Book Review: The Mysterious Case of the Missing House (Redemption Detective Agency Mystery, #4) by Michele Pariza Wacek

The Mysterious Case of the Missing House (The Redemption Detective Agency Book 4)The Mysterious Case of the Missing House by Michele Pariza Wacek
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How can an entire house go missing?

The Mysterious Case of the Missing House is the fourth book in author Michele Pariza Wacek’s wild and wacky Redemption Detective Agency Mystery series, and this time Emily, Aunt Tilde, and her friends are tasked with locating a house that’s gone AWOL. A local woman who won big in the lottery returns home to Redemption, Wisconsin, when the niece who was housesitting for her as she traveled the world stops responding to her phone calls. But once she’s back in town, she discovers that not only is her house gone, now the site of the country club’s new tennis courts, but the niece hasn’t been seen by her family in over a year! She hires the Redemption Detective Agency to get to the bottom of things and bring her niece back home.

Emily has her work cut out for her on this bizarre case and must do some soul-searching as she contemplates leaving the agency for a “real” job with the school district, working with her boyfriend Jerome. However, she has to decide if returning to the work life she had before is actually what she wants for her future.

The plot moves at a fast pace as Emily, Aunt Tilde, and Mildred unravel the clues around Meli Clark’s missing house, which the other ladies seem to think smacks of alien abduction and other bizarre possibilities. They enlist the services of their favorite attorney, Nick Stewart, and the chemistry between him and Emily sparks, even as he tries to avoid direct eye contact and conversation with her. Still, they make a great team as they investigate what happened to Meli’s niece, Brandy. As things begin to fall into place, Nick’s contact at the Redemption Police Department, Officer Brandon Wyle, and a crossover character from the author’s Charlie Kingsley series joins the case. Together, they tease out the truth about what happened in a dramatic and shocking final reveal.

I recommend THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF THE MISSING HOUSE to readers who enjoy humorous and paranormal cozy mysteries.

Children's Book Review - Stand Up!: A Graphic Novel by Tori Sharp

Stand Up!: A Graphic NovelStand Up!: A Graphic Novel by Tori Sharp
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A fun middle-grade graphic novel about stepping outside your comfort zone and having the courage to try something new!

Stand Up! by Tori Sharp is a fun middle-grade graphic novel featuring best friends Clay and Kyle and how they team up to develop a successful podcast using the natural strengths they’ve recognized they have growing up with ADHD and autism. The two eighth-grade protagonists capitalize on what many might see as stumbling blocks to reaching their dreams.

I enjoyed getting to know Clay, Kyle, and their friends from the Greenlake Middle School Drama Club as they prepare to mount the final show, a musical called “Gals and Dolls,” of their middle-school years. However, both Clay and Kyle have always worked backstage, and this time, they want to audition for acting roles. After the experience of their audition, Clay decides to stay the course and act; Kyle isn’t feeling it and opts to stage manage, a role at which he both excels and is comfortable. Making the switch to performer proves unexpectedly difficult for Clay, though, as her ADHD doesn’t pair well with the seemingly endless repetition and the hurry-up-and-wait nature of rehearsals. Dania, another classmate making her first appearance on stage playing the lead female role, faces struggles of her own with slowly increasing stage fright. Clay’s immediate crush on Dania is sweet and entertaining when her attraction makes her tongue-tied and verbally awkward around the other girl. Suddenly shy, she is unable to talk to Dania about her feelings. However, Dania’s collaboration on Clay and Kyle’s brilliantly funny podcast, “Passing Notes,” paves the way for the two to get closer. The story has a spectacular HEA for everyone.

An interesting aspect of the story is gender identity and non-traditional families. While the main characters are named Clay and Kyle, typically male names, it is left ambiguous in both the narrative (for quite a while) and the illustrations as to whether they are actually males or females. Frankly, and this may be the point, it doesn’t matter to the trajectory of the story. The plot would work in the same fashion with any gender configuration. Also, Clay, Kyle, and their respective moms all live together in a single apartment on the second floor of an older home, where the first floor has been converted into a coffee shop/bakery. The relationship between the moms is never addressed or revealed, and readers are left to establish that themselves. They could be friends sharing the space, each with their one child, or they could be a couple. What we DO know is that they are both committed parents, and the four of them get along very happily. Once again, their status doesn’t affect the trajectory of the plot. They and their friend Lettie, the owner of the bakery, have an enviable and long-held friendship, but it is unclear whether Lettie lives above the bakery as well.

The story moves quickly, going from the end of one middle-grade musical into preparation for the next: Clay developing her crush on Dania, creating the podcast, and including Dania in the podcast production. The artwork, while more modern, reminded me somewhat of the Archie comic books of my childhood, while the storyline is much more robust than anything from that era. I enjoyed the clever feminine twists to the names or titles of everything imaginable throughout the story. Well done!

