SYNOPSIS:

It’s a rib cookoff…with a recipe for murder.

Nicole Earp and Emma Banefield are celebrating another birthday at the Dulce Inn with the added fun of a rib cookoff in the park. Not only are chocolate martinis in their plans, Nic has her heart set on winning the cornbread contest. But as the excitement bakes, someone is stirring up trouble for the inn and its employees.

Strange occurrences at the Dulce are on the rise. Slashed tires, menacing phone calls, and unsavory characters add a vibe that threatens the sisters’ anticipated fun-filled stay. When the hot-headed hotel owner is caught wielding a bloody letter opener over a dead coworker, the sisters are embroiled in a caper to help the one person who finds their sleuthing as welcomed as a rattlesnake in her bed. But is she innocent?

The Chocolate Martini Sisters are primed to find out. First, they’ll have to eliminate a host of suspects that includes a dishonest restaurant owner, a jilted girlfriend, an ex-wife, the barkeeper, and a masseuse with a crush. If they can stay off the radar of the surly chief homicide detective long enough, they can put out the fire…unless the killer burns them first.

The third book in this amateur sleuths, cozy mystery series will have you chuckling and on the edge of your seat as the sisters solve the murder.

READ AN EXCERPT:

“Rumor has it Ms. Jackson is looking to the Chocolate Martini Sisters for, shall we say, guidance. Not to mention, Nic, your ex-husband is her attorney.” Even with sunglasses on, Ken’s expression came across as smug—a description she would never have assigned to his personality.

“Oh! How on earth do you know all of that?”

“They call us detectives, and some might think we’re good at our jobs.”

Em’s hand went to her mouth, stifling a snicker.

“Does that mean if we come across clues or actual evidence, you don’t want to hear from me?”

“Ah, Nic.” He flicked a finger under her chin. “I always like to hear from you.” He ticked his head as if considering how much to commit. “We’ll keep in touch. After all, you do have the ear of Ms. Jackson.” He nodded at Em and darted into the Dulce.

Aware her mouth opened and shut, she stared at her sister. “That was kind of weird.”

“But revealing. They haven’t a clue.”

Nic pushed her Panama higher off her forehead. “That’s what you got out of our exchange?”

“Hakata has never stonewalled us before. And I don’t think he would now since he knows we could probably share something helpful via Jillian. You heard his last remark. He’ll welcome an exchange when there’s anything to exchange. Even if he does have to be careful around Dawg. Now I’d really like to find the killer first.” Her sister’s competitive juices were gushing.

REVIEW:

5 stars!

The fun, sleuthing sisters return in another birthday weekend murder mystery!

Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder is the third book in the collaborative mystery series by author Joyce Pruell and Brenda Whiteside, the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mysteries, and this time, Nic and Em agree to help their recurring nemesis and hotel owner/manager, Jillian Jackson, prove her innocence in the murder of a former lover. With a cornbread baking contest, a rib cook-off, and the ever-present promise of a delicious chocolate martini, the story is full of culinary delights as well as romantic liaisons and, of course, a shocking murder.

The plot unfolds from the dual points of view of the main characters, sisters Emma Banefield and Nicole ‘Nic’ Earp. The smoothly transitioning alternating chapters effectively tell the story and provide a more robust view of events and insight into the characters’ thoughts. The sisters are truly opposite sides of the same coin, very different from each other yet sharing the same values and warm-hearted souls. They are quick to begin investigating or gathering information, as they term it, as the murder occurs early in the story, but Jillian Jackson, the disagreeable hotel owner/manager, officially asks for their help when she is arrested and charged with the murder of Leo Ragazzi, the assistant manager and the lover who recently rejected her.

The Dulce Inn is once again Murder Central in this third outing for the Chocolate Martini Sisters, and over the course of the previous books, and well summarized to date in this one, acquired a Peyton Place-ish vibe. The inter-relationships among the staff are starting to gain legendary status, and the high degree of fraternization provides additional opportunities for plausible red herrings. The sisters gather their bits of information from any and all who were at the hotel at the time of the murder or who might have insight into the victim’s background. With plenty of twists and turns keeping the story fresh and entertaining, coupled with easy-to-read narratives and writing styles, I whipped through this book in almost a single sitting.

