Book Review: Lethal Standoff by DiAnn Mills

Lethal StandoffLethal Standoff by DiAnn Mills
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Starts at high speed and never slows down!

Lethal Standoff is a new Christian romantic suspense novel by the talented, veteran author DiAnn Mills and features dedicated and compassionate female hostage negotiator, Carrington Reed. The story is action-packed and infused with romantic tension from the start, and the entire story is set within the framework of faith.

Carrington Reed is caring, compassionate, and sincere in her desire to help all parties involved in a hostage situation. She genuinely tries to look past the perpetrators’ actions to get to the root causes of what they’ve done to gain as successful a resolution as she possibly can for all. She is in high demand as an independent hostage negotiator, and the wear and tear of the work is taking a toll. Carrington harbors a health concern that could put an end to her successful career.

Levi Ehrlich is a Houston journalist who reports on the very situations Carrington tries to defuse, so their paths have crossed often in the past. They’ve developed something of a friendship due in large part to his trustworthy, fair, and balanced reporting. Until now, their relationship has remained strictly professional, but both secretly feel an undeniable romantic attraction to the other.

Levi’s personal life has undergone some extreme changes since his recent conversion to Messianic Judaism. Born into a conservative Jewish family, he’s been rejected by his father, mother, and sister. Still, he holds out hope that someday they will relent and accept him again, no matter the differences in their beliefs.

The plot is fast-paced as Carrington is called from one crisis to another, and Levi is close behind in search of a good story. When Levi’s boss demands exaggerated, sensationalized copy to boost circulation, Levi refuses to compromise his integrity, even under threat of dismissal. However, when the hostage negotiation takes some drastic turn, Carrington and Levi are certain there’s more to the hostage-taker’s motive than he claims. As they follow their instincts, the story answers with some surprising twists and turns.

The author’s storytelling is immersive and compelling; the pages practically turned themselves on the way to the final resolution. With both characters experiencing spiritual struggles, there are some frank and open discussions and questioning of faith and its impact on their lives and the impact of their life experiences on the state of their faith. This is a story of forgiveness and renewal.

I recommend LETHAL STANDOFF to readers of Christian romantic suspense.

Book Review: Beneath the Broken Oak by Lori Altebaumer

Beneath the Broken OakBeneath the Broken Oak by Lori Altebaumer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Excitement and suspense from its adrenaline-inducing beginning to its surprising conclusion.

Beneath the Broken Oak by Lori Altebaumer is an exciting and suspense-filled story set in West Texas. It is told in dual timelines that will keep readers turning pages as fast as they can. Indeed, there were twists in the plot that had me gasping out loud!

The story’s main protagonist, Jodee Trevaine, is with the Texas A&M Forest Service and is in the small town of El Hueso to check out an ancient live oak, which, if trees could talk, could definitely tell a tale. A simple restroom break at a truck stop proves to be a life-changing event for more than one reason, including a chance encounter with a man from her past, a child’s abduction, and a vicious attack.

The plot unfolds in dual timelines and from multiple points of view, each with their own storylines of building suspense and secrets. But perhaps my favorite aspect of the book was the mysterious, other-worldly cowboy who makes timely appearances just when he’s needed the most.

However, it is the author’s writing style that really made this book special for me. Her use of language made for compelling reading, with vivid descriptions that piqued my interest in what she was saying beyond the gripping tale, as well as tantalizing foreshadowing of what was yet to come in the story itself. I couldn’t put this book down, wanting to see what would come next and next and next.

I recommend BENEATH THE BROKEN OAK to readers of Christian fiction, mystery, and suspense.

Chapter One

SEPTEMBER - CARRINGTON

My role as a hostage negotiator often plunged me into the evil designs of the human mind. I embraced the responsibility and possible danger because it’s my identity— a one-woman battlefront determined to free others from victimization.

The challenge excited me, but fear of failure stalked me, and respect for human life was my constant companion. Too often innocent lives depended on my ability to negotiate their safe release without anyone getting hurt. The demands, rewards, and sometimes the defeats with tragic outcomes kept me awake at night. How could I have done things differently? My apprenticeship began when I was eight years old, but thinking about those days didn’t change the past. Right now, lives were in jeopardy. . . .

I’d driven ten minutes out from a critical situation on a Wednesday afternoon when my cell phone rang. My contact, a detective from the Houston Police Department, had spent several hours talking to an angry man who held his wife and son hostage.

“Carrington, we have the information you requested,” Detective Aaron Peters said. “The man inside the home is the owner, Nick Henderson. Age thirty-five. Married to Christine. He’s holding his wife and eight- year- old son at gunpoint. Yesterday, he was served divorce papers, and we believe this is in retaliation.”