I recommend STAND UP! to middle-grade readers who enjoy graphic novels, especially those looking for reps of ADHD, autism, and LGBTQ main characters.

Book Review: The Last Train Out of Hell by Julie Price Carpenter

The Last Train Out of HellThe Last Train Out of Hell by Julie Price Carpenter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An atmospheric setting, engaging characters, fun dialogue, and a puzzling mystery combine to create an entertaining and memorable story.

When a distracted Liz Martin stepped off a curb into the path of a bus, she never expected to find herself on a one-way train trip to Hell, but there she was. And Hell wasn’t at all what she had been led to envision; it was more of an overcrowded, soot-showered, demon-infested version of “Up Top,” all run by the overwhelmed, under-budgeted Manager of Hell named Brian.

Readers are thrust immediately into the confusion and chaos of the setting as the latest train disgorges Hell’s newest arrivals to the afterlife at Perdition City Station. The freshly disembodied are met with the nightmare of Hell’s woefully inadequate infrastructure and rigid, red-tape-ridden governmental bureaucracy comprised of endless queues and stacks of incomprehensible forms, where the smallest mistake sends the bearer to the back of the line. I love the full spectrum of creatures found there (ranked demons, devils, succubi, etc.) and their demonic names, as well as the inclusion of biblically well-known figures such as Beelzebub and Lilith, and the well-known adjacent entities like “Sam” Azrael. The cute yet hellish business and brand names were also fun (i.e., Dante’s CafĂ©, Taco Torchiere, and Ghoulies breakfast cereal).

A rule-follower by nature, Liz passively accepts her adjudication to Hell but lies awake nights searching her memories of her past for just cause and still coming up clueless. She shares her eternal life in damnation with a personally assigned demon, a catlike creature named Dennis, who upchucks or otherwise evacuates everything he ingests onto her shoes, bed, or underwear drawer. Joining her in perdition (and Perdition City) are two other recent arrivals and neighbors in her apartment building, Ellie and Theo, along with their own tiny tormentors, the little dragon, Greg, who sleeps a good 20 hours per day, and Theo’s troublesome companion, Alberta, a manic marmoset. They, too, are genuinely puzzled that their former lives merited their current situation, and together they question the more Purgatory-like nature of their existence in Perdition City. Their confusion is accompanied by the mystery of the boarded-up ticket counters at Perdition City Station, and the appearance that it wasn’t always the terminus of this Stygian railway.

On her arrival in Hell, an accidental meeting with the Manager of Hell and a sympathetic comment garners Liz, a former librarian in life, the least coveted position of Brian’s administrative assistant. However, their shared struggles to control the chaos lead to a slow-burn attraction between the two, which was a delight to watch and raised the stakes in Liz’s and her friend’s covert investigation into the history of Hell, the railway, and Satan’s contractual responsibilities. With the implied additional train routes from the station, maybe Perdition City isn’t the final destination for everyone.

With its vivid, atmospheric setting, well-drawn, engaging, and sympathetic characters, sparkling dialogue, and hopeful ramifications of the mystery of the train, I recommend THE LAST TRAIN OUT OF HELL to readers of humorous fiction and mystery.

Book Review: The Decoy Girlfriend by Lillie Vale

The Decoy GirlfriendThe Decoy Girlfriend by Lillie Vale
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Delightfully fun and fresh!

The Decoy Girlfriend by Lillie Vale is a delightful romantic comedy featuring celebrity impersonation and a fake-dating scenario. This story had me smiling so much of the time. The premise got me from the start, and the author delivered just like she said she would.

Freya Lal’s follow-up novel to her successful debut book is due imminently, but with her inspiration level at zero, she’s nearing despair over honoring her commitment. Agonizing over her dilemma and staring at a blank laptop screen while watching her aunt’s bookstore, she’s even more distracted by the movie being shot on the street outside their doors that features a famous actress for whom Freya is frequently mistaken. While Freya has taken advantage of her physical similarity to Mandi Roy for small perks in the past, the idea of impersonating the hottest actress in town had never crossed her mind until Mandi’s co-star and Freya’s number one crush, Taft Bamber, walks through the bookstore doors.

I’m a sucker for the fake relationship story, true, but this one had a cool twist: one of the main characters is impersonating a celebrity. I also really enjoyed having the story told from the dual points of view of the two main characters and watching everything unfold from both angles.

Freya Lal was a delightful character. I liked her and felt bad about her agonizing problems trying to follow up on her early, early success with a new book – deadlines looming. Losing your mother is such a blow anyway, but when she is your main cheerleader, it would be particularly devastating.

Taft Bamber was hands-down charming and adorable. It was awful how he was treated by his “people.” It made me want to do some damage on his behalf. There are also several notable supporting characters.