Although this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read and enjoyed without reading the earlier ones; however, they were both excellent mysteries and shouldn’t be overlooked. I recommend CORNBREAD, RIBS, AND MURDER to cozy mystery readers and fans of the previous novels in the series.

Another girl has been taken.

Days later, the lifeless body of twelve-year-old Natalie Jarvis is found in a remote patch of woodland, a crown of roses delicately placed on her head. Just like Caitlin.

The killer is back.

Nikki rushes to her small hometown of Groveton, Ohio. She will do anything to stop another young girl dying, but she soon realises that nothing is what it seems—everyone in her hometown is keeping a secret. And when a note is discovered near Natalie’s body addressed to Nikki, it’s clear what the murderer really wants: her…

She’s caught killers before, but this time it’s personal. And Nikki will risk everything—even her own life—to get justice for every victim. It’s time to stop this twisted killer, once and for all…

Ten days ago, straight-A student Jessica Staley ran away from home. Now her lifeless body lies pale and still in an empty parking lot, her unblinking brown eyes staring up to the night sky…

FBI agent Nikki Cassidy’s heart pounds as she takes in the short, dark hair and delicate features of fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Jessica Stanley. It’s another unsolved murder in Groveton, Ohio, just like her sister, Caitlin, fifteen years before. Her family beg her to keep her distance, but Nikki knows she can’t walk away.

What if her sister’s killer is back?

Talking to Jessica’s heartbroken family, Nikki learns that she wasn’t happy at home. Just days ago, she packed a few belongings into her school backpack and left, never to be seen alive again.

Determined to give Jessica’s family the answers she never found for herself, Nikki works around the clock, trawling hours of CCTV footage from the scene. And just when she thinks she’s close to uncovering the truth, a chilling email arrives that confirms her deepest fear. There are more victims, Nikki. Can you ever stop me?

This killer is playing a dangerous game, and he has Nikki in his sights now—one wrong move and she could be his next victim. She’s determined to unmask the monster who has tortured her hometown for decades. But what if the killer is someone close to her? What if it’s someone she loves?

THE LOST ONES

Book 3 in the Detective Nikki Cassidy series

As dawn breaks over a small gas station on the outskirts of Groveton, Ohio, the body of a teenage girl lies totally still. Long blonde hair covers her face, and a length of frayed rope hangs loosely around her neck. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds her, just like her killer intended…

When FBI agent Nikki Cassidy receives a call from Groveton’s Chief of Police, her heart pounds. A young girl just knocked on the door of Nikki’s old family home, claiming to be Nikki’s kid sister, Caitlin. But Caitlin was murdered fifteen years ago. Who is the girl and what does she want?

Nikki thinks the impersonator could finally lead her to her sister’s twisted killer. But her hope is shattered when the girl’s lifeless body is found strangled at a local service stop. If the girl knew about Caitlin, could she have known the identity of the killer? Was she murdered before she could unmask them?

Going against her boss’s orders to stay away, Nikki traces the girl’s last known steps to her best friend, Shirley. Nikki learns that the girl was last seen meeting with a stranger at the mall. Could it have been her killer?

Closer than ever to uncovering the truth, Nikki can’t give up now. But when Shirley’s body is found at another service station, a length of rope wound around her neck, her heart shatters. Another young life has been lost. Nikki vows that this will be the last.

When an intruder breaks into her old home, Nikki knows it’s the killer sending her a sign. As she walks into the familiar old house in the dead of night, will she finally get justice and catch her sister’s killer, or did she just walk into a deadly trap?

Review:

5 stars!

One shocking twist after another!

The Lost Ones is the third book in author Dana Perry’s thrilling mystery series featuring FBI Agent Nikki Cassidy as she investigates another string of brutal murders of young teenage girls. With its determined, likable main character and complex plot, readers won’t want to put this book down!

The main character, FBI Agent Nikki Cassidy, is dragged into this latest series of murders when a teenage girl shows up at Nikki’s childhood home in Huntsdale, Ohio, claiming to be Caitlin Cassidy, her sister who was abducted and murdered fifteen years earlier. As more victims appear, each is discovered to have identified themselves as Caitlin in some way shortly before their deaths and in the company of a woman who looks remarkably like Nikki herself.

