The honeymoon begins with a dead body in the bedroom...
Niagara Falls, 1923. Traveling out of the city isn’t PI Jax Diamond’s cup of tea, but when he and Laura along with their courageous companion, Ace, head to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon, they’re on cloud nine. That is, until Jax carries his new bride over the threshold, and there’s a corpse in their bed that looks to have been there since the dawn of time.
A ten-year-old unsolved murder sets off a string of others with victims plunging to their deaths over the falls, and all the evidence is pointing to nightclub owner and their good pal, Orin Marino, as the killer.
Jax, Laura, Ace, and friends risk their lives trying to solve a crazy riddle and stop a killer before the next victim takes the plunge. But every step forward sends them two steps back. It’s a wild and crazy ride with twists, turns, and belly flops in this fun and fast-paced 1920s cozy thriller.
Easily reads as a standalone.
They touched their glasses together and took a sip of champagne, but Ace started digging at the bedroom door, as though trying to burrow his way right through it. Jax got mad. “Cut it out, Ace. You’re ruining a romantic moment.”
Ace looked over at them and continued digging.
“He’s just curious,” Laura said. She lovingly wrapped her arms around Jax’s neck and whispered in his ear, “Carry me over the threshold now, Jax.”
He kissed her forehead, easily lifted her into his arms, and held his eyes on her as he walked to the bedroom door. He nudged Ace out of the way with his foot, but when he turned the doorknob, Ace shoved the door open, beat them inside, raced over to the bed, and barked at it.
At that point, Jax wished he’d listened to Marvin and found other accommodations for his canine partner. Ace wasn’t cooperating with him at all.
Then Jax glanced at the bed and stopped dead in his tracks. His blue eyes popped open wide, and all the color drained from his face. “What the heck…”
“What’s wrong, Jax?” Laura asked.
He twirled Laura around and couldn’t carry her out of the bedroom fast enough. “Ace, get out of there!” He put Laura down and shouted to Ace again. As soon as Ace ran out of the bedroom, Jax slammed the door shut. He brushed his hand through his hair and paced across the room.
“What’s going on?” Laura stood there, wringing her hands together. “What’s in the bedroom?”
“You don’t want to know.” He picked up speed. “What a nightmare!”
“If you don’t tell me, Jax, I’m going into there to see for myself.”
“No!” He rushed over to her and held her by the shoulders. “Laura, please…you don’t want to see what’s in there. I don’t even know how to tell you.”
“Jax, you’re acting like you saw a ghost.”
“Yeah, well, you’re not far off. There’s a dead body in there.”
Laura’s hand flew over her mouth.
“Looks like he’s been dead for years.”
“We need to call the police!” She pulled away from him. “Wait a minute. What do you mean, he’s been dead for years?”
“The only thing left of him are bones. This is great. Our romantic honeymoon just flew out the window.”