I want to say that this is not a book for younger readers. There are very intimate scenes that are well done but not suitable for children.

I recommend THE DECOY GIRLFRIEND to romance readers who enjoy the fake dating/fake relationship plot, especially those featuring famous characters constantly in the spotlight, adding pressure to the situation.

Praise for Love & the Divorce Lawyer:

"From its slam-bang opening to its unexpected yet inevitable conclusion, Love and the Divorce Lawyer is a twisty, suspenseful, romantic legal thriller. Author Newhart’s legal background serves her well as she leads the reader through the fascinating strategies that high-end practitioners of family law employ to protect and reap the best possible benefits for their clients. But it is the mystery of who is sending increasingly ominous threats to Attorney Josie Jensen that drives the action of the novel. Filled with complex and genuine characters with understandable but conflicting motives, Newhart masterfully creates tension scene after scene. Attorney Jensen’s growing attraction to her opponent in an important divorce case unfolds naturally as she anticipates her crafty adversary's next move and what she must do to counter it, all the while finding herself drawn to him on a personal level. Superbly written and expertly plotted, Love and the Divorce Lawyer is a winner."
~ Brian Anderson, author of Yule Tide and the Lyle Dahms Mysteries

"Josie Jensen is back. Four years ago, a client's bullet shattered her pelvis and nearly ended her legal career. Now, against her better judgment, she's reluctantly agreed to represent Amy Castle, a woman entangled in a bitter financial battle with her ex-husband.
But the case isn't as simple as it seems. Josie's ongoing divorce is a constant reminder of the pain she's endured, and her physical limitations make the courtroom a challenging arena. To complicate matters, she's locked in a legal duel with Richard Diamond, a brilliant and undeniably attractive attorney.
Danger lurks around every corner as Josie digs deeper into the case. A near-miss on the road, a sinister floral delivery, and a persistent sense of being followed signal that her troubles are far from over.
Barbara Newhart has crafted a complex cast of characters and a captivating narrative that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is one for the keeper shelves. 5 out of 5 stars"

Read an excerpt:

Chapter One

Anne Compton, Almost Four Years Ago

Anne placed the empty gun carefully on the table, then folded her hands next to it. Moments earlier, to prevent the judge from granting their divorce, she fired it at her husband. She and Peter had shared such wonderful dreams of their lives together. But that was a long time ago—before he broke their vows. For that, there could be no forgiveness. And yet, he escaped his sentence.

All because of her interfering lawyer.

Anne peered down at the floor at Attorney Josephina Jensen, the woman she hired to prevent the divorce, and who had failed her. To add to her treachery, Jensen stepped in front of the bullets meant for Peter. Now, the divorce would go forward, thrusting Anne with him into eternal damnation for his sins.

In the hallway outside, footsteps pounded the marble floors. The courtroom's double doors burst open, shattering glass and splitting wood.

Anne met the panicked eyes of her former fiancé, followed by the first responders. She smiled as a single tear dropped to her cheek.

Chapter Two

Present Day, Josie Jensen, Thursday Afternoon

“Face it, Josephina Jensen. You’re a divorce lawyer.”

“No, brother dear,” the almost forty-one-year-old corrected as she twirled the stem of her wine glass on the bar. “I have a shattered pelvis and an assortment of scars from a couple bullet wounds to prove I was a divorce lawyer.” She held her cane up in the air. “I am now a law school professor.”

Reaching for his beer mug, Dan Jensen flashed his perfect bachelor-of-the-year grin. “I’ve got a great case for you. The divorce part is over. Judge Myers awarded the wife six million, plus a few million more in assets that are all in the husband’s name.”

“Let me guess,” Josie interrupted, concentrating on opening the package of oyster crackers that arrived with her fish chowder. “The husband refuses to authorize the transfers.”

“Correct. All you have to do is help the wife, now the ex-wife, collect.”

Out of patience, Josie yanked the cellophane hard, spewing the contents in all directions. “Oh, good grief.”

Dan swallowed a forkful of baked scrod and rice pilaf as she retrieved the crackers. “The couple has a chain of high-end grocery stores. They made a ton of money over the years. Plus, the stores are still operating.”

When Josie didn’t respond, he stilled her hand with his and gave it a squeeze. “You got this. You’re a bloodhound when it comes to cases like this. It’s easy money for you.”

She glowered at him over her gold-rimmed glasses. “I remember you flying around the house in superhero costumes.” She removed her hand. “Those gorgeous eyes and that infamous charm get you nowhere with me.”

Deadpan serious now, Dan leaned in close, speaking fast. “The wife is Amy Castle. She’s a cousin on my mom’s side. Two years ago, I referred her to Barry Woodward because you were still recovering from your injuries. Barry did a fantastic job on the divorce. Sadly, he also put the moves on Amy, and they had an affair.” Dan shook his head. “Really poor form. She learned over the weekend that he was married, and she fired him. So, would you please help her?”