The story is well-paced and unfolds inch by inch as small, seemingly insignificant bits of information lead to big discoveries. The plot contains twist after twist, some that even made me gasp out loud when I came to them. The story was riveting, and I was on the edge of my seat from the building tension and the need to get to the final and surprising resolution.

While this third book in the series can be read and enjoyed on its own, the tension and excitement are much the result of the culmination of all the events from the previous books, and I feel they really should be read in series order for the best experience. I recommend THE LOST ONES to fans of the series and the series to readers who enjoy tense, thrilling serial killer mysteries featuring a strong, smart female protagonist.

SECRETS AND SCANDAL EXCERPT

As I walk away from the bar after exchanging absurd air kisses with Kori, my phone rings. Veronica Sharpe’s name flashes across the screen.

“Did you get it?” she says between heavy breaths. I figure she’s on the treadmill in her office. Veronica’s middle name is Multitasker.

“Hi to you too.”

“Okay, hi. Tell me, did Emily Delaney, my number-one reporter, get Kori Koffee to spill her beans?”

“You know I got it.”

I hear the treadmill beep indicating her workout is complete.

“You don’t sound very happy about it.”

“No, it’s great.” I adjust my voice to try to sound happy about it. “It’s just, you know, Kori Koffee.” I scrunch up my nose as if smelling her signature perfume, Kori Glory.

I get to the corner and bang on the walk button as Range Rovers and BMWs whisk by me, windshields framing aging yet pulled-tight faces of actresses and trophy wives desperate to get to their spa appointments.

“This deserves a celebration,” Veronica presses forward. “Meet me at Garnish in twenty minutes.”

I’m tired and not completely in the mood for Veronica and her celebrity-obsessed conversation, but I do love the bruschetta at Garnish. “Fine, but you’re buying.”

“What else is new?” she snorts. “Anyway, I want to hear about your date last night.”

I start to say I don’t want to talk about it, but before I can protest, she hangs up.

When I walk into Garnish, Veronica already has an order of bruschetta waiting for me, as well as a tall mojito with extra lime.

“This almost makes up for that assignment.” I lift my glass, and she clinks her beer bottle against it.

“So, she’s pregnant?” Veronica’s eyes gleam. “Obviously.” I take a long drink.

“And you got it on the record?”

“Everything is on the record. She saw the recording light.”

“Fair enough,” Veronica nods.

My phone rings, and Crystal’s name lights up the screen.

I hit ignore and place it back on the table.

“So, how was the date?” Veronica asks.

“I’d tell you, but I don’t think you could handle it.”

“Try me.” She narrows her eyes, waiting for the goods. “No, I mean I don’t think you could handle how boring it was.” I stretch my neck to the left and then the right, trying to ease out of the topic.

“How can that be? I thought this guy was pretty much perfect.”

I know she’s right. He is perfect - on paper. We were seated next to each other at a fund-raiser three months ago. He’s an entertainment lawyer who gets invited to top-shelf parties with true A-list celebrities. Come to think of it, that’s probably why Veronica was so excited when we started dating. He’s tall and fit with blue eyes and blond hair bleached by time spent in the pool and on the tennis court.

I really was excited when he asked me out. And I had a good time shopping for furniture for his new condo. I also had fun on our second date at Chez Rodrigo. But by our third date at the beach, I realized I was enjoying our dates because I like shopping and Spanish/French fusion cuisine, and sand beneath my feet, and not so much because I like him.

“I think I’m simply...” I shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know. He is a great guy.” I roll my eyes at my inability to articulate my feelings.

“Sure. He’s just not your guy.” Veronica takes a drink and nods at her own conclusion.

“Easy for you to say, Mrs. Sharpe.” At forty-one, Veronica is eight years older than me and has been happily married for twelve.

“I didn’t find my husband by staying with the wrong guys.” She motions to the waiter to bring her another beer. “If this guy isn’t right for you, move on. But...”

“But what?”

“Maybe you could stay friends?” She grins and blinks feigned innocence. “Those are some pretty fabulous parties he goes to.”

“Your concern for my emotional well-being is touching.” I shake my head. “Don’t worry, I stay friends with all my exes. It’s how we do it here in LA.”

