his knees.

“Swell,” croaked the Nightingale’s second bartender, a lanky, mouthy, handsome grump. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“Apparently chasing off the fella who was about to beat you to a pulp,” she said, stung. Spence had been working at the Nightingale all summer and still hadn’t managed to endear himself to any of the other staff. But Vivian had expected at least some gratitude. Instead, he scowled at her like she was the one who had just punched him in the stomach, not the one who had run the attacker off. “But no need to say thanks or anything.”

He hauled himself upright, wincing. “I had it handled, you know,” he said, still sounding resentful. “I didn’t need a rescue.”

“Sure you did, pal,” Bea said, joining them at last. “That was a stupid thing to do, by the way,” she added, glancing at Vivian as she opened her umbrella and held it over both their heads. “Be glad he didn’t have a friend waiting to beat the stuffing out of you too.”

“My stuffing’s doing just fine,” Spence groused, pushing his wet hair off his forehead and straightening his jacket and tie.

“What was that about?” Vivian asked, laying a hand on his arm. “Spence? Are you in trouble?”

Book Review: Claws for Concern (Maddie Sparks Mystery, #3) by Lesley A. Diehl

Claws for Concern (Maddie Sparks Mystery)Claws for Concern by Lesley A. Diehl
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Murder gets personal when Maddie’s son, Richard, becomes a suspect in the murder of a client.

Claws For Concern is the third book in author Lesley A. Diehl’s fun and suspenseful Maddie Sparks Mystery series, and the stakes are exceptionally high for Maddie when her defense attorney son, Richard, is the prime suspect in the murder of a new client. When Denise Werner’s estranged husband was murdered in her yard, the police automatically looked hard at her, the angry wife, as their first choice of suspect. Being an old classmate of the best defense attorney in the area, she immediately seeks out Richard Sparks to represent her. But when her body is found in her parked car in front of Richard’s house the very next morning, the police turn their attention to him as their next most viable option.

The plot of the book is well-paced, with twists and turns at every corner. Maddie is beside herself with worry about Richard, and she lets loose her inner Mama Grizzly as she and Zack investigate not one but two murders. To add to Maddie’s distress, her friend Jane has reconnected with a crush from the past, a biker with a bad boy past, who doesn’t give off very trustworthy vibes. Her concerns that Jane’s headed for heartache and the related implications that she doesn’t trust Jane’s judgment naturally inflicts damage to their developing relationship. Maddie is more aggressive in questioning and investigating this time around, which yields additional suspects to consider. I enjoyed the spotlight being on Spike, Maddie’s cat, during this case. But this senior sleuthing pair steadily gets to the bottom of things, providing a surprising resolution.

I recommend CLAWS FOR CONCERN to readers of cozy mysteries, especially those who enjoy more mature sleuths and fans of the previous books.

Book Review: Death on Dickens Island (Books on the Beach Mystery, #1) by Allison Brook

Death on Dickens Island (The Books on the Beach Mysteries, #1)Death on Dickens Island by Allison Brook
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A solid mystery entwined with family drama and a surprising paranormal element.

Death on Dickens Island is the first book in author Allison Brook’s cozy new Books on the Beach Mystery series and is an absorbing mix of mystery and family drama, with a surprising paranormal element. With its multiple compelling storylines and relatable characters, this complex and satisfying tale had me firmly in its clutches from the very start.

Delia Dickens had returned to Dickens Island to help her father with the family general store and try to build a stronger relationship with Connor, the son who had grown up with her parents while she established her career in the city. Delia felt she had fumbled the ball with Connor, as her demanding job and early, ongoing difficulties finding safe childcare had prevented her from keeping him by her side. Her mother and father had been a godsend, stepping in when childcare had repeatedly failed and soon became the answer to providing a consistent and nurturing environment while Delia earned them a living. Connor, now fifteen, was having a hard time forgiving, forgetting, and just adjusting to living with his mother full-time again.

Delia and Connor were not the only ones experiencing family drama on Dickens Island. When Delia decided to move back home and into the house left to her by her grandmother, her mother took the opportunity to move into Delia’s Manhattan apartment for a little “Me” self-care time away from her husband and the island community that soon stretched into months, with no firm end date in sight. Additionally, her Uncle Brad and Aunt Reenie, an island councilman and the town manager, were publicly at odds with each other over town council business and the unusually keen attentions of a flirtatious single councilwoman. But when the problem councilwoman is found murdered in her home, the stakes get even higher as both Brad and Reenie suddenly become suspects in her death.