Josie sat back and tackled one piece of information at a time. First, their family tree. She and Dan shared the same father but had different mothers. Yes, that could result in unknown cousins. Next, she considered the aforementioned lawyer. “Isn’t Barry on his third wife?”

Dan resumed eating. “The fourth. She knows about the affair too. It’s a disaster.”

Josie balanced a piece of salmon on her soup spoon. “So, I’d really be doing this for you, right? To help ease your guilt over referring a family member to a brilliant, sex-addicted lawyer with commitment issues?”

He tilted his head. “Well, yes. And for Amy, an innocent victim of love, taken advantage of by her now ex-husband and deceived by her lover.” When Josie didn’t respond, he added, “She’ll pay you a hundred thousand dollars, upfront, and you can bill her a c-note an hour. There’s plenty more after that if you need it.”

As if on automatic pilot, Josie’s mind started listing each step of the process needed to hang the ex-husband. Then the sane, less greedy side of her brain kicked in.

Stop. You don’t do that kind of work anymore.

Dan squeezed her hand again. “Please?”

Her resolve wavered. This not-so-humble, lawyer-of-the-year-type guy who just offered her a case other lawyers would beg for, was her life-long best friend and confidant. He also rarely said please. Twice. She pushed aside the chowder and swiveled in the bar stool to face him. “I hate you.”

His broad smile beamed. “You love me.” He picked up his cell. “Can I call her? She’s waiting in the parking lot to meet with you.”

Josie grabbed his hand. “I’m making no promises.”

“Agreed. Just speak with her.”

She scratched the scar on her chest. “Who’s representing the ex-husband?”

Dan’s cheeks and neck blotched red. “Oh yeah. About that.” He rose and tossed a bunch of bills on the bar.

Warning bells erupted in Josie’s brain. She grabbed the hem of his designer suit jacket. “Daniel Gabriel Jensen. Who is it?”

“Um, do you remember Richard Diamond?”

Chapter Three

Richard Diamond, Thursday Afternoon

“Mr. Castle is holding on line two.”

“Thank you, Dana.” Attorney Richard Diamond ended the intercom connection and drained a bottle of water.

Divorce caused even the most reasonable people to act unreasonably. And yet, Richard suspected his client, Malcolm Castle, displayed his “unique” form of unreasonableness long before his divorce commenced. To date, he held the record for the longest divorce case in the county, and the pandemic had nothing to do with the delay.

Richard didn’t need to review Castle’s file to recall the judge’s final decision when he granted the divorce. With millions of dollars up for grabs, Mr. Castle was ordered to transfer six of them in investments, plus a beach cottage, a boat, and a car, to his former wife within thirty days. And here they were, a hundred days or so later, and no transfers. Richard wondered if his client intended to break the record for this post judgment phase of the divorce as well.

Was Richard ruffled? Not at all. Malcolm already paid him close to two million in legal fees for the divorce. And he said he would commit to spending another two million for Richard to run circles around his ex-wife and her lawyer in order to hold on to his fortune until the last possible moment. And then, only then, would he direct Richard to make a deal. He was not going to pay anything close to six million and it was up to Richard to make sure of it.

Richard inhaled a deep breath and held it for five seconds. Then he released a slow exhale. It had been a long day, and it was about to get longer. After another second, he pushed the phone’s button for line two. “This is Attorney Diamond. How may I help you?”

“Hey there, Dickie Baby. It’s me, Mal. I hear Amy’s getting a new lawyer. A broad this time. She must have figured out, with some help, that this last one, who she was screwing, Wood something or other, was married. She gave him the boot Tuesday night.”

Richard never asked why or how his client always had up-to-date details about his ex-wife’s life. He didn’t want to know. Malcolm Castle may be slick, but more important, his skewed beliefs about how the world should operate, including his marriage and his divorce, created the type of no-holds-barred challenge that Richard relished.

And Malcolm, along with Richard’s other character-flawed clients, often expressed many prejudices, but they were not stupid. They ignored Richard’s dark skin because of the favorable results he produced. As for being Jewish, the topic never came up. Black Jews were not common in this country. Black Jewish lawyers of Ethiopian descent were even less common.

Richard gave his well-appointed office an appreciative glance. Mal wouldn’t pay his ex-wife, but he always paid his legal bills without question or delay. And the instant he didn’t, Richard would fire him.

“What’s the lawyer’s name?” he asked, disappointed that Barry Woodward couldn’t keep his pants zipped, or at least avoid getting caught.

There were few other lawyers left in the state who could handle a case of this magnitude. Like him, they treated the law as a game. The goal was to define the rules in each case, then be the best at figuring out how to enforce them or bend them. Which strategy depended on whose side you were on and how much money your client was willing to pay you.