Veronica gives me a knowing smile. “Naturally.”

Still, even with her reassurance, I wonder what is wrong with me that I’m not falling for Derek, a guy any normally functioning girl would be over the moon to date.

My phone dings as a text message comes in from Crystal.

Call me ASAP

I can’t imagine what Crystal could possibly have to tell me that’s urgent. I plop the phone into my purse.

“Look, I know you’re going to hate it when I say this.” Veronica tucks a strand of shiny black hair behind her ear. “I used to hate it when people said it to me.”

“Then don’t say it.” I put my hand up to block her words.

But she says it anyway. “When it’s the right guy, you just know.”

I throw my hands in the air. “I don’t believe you.” “Believe it. Now go home and write my cover story.”

As Veronica signs the credit card slip, my phone rings and Crystal’s name flashes across the screen again.

“I gotta take this,” I say pulling on my sweater. It’s Octo‐ ber, and even though it’s still in the seventies, I’ve acclimated to LA’s weather over the past fifteen years. Because of this, I usually need an extra layer on days dipping below eighty degrees. “I’ll email you the story by tomorrow.”

“You’re the best.” Veronica stands and polishes off her beer.

“You know it,” I say, hitting the accept button on my phone.

“Know what?” Crystal asks.

“Sorry, I was talking to my boss. So, where’s the fire?” “What fire?”

“Crystal, you both called and texted in the past twenty minutes.”

“I just wanted to make sure you heard. I mean I know you’d eventually hear from someone, but I thought it might be easier coming from me.” Crystal’s words are quick and breathless.

I unlock my car door and slip inside, the leather seats still warm from the late-afternoon sun.

“Slow down. What are you talking about?”

“So, then you haven’t heard about Lois?”

My heart starts beating faster as my mind anticipates the many possible directions Crystal’s next sentence could go. “No. What about Lois? What’s she gotten herself into now?”

“Emily...I’m so sorry, but Lois Miller is dead.”

REVIEW:

5 stars!

A well-done and intriguing start to a new cozy mystery series!

Secrets and Scandals is the first Gilman Gazette Cozy Mystery, a new series by author Piper Glendale, and with its Hollywood interview opening scenario, I was immediately hooked. From the blurb, I knew that the protagonist was slated to leave this often-tawdry business behind, but still, this kind of thing is like watching a trainwreck, and I couldn’t look away. As promised, the story quickly shifts to the main character, who firmly believes you can’t go home again - for a reason.

Emily Delany is the main character whose single past misstep was so big it caused her to flee her hometown immediately after high school. Fifteen years later, she’s still burdened by her guilt over having published a sensitive personal secret of a classmate in an ambitious desire for a big name-making story for the school paper. Emily’s guilt has kept her from ever visiting her best friend back in Gilman, even when Crystal needed her emotional support the most. She’d even cut ties with her mentor at the Gilman Gazette, Lois Miller, who, as the story begins, has died and left Emily a secret legacy in her will. Emily must return to Gilman for the reading of the will.

The plot has multiple interesting storylines, including an unsolved murder for which Lois was a main suspect before her death. The Gazette has a critical bank deadline to meet, and Emily, as the paper’s new owner, must hit the ground running to save the paper and return safely to the anonymous comfort of her life in Los Angeles. As this is the debut novel in a new series, the author must build an entire town from scratch, and Glendale does a terrific job introducing residents, businesses, and backstories without bogging down the action. Her descriptions of the town are vivid and nostalgic, making it sound like the perfect little tourist town it has gained a reputation for being.

Emily is surprised by her reception in town after her inglorious departure so many years ago: sometimes good, sometimes not. As she put her journalistic skills to work and started digging, the plot takes some twists and turns and ends up quite differently than I ever expected. I am definitely looking forward to more in this series.

I recommend SECRETS AND SCANDALS to cozy mystery readers, especially those who enjoy books set in Oregon and not on the coast.

April 8 - May 3, 2024 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

THE UNDERHANDED by Adam Sikes

Europe’s last line of defense against neofascism—a history professor?

Professor William Dresden has found solitude in the south of France to grapple with his troubled past—a neglected upbringing, failed romances, the recent demolition of his life’s work in academia, and even witnessing genocide, among other secrets. But he soon learns that he has much larger problems when an adrift MI6 officer, Adeline Parker, calls and insists on a meeting, revealing shocking information about his family. Then a bomb explodes.