Delia has her hands full trying to reconnect with her teenage son as a full-time mom, and I didn’t envy her the task of mollifying her dad with his constant requests that she convince her aunt and uncle to reconcile. Awkward. I was glad she was able to fulfill his request without aggressively meddling in something she was aware was none of her business. She had her own struggles, including the reappearance of her old high school sweetheart in her life.

The plot is complex, to say the least, with multiple storylines, all clamoring for attention. The author does a stellar job establishing each one and entwining them so well. There’s a friendly stray dog who comes into their life at just the right time, Connor’s treasure hunting dreams with his friend, Trevor, who has a bad reputation and a worse homelife rounding out the picture, and a hidden room in Delia’s house with an even more unexpected visitor: her dearly departed Grandmother Helena with questions of her own and, perhaps, the answers to long-held island secrets.

I liked how Delia finally stood up to her father about her purpose at the store, and he was able to see her side pretty quickly. Of course, her addition of a book nook to the general store was an attractive one to me. Delia is a thoughtful, contemplative woman, and she takes the time to analyze her feelings for Jack and the best approaches to take with her wayward family members. I enjoyed how the storylines converged, some leading to clues that solved several mysteries and to the resolution of both a decades-old disappearance and the present-day murder.

I recommend DEATH ON DICKENS ISLAND to cozy mystery readers, especially those who enjoy stories full of family drama, New York/Long Island-ish settings, and paranormal elements.

Book Review: Mrs. Christie at the Mystery Guild Library (Mrs. Christie, #1) by Amanda Chapman

Mrs. Christie at the Mystery Guild LibraryMrs. Christie at the Mystery Guild Library by Amanda Chapman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fun and unique new cozy mystery featuring the “Queen of Crime” returning from the beyond to solve a murder.

Mrs. Christie at the Mystery Guild Library by Amanda Chapman is the first book in a fun and unique new cozy murder mystery series featuring the “Queen of Crime” herself, apparently on something of a holiday from the Pearly Gates. As Mrs. Christie, book restoration specialist Tory Van Dyne, and Tory’s cousin and Broadway ingenue Nicola search for answers, Mrs. Christie’s formidable powers of observation and reasoning pave the way to the final resolution.

The book unfolds in the first-person perspective of Tory Van Dyne, and her narrative is both spirited and liberally laced with humor and numerous references to Agatha Christie and other mystery authors. For me, it was the perfect blending of character quotes from the many Christie novels and Tory’s thought-filled identification that I most enjoyed and had me mentally making a list of Christie titles to revisit in the future. I loved the New York City / Greenwich Village setting and the thought of a recreated Christie library in a private home and look forward to more stories there in the future.

I recommend MRS. CHRISTIE AT THE MYSTERY GUILD LIBRARY to cozy mystery fans, especially those with a soft spot for the work of the “Queen of Crime” herself.

Book Review: Rocky Road to Murder (Coffee & Cream Café Mystery, #6) by Lena Gregory

Rocky Road to Murder (Coffee & Cream Café Mysteries, #6)Rocky Road to Murder by Lena Gregory
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Who is trying to frame Dani for the death of one of her customers?

Rocky Road to Murder is the sixth book in veteran author Lena Gregory's consistently delightful Coffee & Cream Café Mystery series, featuring café owner and barista Dani Delaney and her tight-knit circle of friends, as well as the murder of a local woman during her annual Fourth of July soiree. Dani is elated when Cressida Rutherford hires her to provide parfait desserts for her upcoming Fourth of July dinner, not only for the business but also because she has always wanted to attend the prestigious event. However, success takes a turn for the worse when the hostess is discovered dead during the festivities with one of Dani's parfaits on the ground beside her.