“Some fat bimbo named Josephina Jensen,” Castle answered. “I already checked her out. She teaches at the damned law school. She quit going to court a couple years ago after her wacko client, the wife, mind you, got a gun into the courthouse. Jensen tried to stop her from shooting it off and she got hit pretty bad. If she represents Amy, it will be her first time back in court, in the same building. With all that emotional garbage and you in my corner, I doubt she’ll last a week. What do you think?”

Castle kept talking as Richard’s memory replayed the nightmarish scenes that came to be known as the Compton Catastrophe around Hartford’s Hall of Justice. He’d been down the hall when he heard the shots.

“Hey, Dickie, answer my question,” Castle demanded, drawing Richard back to the present.

Richard typed Jensen’s name into the attorney directory located on the state’s judicial website, confirming what he already suspected. “You’ve got nothing to worry about, Malcolm.” He noted the calendar hanging on the wall and changed topics. “Are you all set for next Thursday?”

“You mean when I become unavailable?”

Richard cleared his throat. “Court starts at ten. It is my obligation to tell you to be there and on time.”

“Consider me told. Just be sure to cover my ass at all costs.”

“Consider your ass covered, Malcolm.” Richard hung up and jotted down the time spent during the call and its content. Next, he returned his attention to Josephina Jensen.

Holding his chin between his forefinger and thumb, he leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. He recalled her body, wrapped in a white sheet and packed onto a gurney with an oxygen mask covering her nose and mouth. Two silent paramedics, ignoring the media’s flashing cameras and shouted questions, wheeled the stretcher out of the courthouse and down the ramp near the steps. They lifted her into the waiting ambulance and raced off, lights and sirens blaring at full blast.

The image, along with one other, never left Richard’s mind. Over time, they had faded, but now they reemerged fresh as the day they happened.

Could Castle be right? Was she back?

Chapter Four

Josie

“Sit back down,” Josie insisted, tugging at Dan’s jacket.

The waiter returned just as her brother reclaimed his bar stool, interrupting the rant Josie was about to launch. “Shall I wrap your meal, madam?”

She looked at her barely eaten chowder and sandwich. “Do you want it?” she asked Dan.

He crinkled his nose. “After you played with it for the past half hour? No thanks.”

When the waiter left, Josie reduced her voice to a near-threatening level. “Richard Diamond is a monster, Daniel. Thirteen years ago, he roasted us alive in that Masterson case. Do you remember what happened when the judge read his decision, after that awful eight-day trial? Our client burst out of the courtroom and howled through the halls like a mama orangutang searching for her missing babies. And what did Diamond do? He stood there in his thousand-dollar suit, preening like a peacock, his feathers spread in full bloom.”

Straight faced, Dan pretended to study the dessert menu. “It’s not that we lost. The judge just didn’t give our client everything she wanted, the way she wanted it. Over time, the parents settled down and worked things out. And keep in mind, the playing field between you and Diamond is even now. You can take him. In fact, consider it your opportunity for payback.”

“We lost, Daniel,” Josie spat back. “And I don’t want payback. I haven’t handled a divorce case or any case for almost four years, and I don’t want to, ever again.” She hated that her voice started to crack mid-sentence.

Dan clutched her forearm and sought her tear-filled eyes. “Stop letting Anne Compton ruin your life. You’re an amazing lawyer and Amy needs you.”

Josie darted her attention to the nautical paraphernalia covering the bar’s walls. Even if he was right, she didn’t want to do it. “I doubt very much Richard Diamond has mellowed over the years. He’s like a clump of Roquefort cheese, its blue and green moldy disgustingness growing more and more pungent over time.”

Dan laughed. “That just makes it more challenging.”

Picturing Diamond in his element, Josie curled her upper lip. “He only represents wealthy, evil, greedy husbands and vengeful, spoiled, gold-digging wives. Their divorce proceedings last for years and always end with a trial. And for the rare times he loses, he files an appeal. There’s no end.”

“I agree.” He hugged her. “That’s why Amy’s divorce took so long.”

“And you want me to join that circus?”

He showed her his calendar on his phone. “Did I mention the contempt hearing against the ex-husband is scheduled for next Thursday?”

Josie straightened. “Are you listening to me at all? You act like we’re discussing a sale on one of your fancy suits.” She tapped her watch. “Luke and I are leaving for the Bahamas at eleven-fifty tonight. It’s his birthday present to me. We won’t be back until late Monday night.”

Dan’s grin and his eyes widened. “Then you’d better get started.”

Before she could stop him, he sent a text.

“I’m not doing it, Dan. I’m not stepping one foot into any courtroom with that fiend.”

Ignoring her, he stood and drained his beer mug. “You’re gonna love Amy.”

“I’m only agreeing to talk with her, Daniel.”

He waved. “There she is.”

Josie followed his gaze to the bar’s entrance.