William and Adeline narrowly escape the attempt on their lives and find themselves battling a group of neofascists and extreme nationalists who are inciting violent divisions across Europe. They are pulled into a shadowy war against a cabal called the Strasbourg Executive and pushed to the brink by family betrayals, corrupt institutions, and the Executive’s subversive plots against the fabric of Western society.

To survive, William must make tough decisions and act in ways he could’ve never previously imagined—but even that might not be enough.

Chapter 1

Provence, France

The unexpected vibration of my phone startled me, and I immediately regretted bringing it out here. I should have left it tucked in my jacket draped over the chair or dropped it carelessly on the kitchen counter. As it was, only a few people had this particular number, and I wasn’t expecting a call from any of them. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to hear from Phil or Gwen or Elliot or Alison—all good people whom I would call friends—but not at this moment.

I’d been enjoying my evening of quiet reflection, lost in my thoughts, mulling over what had happened and pondering what I was going to do next. I needed to do something; I couldn’t hide away forever, even if the idea was mildly appealing. I needed to get on with my life and my work, and just a few moments ago before this distraction, some acceptable ideas had started to percolate.

The phone vibrated again, rattling on the table next to me. And the caller ID showed Restricted, which made it even more bothersome, particularly now and especially here.

The south of France—with its beautiful beaches, superb wine, decadent women, and unbridled past—was where I went to escape or relax. It was a little of both this go around. Amidst the centuries-old villages, I could read, eat, flirt with socializing, and recharge. I was content here, and after a few days or weeks, I would be fortified to thrust myself into the breach and face the big bad world.

I watched the phone vibrate once more—three times now—and debated whether to let it go to voicemail. I preferred that option. It was the better option. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. Although I had my friends and colleagues and acquaintances and could attempt a front of affable charm now and again, in my truest form I was quiet, preferring the conversations in my head to those with actual human beings.

I was a historian and I preferred books to . . . well . . . just about everything. Books didn’t need anything, just to be read and understood. They embodied a conversation with the author that was codified with ink on paper, there to be surveyed and contemplated and always available. People, on the other hand, tended to be complicated and unpredictable, some exhaustingly so.

But there it went again. My phone. Four rings now.

Voicemail, I thought. If the call was important, the person would leave a message or ring back, right?

But . . .

The phone vibrated once more, the noise jarring as it clattered on the patio table, demanding attention like the obnoxious party guest who spoke too loudly for the room and who no one could avoid. I think everyone has encountered those individuals at one moment or another.

And again—it vibrated.

Dammit.

I threw back the last of my wine and snatched up the phone. “Hello?”

“Hello. Am I speaking with Professor William Dresden of Princeton University?” asked a woman’s voice I didn’t recognize. She had a British accent and a confident tone, like one accustomed to chucking authority around.

“May I ask who’s calling?” I replied.

“My name is Adeline, and I have something urgent to chat with the professor about.”

“Okay,” I replied, remaining polite but noting that she hadn’t offered a last name.

“Are you Professor Dresden?” she asked again.

“I am.”

“Good. Glad I reached you.”

“What can I do for you?”

“I’ll get right to the point. Neither of us like having our time wasted,” the woman began. “My organization needs your assistance. We’re aware that for the past few years you’ve been researching the lives of some lesser-known men from the nineteenth century. You’ve argued that they were driving forces during Europe’s imperial era, and you recently gave a talk in Washington, D.C., about them. You caused quite a bit of controversy.”

I didn’t respond but she was right. My latest research had indeed caused a pompous cabal to descend from the Ivory Tower who were intent on ripping up my life’s work. By focusing on the people that surrounded the famous personalities of the past—rather than the statesmen and generals themselves—I’d shown that the aides and deputies of history were often as influential as the principals. They worked behind the scenes, pushing here and whispering there, orchestrating events according to their own designs and those of their masters. Their obscurity was their power, and these lesser-known individuals had intrigued me for the past twenty years or so.

Sadly, in recent months, more than a few scholars—people I would call my peers—had attacked my conclusions, picking apart my research methods and analysis and even my misplaced commas. Some went so far as to call me second-rate, which I will admit hurt.