This latest adventure is another delightful addition to the cozy mystery series and is somewhat unique for the genre, particularly in how the victim is introduced and the subsequent amateur investigation is conducted. While the victims in many cozy mysteries are unlikable, nasty individuals or otherwise apt targets for the fictional murder, Cressida Rutherford is a relative unknown to the reading audience, never appearing alive in the story or directly introduced to readers prior to the discovery of her corpse. Her death is handled more like a homicide in a more traditional mystery or police procedural, where the story starts with the discovery of a body, and the victim's identity is established after the fact, with the detectives building a picture of the victim as they conduct their investigation. Dani and her fellow amateur sleuths jump straight to unraveling the clues to the murderer's identity in order to clear Dani's name. While a little information about Cressida's life emerges, the case is clearly focused on the clues and disproving Dani's and Eli's possible involvement in her death. It's a fine and interesting mix of mystery subgenres, and it really worked for me. Like Dani and her friends, I was kept guessing the entire time.

With its cast of regulars, well-paced murder investigation, and romantic storyline, I recommend ROCKY ROAD TO MURDER to cozy mystery readers.

Book Review: A Pawsome Summer for Murder (Samantha Davies Mystery, #7) by S.A. Kazlo

A Pawsome Summer For Murder (Samantha Davies Mystery)A Pawsome Summer For Murder by S.A. Kazlo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A murder during a charity fishing tournament nets a number of suspects.

A Pawsome Summer for Murder is the seventh book in author S.A. Kazlo’s fun, cozy mystery series featuring Samantha Davies, her friends, family, and pet dachshund, Porkchop. While participating in a charity fishing tournament to benefit the local animal shelter, Sam hooks a big one. However, what she reels in is the body of a local woman who had been protesting the catch-and-release event, advocating on behalf of the fish. With the unique discovery of the victim’s body and quirky characters, many of whom become possible suspects in the woman’s murder, even readers new to the series will be able to follow the story and enjoy the mystery.

The main character is divorcee Samantha Davies, who is now engaged to the town of Wings Falls, New York, lead police detective Hank Johnson, which is convenient since she has frequently been involved in several recent murder investigations. Sam is sweet and determined to help get to the truth behind Luna Wheeler’s death. She is assisted by her cousin Candie and dachshund sidekick, Porkchop. The story was an entertaining and quick mystery, perfect for a laid-back evening with a book.

I recommend A PAWSOME SUMMER FOR MURDER to cozy mystery enthusiasts and dachshund lovers.

Book Review: Murder on Oak Street (South Side Mystery, #1) by I.M. Foster

Murder on Oak StreetMurder on Oak Street by I.M. Foster
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

At a possibly intimidating 500 pages in length, Murder on Oak Street proves to be an absorbing and entertaining historical mystery story that is not to be overlooked.

Murder on Oak Street is the first book in author I.M. Foster’s historical South Side Mystery series, and despite its healthy length of a smidge over 500 pages, it was an intriguing, entertaining, and absorbing reading experience. After being left at the altar, Dr. Daniel O’Halleran, one of New York City’s busy coroner’s physicians, decides a change of scenery is in order and takes a job in the small Long Island community of Patchogue, assisting the local coroner. Rather than peace and quiet, Danny is thrust back into investigating a cold case murder – the very case with which he started his career in NYC two years earlier and felt never received the attention it deserved.

Danny is a charming, engaging character with a hidden childhood secret. Adopted by the wealthy Adams family, he grew up in comfort and luxury but with a burning desire to get justice for the victims he investigates.

The plot progresses steadily as O’Halleran settles into his first job in New York City, eventually making the move to Patchogue on Long Island. The author’s writing and storytelling abilities drew me into the story immediately with vivid characterizations and descriptions of the early 1900s time period and I was hooked until the final page. There were a lot of twists and turns and plenty of suspects to rule out on the way to the story’s conclusion, keeping me on my toes and definitely on the edge of my seat for the duration.

I recommend MURDER ON OAK STREET to historical mystery readers.

New York, 1904. After two years as a coroner’s physician for the city of New York, Daniel O'Halleran is more frustrated than ever. What’s the point when the authorities consistently brush aside his findings for the sake of expediency? So when his fiancée leaves him standing at the altar on their wedding day, he takes it as a sign that it's time to move on and eagerly accepts an offer to assist the local coroner in the small Long Island village of Patchogue.