A pretty, well-endowed and well-dressed older brunette stood in the doorway. With a worried smile, she waved back.

Perfect. Just perfect.

Review:

5 stars!

Clever plot, engaging characters, and a heck of an entertaining tale!

Love and the Divorce Lawyer is a new legal thriller by author Barbara Newhart and with its clever plot full of devious twists and turns and engaging and vulnerable characters, it is one heck of an entertaining tale. It's been four years since divorce lawyer Josephina Jensen appeared in a courtroom, which was when she was shot multiple times by her own client. Now, as a favor to her brother, Josie takes on a problematic case to compel a woman's stubborn ex-husband to comply with the court's orders for their divorce settlement. Unfortunately, the man's attorney is Richard Diamond, an old rival who handed her a most humiliating defeat years earlier and one of the best in the business. Reluctant to return to the work and place of her injuries, Josie also discovers her husband, one of the medics who rushed to save her life that awful day, is now cheating on her.

Josie's past is tragic, but she persevered, healed, and built a new life as a law professor with her new husband. It was achingly sad when Luke's infidelity was revealed to her in such a spectacularly hurtful manner. The clients who come her way, too, have their own stories of betrayal and loss of love and shared futures. I liked how Josie's unusual and supportive family, her faith, and her synagogue work helped sustain her through her hard times.

Opposing counsel Richard Diamond is a complex and driven man. Coming from a hard childhood, he's determined to create the most successful and lucrative practice possible. His clients come from the wealthiest sector of society, where failure is not an option, so many of his strategies seemed downright cold. Many of his clients are calculating jerks, bordering on unhinged. Unknown to most of his acquaintances, Rich is also Jewish and is a new member at the same synagogue as Josie.

The plot is deceivingly clever, with twists and turns at every corner. There are attacks and dirty tricks aimed at Josie that could have come from more than one possible suspect; trying to intimidate her from acting on more than one possible case had me on the edge of my seat, and Luke's deplorable behavior and text messages had me seething on Josie's behalf. And then there was the mysterious reappearance of the former client to puzzle out. I could not stop reading this book and finished it in just one evening, staying up late with zero regrets. This is perhaps one of the best books I've read this year.

I recommend LOVE AND THE DIVORCE LAWYER to readers of legal thrillers who enjoy twisty, turny plots, strong female protagonists, and slow-burn romantic attractions between characters.

Book Review: Left (Terran Incognita, #1) by Paul McGrath

Left (Terran Incognita Series)Left by Paul McGrath
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Delightful, with unexpectedly perfect plot twists.

Left is the first book in author Paul McGrath’s new science fiction series, Terran Incognita, and features an extraterrestrial embedded among the population of the small town of Eudora, Mississippi, to observe Earth’s inhabitants and who is left behind when he is delayed getting to his team’s extraction point. His unplanned extended stay is fun but telling of the current social environment, and while dark at times, it makes for entertaining and compelling reading from start to finish.

Anton-7, or Roy McDonald (his Earth alias), provides fine observations of the human condition from an outsider’s (FAR outsider’s) point of view as he gets increasingly closer and more involved with his unaware human hosts. Against all protocol, Anton goes “native.” I thoroughly enjoyed his “smooth” attempts to fit in and be a good guest. His internal monologue about his encounters is, at times, uneasy but always clever and hopeful that he’s responding appropriately, especially when engaging with Ezra and Ellie.

The story is well-paced as the events of his unplanned unfold, including a fun tour of Memphis, Tennessee’s points of interest. American society and popular opinions are examined and evaluated through his third-party, alien lens, and when circumstances reveal to him gaping discrepancies, such as nationwide gun availability, Anton decides to take action that will definitely rub with enthusiasts. Anton plays fast and loose with what many fans of the genre will understand as “the Prime Directive,” but, luckily, with positive outcomes. The author has a wonderful sense of dialogue and a knack for banter. It was a lot of fun to watch the growing relationship between Anton/Roy and Ellie Atkinson. The plot takes some delightful left turns that are so perfect and unexpected that I am still smiling about them.

I recommend LEFT to readers of humorous and satirical science fiction.

SYNOPSIS

Wyatt W. Sallow, MBA—poet, business ethics professor, and coach of the 8th ranked collegiate chess team in East Texas—travels to the heart of northern England to trace his family origins in mundane Sallowsfield, only to find his supposed ancestry a mirage. He does have a real past, however: one that stalks him across the green hillsides in echoes of his catastrophic marriage, the lingering shadow of a lost child, and—there, in person, inexplicably emerging from the town’s faux-Victorian train station—“X,” the enigmatic object of his unrequited passion and a figure as perplexing as an algebraic variable.

On his eight-day tour/pilgrimage/mock epic journey, Wyatt pursues the specter of his lost love and crosses paths with the citizens of this down-at-its-heels market town as they struggle to grasp the all-consuming obsessions, ghosts, and X-factors that confound their days.

