The Family Man is the fourth and final book in author Lyn Farrell’s excellent mystery series, Rosedale Investigations, and it is satisfyingly filled with answers to lingering questions and intriguing new cases for the partners. With cases of missing husbands, cheating wives, and the founder’s announced retirement, I didn’t want to put the book down and had to read it through, cover to cover, to find out what would happen next.
Billie Jo Bradley, Dory Clarkson, and Wayne Nichols share the spotlight and have their hands full, while PD Pascoe somewhat takes a backseat as he announces his retirement from the company he founded. While Billie Jo continues to mature in her role at the agency, Dory sees opportunities to branch out, and Wayne and his wife, Lucy, help a young homeless teen with a badly broken arm. Each main character takes on parts of their latest cases, making the story a real collaborative effort. Each one encounters big changes in their personal lives as their business relationships face reorganizing after PD’s stepping back.
The group tackles multiple cases in the story, but the main one revolves around a missing husband and father. The plot twists are numerous and begin immediately when their next client wants them to locate HER missing husband, who appears to be the same man married to client number one! I enjoyed the group dynamics and how well they worked together to get to the bottom of what turned out to be a complex mystery. They cover all the bases and conduct a good investigation without a lot to go on. Wayne is torn over his career and working methods and how, if things went south, they could affect his new wife. When his actions lead to tragic consequences, his remorse and self-blame are heartbreaking. His uneasy initial reaction to the homeless teen, Nightshade, is understandable, even as he is the one adult who probably can relate to the boy the best.
While this book is the fourth in the series, it can be read and appreciated as a standalone. However, the previous novels are well worth reading and shouldn’t be passed up. The answer to Billie Jo’s big question that has existed since the start of the series is finally and completely answered.
I recommend THE FAMILY MAN to mystery readers who enjoy a good detective tale, procedural-style stories, and fans of the previous novels in the series.