Though the coroner advises him that life on Long Island is far more subdued than that of the city, Daniel hasn’t been there a month when the pretty librarian, Kathleen Brissedon, asks him to look into a two-year-old murder case that took place in the city. Oddly enough, the case she’s referring to was the first one he ever worked on, and the verdict never sat right with him.

Eager for the chance to investigate it anew, Daniel agrees to look into it in his spare time, but when a fresh murder occurs in his own backyard, he can’t shake his gut feeling that the two cases are connected. Can he discover the link before another life is taken, or will murder shake the peaceful South Shore village once again?

About I. M. Foster

I. M. Foster is the pen name author Inez Foster uses to write her South Shore Mystery series, set on Edwardian Long Island. Inez also writes historical romances under the pseudonym Andrea Matthews, and has so far published two series in that genre: the Thunder on the Moor series, a time-travel romance set on the 16th century Anglo-Scottish Borders, and the Cross of Ciaran series, which follows the adventures of a fifth century Celt who finds himself in love with a twentieth-century archaeologist.

Inez is a historian and librarian, who love to read and write and search around for her roots, genealogically speaking. She has a BA in History and an MLS in Library Science and enjoys the research almost as much as she does writing the story. In fact, many of her ideas come to her while doing casual research or digging into her family history. Inez is a member of the Long Island Romance Writers, the Historical Novel Society, and Sisters in Crime.

On top of all that, just as the day was ending, her boyfriend Karl had called to break up with her, because it was her birthday.

“So, was that the annual breakup call?” Angela asked, turning to her with a smile that would have been more fitting on a hyena than a human.

Angela was one of the other paralegals in the office. She had mouse-blonde hair, a large beak nose, and a grovelling, subservient manner anytime an attorney or partner was around. Around other administrative staff, she was all smiles and sweetness, until you found the knife in your back. Then she would look at you with a condescending smirk that said You mean you weren’t smart enough to see that coming? Angela may have looked like a mouse, but she was actually more like a trapdoor spider. She was an ambush predator. Sarah had had the good fortune of sitting in the cubicle just next to hers for the past five years.  At the moment, Angela was faking sympathy during what was actually a probe for weaknesses.

She needs to probe? asked the voice of Sarah’s mother in her head. Sarah winced internally, as she always did when her mother’s voice spoke. Her mothers was one of the nastiest voices that inhabited her head.”

REVIEW:

5 stars!

Dark, shocking, and exciting debut for the Limerent series!

Caio is the first book in author L.S. Delorme’s Limerent dark fantasy series and really sets the tone, pace, and a high bar for what’s to come in the following novels. With its engaging, sympathetic main character and compelling plot, I was completely drawn into the protagonist’s life and couldn’t look away if I wanted.

Sarah Baker is the main character and is a paralegal by trade, though a fully qualified attorney before the story even starts. Hers is a tale of a depressing, downtrodden life, the result of the abuse of those who should have had her best interests at heart and known better. She is a doormat, and her gradual growth after Caio enters her life is ultimately a story of redemption and success. However, there are several tough topics encountered along the way that readers sensitive to these issues should be aware of.

The author’s writing is compelling and so easy to read, and I was absorbed by this story and this very realistic heroine. The supernatural and magical elements were creative and elevated Sarah’s tale to one that was even more special and unpredictable. The scene descriptions were vivid, and I could practically see the action unfolding as I read. I am still somewhat surprised by how I sank into this story, and time passed by without me realizing how long I’d been reading before I needed to take a break. Of course, I must read the next in the series as soon as I can!

I recommend CAIO to readers of dark fantasy and tales of the paranormal.

About The Socialite's Guide to Sleuthing and Secrets

Hotel heiress Evelyn Murphy is on the hunt for a cunning killer and a mysterious thief in the third Pinnacle Hotel mystery, perfect for fans of Rhys Bowen and Ashley Weaver.

New York, 1958. When Evelyn’s mail is delivered during a luncheon in the Gold Room, she’s surprised to find she has received a diamond tiara, which catches the attention of a costume jewelry sales team lunching nearby. Their leader, Lois Mitchel, is especially interested, but by the end of the lunch, Lois has choked and fallen into Evelyn’s lap—and by the end of the day, she’s dead.

The papers report on the death the next day, while also spreading news of a Gentleman Thief who’s been leaving behind a red pocket square after robbing the city’s wealthiest. Determined to figure out what happened to Lois, Evelyn devotes herself to the investigation.