Thought-provoking yet dryly humorous, Sallowsfield weaves diverse elements into a story both light-hearted and philosophical, exploring along the way universal human touchstones of obsession, ruined love, and the inexplicable mysteries that shape our lives.

SYNOPSIS:

The Lesser Known Travel Tips memoirs are a hilarious series of travel misadventures and dubious personal introspection by Australian author Simon Yeats, who from an early age learned that the best way to approach the misfortunes of this world is to laugh about them.

Simon shares his comedic insights into the unusual and uproarious elements of living life as an Aussie ex-pat and having a sense of Wanderlust as pervasive as the Spanish Flu in 1918 or hordes of Mongols in 12th Century.

From how to keep yourself entertained when unwittingly forced to watch 11 hours of live sumo wrestling in Japan, to surviving heartbreak in India at the hands of a French flight attendant, to 48 hours spent in Nepal that qualify as the funniest most gut-wrenching travel experience since Captain Bligh was set adrift in the Pacific, to his unsuccessful attempts at avoiding going to a brothel in Thailand. From what to do when several people converge to rob you after midnight on a deserted Copacabana Beach, to how to save the Sierra Mountain Range from a wildfire outbreak due to a lack of quality toilet paper, to where not to go in Tijuana when trying to locate the origins to stories of the city’s mythical adult entertainment, to how to save yourself from drowning when caught in a storm while sailing off the California coast. From how to outwit the Italian police while trying to find parking in downtown Genoa, to how to negotiate exploring the Roman ruins of Plovdiv, Bulgaria while on crutches, to how to impress the German Mafia with 80s dance moves, to how to leave a lasting impression on a crowded bar in Gothenburg, Sweden after combining alcohol and antibiotics.

Simon Yeats has gone into the world and experienced all the out of the ordinary moments for you to sit back and enjoy the experience without the need to break a leg, contract Dengue fever, or rupture a pancreas.

Excerpt from How to Start a Riot in a Brothel in Thailand by Ordering a Beer and Other Lesser Known Travel Tips -

My family’s most cherished vacation when we were all kids was a trip we took to the South Island of New Zealand in the southern hemisphere Autumn of 1980. All our relatives live on the north island where my mum and dad both grew up on dairy farms. So, we had already made a trip or two to Auckland in my young life. My parents had emigrated to live in the tropical heat and brutal humidity of the northeast of Australia before any of us kids were born and given a choice in the matter.

There are four of us in my family. An elder brother, an older sister, me, and a younger sister. Each of us is quite different in our personality and our interests. My older sister is the athlete. My younger sister is the diplomat. My brother is the brainiac. Me? Well, I tend to just sit back and let my siblings be in the limelight.

You can imagine me as being the little kid running around in the playground under a mop of red hair being extra polite with all the other kids and no one teasing me at all for having red hair. Something close to that.

But among me and my siblings, none of us ever stole a car and took off for a joy ride. None of us have ever been arrested by undercover police for trying to sell them synthetic crack cocaine we had cooked up in the basement. None of us ever got in trouble for mislabeling someone by using the wrong pronoun. I mean, sure, I once got in trouble for calling my headmaster the C-word, but, other than that small blemish on my record, I considered myself an exemplary student. Our mum and dad were amazing parents to raise us all so well.

We were a very content family growing up in the 70’s and 80’s while living in the sweltering pizza oven, otherwise known as North Queensland. What about central air conditioning? Oh, how entitled and twenty-first century of you to ask. Rubbing an ice cube across the forehead and asking my younger sister to blow against it. Does that count? Central air conditioning? No. There was none. Just like there was extraordinarily little to do in my hometown. Watching paint dry as a kid living in Townsville brought out the same level of unbridled fascination that I now see with adults viewing porn.

The reasoning behind there being nothing to do is obvious. It is not safe to do anything where I lived. Australian country towns are just holding pens for human beings surrounded by a natural species menagerie of death.

How to Start a Riot in a Brothel in Thailand by Ordering a Beer and Other Lesser Known Travel Tips

5 stars!

Full of humor and heart and all the great things that make life good.

How to Start a Riot in a Brothel in Thailand by Ordering a Beer, and Other Lesser Known Travel Tips is the first book of author Simon Yeats’s fun four-set volume Lesser Known Travel Tales, and it is a spectacular grin-inducing collection of vignettes from his extensive past wandering the globe. Told with humor and a lot of heart, warts and all, Yeats’s stories entertain, inspire, and elaborate on his experiences of a life well lived.

Yeats is a natural storyteller, and each chapter is introduced with a groan-worthy Dad joke. I was immediately drawn into his narrative, which starts with a family trip when the author was at the impressionable age of twelve. His father is a combination of wise and wild, and I easily commiserated with Simon’s mother about some of the events of the trip. Still, this family had FUN and created memories to last a lifetime.