Hurt. Rejected. Probably a lit stick of dynamite. “You talked to him from the outside?”

“We’ve routed his calls through our mobile command center. I tried talking to him. Got nowhere. He hung up on me.” Aaron blew out his frustration.

Domestic calls were the most dangerous, often violent, causing me to appreciate my Kevlar vest. I had a handgun in my purse, but I could count on one hand the times I’d pulled it. Never used it. “All right. I’m nearly there. SWAT in place?”

“Yes, two have clear shots. Not an action I want to take unless necessary.”

“Me either. What are Henderson’s demands?”

“Just to leave him alone or he’ll pull the trigger on his family.”

Cool, calm focus settled on me. My ability to mediate critical discussions depended on my wearing emotional blinders to the outside world. “When did the problem start?”

“The wife phoned 911 at 8:00 a.m. today. I don’t know how long he was there before she reached out to us. We’ve been called here twice in the past month for domestic abuse.”

I glanced at my watch, and it neared 4:00 p.m. “Have HPD negotiators been talking to him?”

“Yes. Henderson hung up on them too. He’s drinking. Slurring his words. Seems to have trouble concentrating.”

Alcohol could make him more volatile. Flashing lights appeared on the residential street ahead. “I’m parking now. Give me five minutes.”

“I’m standing beside my car in front of the house.”

“Aaron, do you have Henderson’s work history?”

“Fired three months ago from Home Depot, where he held a management role. They walked him out of the store in front of his employees.”

The man definitely had nothing to lose.

Phone in hand, I hurried from my parked truck and raced to where police cars barricaded the entrance to the street where Henderson held his family. A reporter blocked my way between vehicles. She rammed a mic in front of my face.

“Carrington Reed, do you think this standoff will have a peaceful resolution?”

My blood boiled. The last time I had verbally unleashed on her aggressive means to get the best story, she lied in her article about my concern for those in danger. I paused long enough to give her eye contact. “My goal is always a peaceful solution. Excuse me, I need to talk to HPD.”

“Are the police advocating a violent takedown?”

“No.” I sidestepped around her and ignored her shouts.

Aaron stood in front of the home and waved. He had the appearance of average—average height, weight, gray eyes, brown hair, and shoulder span— but nothing about his physical appearance showed his intense scrutiny of a crime scene. His rating as one of HPD’s finest hit my respect button.

“Good to see you. I’d like the man’s cell number,” I said. “I assume my cell phone is routed through the command center too?”

“Sure thing.” He gave me the information. “The wife’s name is Christine, and the son’s name is Rand.”

I nodded my thanks and pressed in the digits. A man answered on the second ring.

“Nick, this is Carrington. I’m standing beside a police car outside your house, and I’d like to help you.”

“I . . . leave me alone.” He spoke fast and loudly. “I’m busy.”

“What do you need?”

“You can get rid of all those cops. I can’t breathe.”

I expected a more belligerent response. “Nick, I can’t do that. These officers are here to protect you in case someone tries to break into your home and hurt you.”

“I’d kill my wife and kid first.”

“Tell me why you feel that way.”

“They deserve it for the way they’ve treated me.” He stumbled over his words. “I’m a good husband and dad.”

“I’m sure you’re great at both. Tell me what’s hurting you.”

REVIEW:

5 stars!

So good I immediately bought her two previous Love Inspired books!

Kidnapped in the Woods, the 3rd Love Inspired publication by Deena Alexander, is an exciting, pulse-pounding, run-for-your-life story in which the two main characters, strangers to each other, desperately try to thwart a human trafficking operation. The story starts suspensefully tense and never lets up for a second. It grabbed me from page one until the very last one was turned.

Both Rachel Davenport and Patrick Ryan (with his search and rescue dog, Shadow, by his side) readily put their lives on the line to try and save Jane, a young runaway neither has met before. Rachel, a journalist who had previously done a story on young runaways, rushes straight in to help while Pat becomes involved when Rachel and Jane stumble across his cabin in the woods on Long Island. The odds are overwhelmingly against them getting away, but they continue improvising as a blizzard storms around them. Both adults are wounded souls with trust issues from past traumas who have been questioning their connection to God. The story is told from both of their perspectives, so readers are privy to their inner turmoil and how they work through it. I was impressed by how naturally Alexander wove in her characters’ thoughts on their Christian beliefs and honest prayers to God for his help and intercession in the events in their lives: one of the best I’ve read.

I recommend this highly satisfying read, KIDNAPPED IN THE WOODS, to those who are already fans of Love Inspired books and those new to the line. Jack Moretti, a secondary character in this book, was the feature of Alexander’s SHIELDING THE TINY TARGET, published in July 2022.