The truth is as rare as a diamond and just as hard to crack, and Evelyn swiftly discovers that this particular mystery is multifaceted, too. From costume jewelry hawkers to wannabe Robin Hoods and a detective in residence at the Pinnacle, nothing is simple. But neither is Evelyn—and this case is hers to solve.

Ready for another stay at the Pinnacle Hotel?

The Socialite’s Guide to Sleuthing and Secrets is the third novel in author S.K. Golden’s nostalgic, fun, and frothy Pinnacle Hotel Mysteries and is an excellent addition to the series. Engaging characters, a suspected murder, and a jewel thief, all combine for a comfortable and entertaining story.

The main character is Evelyn Murphy, the daughter of the wealthy owner of the Pinnacle Hotel, who lives onsite and fulfills the role of party planner for the company. With two successful investigations under her belt, Evelyn is more than ready to take on this latest case of murder mistaken as an accidental death. With each book, this sweet amateur detective grows a little bit more as she learns to cope with her ongoing agoraphobia, finding her place and expanding her life beyond the mental and physical confines of the hotel. In this story, Evelyn also deals with the absence of her former boyfriend and sleuthing sidekick, Mac. However, she is joined by a great group of secondary characters, including her new personal assistant, Poppy, her good friend and Hollywood star, Henry Fox, and the former city police detective, Hodgson, who now works for the hotel as well.

The mystery kicks off early with the sudden demise of a lunch guest in the first couple of pages, and the action never lets up as Evelyn finds evidence that the death was no accident. As always, the 1950s timeframe is fun and nostalgic, and the posh hotel is a glorious setting. In addition to the murder, a notorious jewel thief is targeting the Pinnacle’s guests. The author provides suspects and clues for the sharp-eyed and sharp-witted armchair detective to note on their way to the climactic resolution.

While this is the third book in the Pinnacle Hotel saga, it stands well enough on its own to entertain readers new to the series. I recommend THE SOCIALITE’S GUIDE TO SLEUTHING AND SECRETS to readers who enjoy cozy historical mysteries.

Review

5 stars!

When a blackmailing TikToker meets an untimely demise in the snow, Dani Delaney is unexpectedly involved in another murder investigation.

Soft Serve Sleighing is the fifth fun entry in author Lena Gregory’s outstanding, cozy Coffee & Cream Café Mysteries, and, once again, Dani Delaney finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. With its comfortable, familiar Long Island setting and its likable recurring cast of characters, I was quickly drawn into the latest story of murder and intrigue in the little town of Watchogue.

Dani is the series’s main character and the owner and operator of the local ice cream and coffee café, having taken the business over from her Uncle Jimmie. Now, in the dead of winter, the addition of coffee and pastries to the former “ice cream only” parlor’s offerings is starting to pay off with a clientele of regulars from the local population when a blizzard hits the town and shuts everything down. When three young women appear at the closed café, Dani feels obligated to open up just for them, even after their leader, Brynleigh Star, a TikTok influencer, unjustly bashes the local B&B where they are staying. The three proceed to order numerous items from the menu and demand tastes of all the specialty ice cream dishes, then insinuate they’ll only post a 5-star review of the café if Dani subscribes to one of their outrageously expensive memberships. When Dani fails to take the bait, they walk their check. The next day, when Dani finds the instigator dead in the snow near the B&B on the town’s favorite hill for sledding, she begins to look like suspect number one!

The plot progresses swiftly from setup to the discovery of the murder, and I didn’t want to put the book down at all as the fun amateurs followed their instincts. I appreciated how Dani has to walk a fine line between definitively clearing her name and staying on the right side of her police detective boyfriend, Jake Barlow, who wants her as far away from the case as possible. However, it was fun watching Dani, Gwen, and Eli dance around the rules and work through the clues they had, many of which had fallen into their laps via some other very talkative suspects. After four previous books in this fun series, I really felt like I knew these characters. There are some good suspects, with everyone having a bone to pick with the very unlikable victim, but the truth isn’t too obvious. It was an entertaining story all the way to the final reveal.

I recommend SOFT SERVE SLEIGHING to cozy mystery readers, especially fans of the previous books in the series.