It wasn’t all that surprising, I suppose. For those who’d devoted themselves to being the renowned authority on the likes of Napoleon or Roosevelt, my analysis had called into question their life’s work. One historian from George Washington University even accused me of fabricating my research, although nothing could be further from the truth. That comment truly shocked me, something I’d not encountered before and never in all my years of academia heard leveled in front of an audience.

To say it had been an uncomfortable time would have put it too gently.

Thus, I wondered what side of the argument this woman was on and what she wanted. The prospect of thrashing out some minor point of no real consequence didn’t entice me. And in my current state, if provoked, I’d likely pop off and say something I’d regret. Being kind was one of life’s most important qualities, my dear mother had always said, and I agreed with her. But after a drink or two I could become a little edgy, which might be good or bad, depending on your perspective.

“From my own work,” the woman continued, “and in light of what you claim to have uncovered about these men, I have some documents I think you should see.”

“Is that so? May I ask what they’re about?”

“They pertain to a small group of men of the same era and caliber that you lectured on. Their actions connected.”

“Could you be more specific, please?” I asked, now thinking the woman may not have called to put me on the rack. She had another angle, though it was still unclear. Maybe she was nuts. “You said your name was Adeline, and you represent who?”

“I’d rather not say anything more on the phone. All I can tell you is that the papers have been secreted away for a long time. The information they contain, coupled with events in recent years, suggests we’re facing a revived threat to both Europe and America.”

I sat up. “What? What are you talking about?”

“This may sound bizarre, but you must believe me. What I’m referring to is highly sensitive.”

“I don’t understand. What information?”

“I shouldn’t say any more right now. I need you to trust me.”

“Trust you?”

“We shouldn’t discuss anything else. It’s too dangerous. We must meet in person.”

“Too dangerous? Who are you and how did you get this number?”

I raised out of my chair and scanned the backyard of the villa. It was sunset and the shadows were dancing underneath the Aleppo Pines that dotted the hills. I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up and, for a reason I could not explain, I wondered if I was being watched.

“Professor Dresden, I’ve no doubt you’re aware that Europe is facing numerous concerning challenges. An immigration crisis, climate impact, a resurgence of ethno-nationalists movements, Russia hammering on the eastern door . . . We need to meet tomorrow morning. Everything will become clear once we speak.”

I didn’t know how to respond. The woman wasn’t making sense. It was as if she’d drenched me with a mass of my own personal strife threaded with societal chaos and nonsense, intending to frighten or motivate me, I couldn’t tell. All I could muster was, “Thank you for the call, Miss . . . Adeline. But I’m going to hang up now. Have a good—”

“Professor, wait. There’s more. I wanted to tell you this in person, but,” she paused. “I have information about the death of your father. It was no accident.”

I slowly sat back down, her words reverberating in my ears, my chest suddenly going hollow. My father had died over twenty years ago in a car crash outside Paris. Images of a crumpled car and emergency workers scrambling about flashed through my mind. “What are you talking about? What do you know about my father?”

“Meet me tomorrow morning at eight at Le Trastevere in Villefranche-sur Mer. It’s on the water. Do you know it?”

“Yes,” I said without thinking. It was a restaurant in a small coastal town east of Nice.

“Good. See you then.”

The line went dead, but I kept the phone to my ear and stared across the countryside at the setting sun. I lost track of time, unable to form a coherent thought. The woman—Adeline—everything she’d said was at once a blur but jostled with vivid points of intense clarity . . . painful memories.

I interlaced my fingers on top of my head and pressed my palms against my temples, trying to stop the whirls of my thoughts.

Then, like one emerging from a storm, I grasped what just happened—what she’d done.

Son of a bitch.

I’d just been cold-pitched—approached without circumstance or context, and done in a manner so as to demand subsequent contact. It was how professionals orchestrated meetings when there was no logical reason for an introduction. Except this woman had done it using fear and pain, knowing enough about me to zero in on issues no normal person would have any idea about unless I’d shared it with them.

As everything began to crystallize, I then realized it was the combination of what the woman had said that was most unsettling.