Yeats’s experiences are amazingly varied and emphasize his adventures traveling on a tightly managed budget. Some of his journeys are financed as part of a job, such as being an international courier, while others come to be by working at his intended tourist destination. His life is devoted to fulfilling his wanderlust and subsequently always living away from his family. As satisfying as his ex-pat life proves, his reunions with family are scenes of joy and laughter but bittersweet as he ponders all the missed celebrations and life events of his loved ones. Still, the author has no regrets and has lived his life to the fullest.

With its amazing stories of travel and self-exploration, I recommend HOW TO START A RIOT IN A BROTHEL IN THAILAND BY ORDERING A BEER, AND OTHER LESSER KNOW TRAVEL TIPS to readers of memoirs, biographies, and travel.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Simon Yeats has lived nine lives, and by all estimations, is fast running out of the number he has left. His life of globetrotting the globe was not the one he expected to lead. He grew up a quiet, shy boy teased by other kids on the playgrounds for his red hair. But he developed a keen wit and sense of humor to always see the funnier side of life.

With an overwhelming love of travel, a propensity to find trouble where there was none, and being a passionate advocate of mental health, Simon’s stories will leave a reader either rolling on the floor in tears of laughter, or breathing deeply that the adventures he has led were survived.

No author has laughed longer or cried with less restraint at the travails of life.

Deus Tex Machina by Rob Witherspoon

While Kid filled in the amended amount, Dr. Wye said, “I’ve never seen such a thing as that pig toppling over. What did you do to it?”

The hog trapper spit a gob of tobacco juice at a hog who stuck its snout through the cage and said, “You tell him, Kid. You know the story better’n I do.”

Kid ripped out the check and gave it to Baldy, then drew breath, his mind churning through facts, hearsay, legends, and apocrypha. “That’s what you miss living in the city: the wonders of nature, the variety of flora and fauna, the mysteries of Darwinian evolution.”

Cotton hopped onto the tailgate and got comfortable. Of course, Kid knew the story better than anyone. He most likely made it up himself. This short preamble BS about nature and Darwin was one of Kid’s tricks to buy time while he fabricated a story.

“These are asymmetric migratory feral pigs,” Kid began. “Their left legs are longer than their right legs. It all stems from an event back in 1852, when immigrant Cyrus Ivanovichesky brought a shipload of Russian hogs into the port at Puta Guapa, down on the Gulf.”

“Cyrus unloaded the hogs and fed them a few days to let them recover from the long ocean voyage and then drove them north, up the Dos Flores river to Heelstring. He kept to the river, forcing the hogs to negotiate the slope of the riverbank. Since the valley runs north to south, the pigs had their right legs on the high side and their left legs on the low side. Now, when Cyrus got the pigs to Heelstring, he forded the La Rosa and then the La Margarita and settled just west of what is now Shana Doo’s entertainment district.”

Kid squatted on his haunches and peered into the cage. “Cyrus, exhausted from the trip from Russia, crossing the Atlantic and up through the heart of Texas, succumbed to a fever and died, leaving his hogs orphaned. It didn’t take long for those pigs to bust outa the pen and wander back downriver to Puta Guapa. On the southern portion of the journey, since they were now on the opposite side of the river, their left legs were again on the low side and their right legs were on the high side.” Kid pointed at dozens of pig’s feet shuffling in the trailer. “With equal length legs, the pigs kept trending downward to the river, except for a few born with a peculiar abnormality that turned out to their advantage. Hogs with slightly longer left legs traveled straighter and faster and were less likely to end up in the river and drown. When the survivors reached Puta Guapa, they forded the river to where Cyrus had them penned a year before. They mated, farrowed litters and headed back upriver to Heelstring. The cycle repeated over a hundred generations of pigs and now we have a species of pigs unique to Texas whose left legs are two inches longer than their right legs.” He squatted level to the trailer floor and pointed into the cage.

Dr. Wye hunkered down next to Kid and looked horizontally into the trailer, noticing how, at rest, half the pigs faced forward, and half faced rearward and the two groups leaned inward against each other to prevent falling over.

“To catch them,” said Kid, “you dig a bowl-shaped pit about forty feet across and chase them toward it. Once they cross the lip, they circle counterclockwise, like water down an Australian drain, until they pile up at the bottom. You don’t have to wrestle one to the ground. All you have to do is tilt the ground far enough for them to lose their balance and fall over.”

Cotton jumped down and hobbled over to Dr. Wye. He poked the sleeping porker with his stick.

“I envy this pig,” said Cotton. “He enjoyed a restful nap and missed Kid’s story. If he’d been awake to hear it, it likely would’ve rendered him unfit for psychological experimentation.”