I was a European historian and, by definition, my work—my life—focused on the past, not the present. Yet she’d brought up my lecture and said something about how it was connected to Europe’s current struggles . . . good Lord.

What could she possibly have to show me? What connected my work with the problems of today?

I had no idea.

As for my father—what did she mean his death was no accident? What else could it have been?

It had been nearly two decades since I’d put the man in the ground, and it had taken another year to close the man’s affairs and move on. My father—Ambassador Karl Dresden—had been an asshole, and I had no desire to reminisce.

A clap of thunder off in the distance brought me back. I glanced at my watch and saw it was getting late.

Leaning forward, I looked at the half-empty bottle of wine on the table that I’d been working on since dinner. It was a good vintage from a local winemaker, a Rhone blend, full-bodied and earthy, but I debated switching to scotch. I needed something stronger and no longer cared if someone was lurking about. If they were going to do something, they would have already done it.

Taking one last look at the call log on my phone, I snatched up the wine bottle and my empty glass and walked back into the villa. The stone walls were cracked and weathered, and the neglected hedges had overgrown what little there was of a patio.

The place hadn’t always been like this—dilapidated and forgotten. I’d spent several summers here as a child doing what young boys do, and I and my dear Olivia had come twice a year ever since we first met. She possessed a heart-stopping smile when she gazed through the backdoor across the fields. But that was a long time ago.

I made my way across the terracotta floor of the sitting room to the sideboard and opened the bottle of Balvenie. I filled a tumbler with a treble, downed half of it, swirled my glass, and finished the rest.

Shouldn’t discuss anything else over the phone. What the hell does that mean?

I poured myself a second glass—just a double this time—ran my fingers through my hair, and dropped down on the leather sofa. I leaned back, sinking into the cushion, and squeezed the bridge of my nose. When I opened my eyes, I beheld the painting above the stone fireplace. It was a landscape by Albert Bierstadt, an original, and one of the artist’s lesser-known pieces depicting the Swiss Alps, painted in 1856. It had been in my family for years.

The interplay between light and darkness was masterful. The snowcapped mountains were brilliantly lit, and the gentle slope of a hill was lush with grass and evergreens. But there were crevices and depths that were nearly black. I had always considered those places the unknown, hiding something sinister, like a troll or an evil wizard. A child’s imagination.

I took another drink of my scotch and tossed my phone on the coffee table. I closed my eyes and tried to block out the memories that Adeline had resurrected.

Review:

5 stars!

Hits the ground running and never lets up!

The Underhanded is a contemporary international political thriller by bestselling novelist Adam Sikes, author of the 2022 cliffhanger Landslide. In this exciting new adventure, a history professor finds himself caught up in a desperate effort to stop a century-plus-old secret society from toppling the current political institutions in Europe and replacing them with throw-back Eurocentric regimes.

The main character is William Dresden, a Princeton history professor who has isolated himself at his family’s villa in Provence after the unexpectedly devastating, and in some cases, vicious, reception of a lifelong research study by his peers, followed by the loss of his grant funding. The 50-something professor is very likable and genuinely nice, but he has hidden depths for action that come to his aid when pressured. His scholarly research had picked up on several figures in the past who, although operating in the background, critically influenced the decisions of those in power and, consequently, determined the course of history. Focusing on these shadowy individuals, Dresden’s research danced all too closely to uncovering the existence of a secret society of politically connected men known as the Strasbourg Executive. While he had not made the connection to the Executive yet, it was only a matter of time, as his own family had been secretly and intimately involved from its inception.

Targeted by the Executive’s assassins, William is clued in to the behind-the-scenes organization and their long-term goals by MI6 agent Adeline Parker, and out of necessity, he enters the fray to put a halt to their plans. However, confused and aware she’s withholding information, William doesn’t know who he can trust.

The story hits the ground running, much like William and Adeline must do to escape the Executive’s operatives, and the action never lets up. There are jaw-dropping twists as the complex plot unfolds. The author’s writing is compelling and descriptive, making you feel you are on location with William, seeing events as they happen. I was engaged by the story from the start, and the time and pages flew by.

With its engaging and surprisingly capable main character, international settings, and intriguing plot, I recommend THE UNDERHANDED to readers who enjoy political thrillers and mysteries with a historical flavor but contemporary similarities.
