Not one of the hundred pillows in Chiara’s bedroom remained on her bed when the god finally had had enough of the woman who ruled here as Lemuria’s Evening Star. She lay belly down on marble tiles in a slick of oil and wine and surrounded by candles he was quenching, one by one, with his fingers.

His short sword gleamed from the midst of the mess, hair from her body and her head on its blade. He hadn’t done a protracted ritual for the god in a very long time, and Lemuria’s rites rang as ancient and primal as Enlil’s name.

Their tryst had included moments when fear glazed her round, brown eyes, and moments when he felt certain the god overestimated what Tempus’ human flesh could give and hers could accept.

Still, he’d never killed a woman unintentionally, and although she might hurt when passion fled, now she merely lazed, intoxicated, malleable, sated and unresisting in the middle of the floor.

Once he’d snuffed the last candle, she reached for a pillow and propped her chin upon it so she could watch him more easily.

The big bed might have been easier on her, but she and the god had done things by the book. Still on her belly with the pillow under her jaw, she said, “You’ll really go with Rath and Mano into their horrid world tomorrow?”

“You tell me.” He was hunting for his leathers among her pillows.

“Stay here. With me. We could recast the lot. You could be free of your god forever, here. Stay, and you’ll learn of pleasures you never dreamed . . .”

“I’m a fighter, a soldier, a simple mercenary who had the bad luck to fall in with an insatiable god. It’s been so long, I wouldn’t know how to do anything else.”

“You could be the first not to succumb to Lemuria’s legerdemain. Don’t cast a lot, and you’re safe here until you do. We have strife close at hand, should you crave excitement: all the strife of many lands. From here you can help all of humanity — ”

“You must have mistaken me for a politician or a would-be king. I’m not the one to chart any soul’s course. Not after what I did with mine.”

“What do you want, then?”

And Faun’s words came back to him: “Survival, that’s the thing.”

Audiobook Review - Forest Legend: The Tale of Ol' Split Toe by Dan Ellens, narrated by the author

Forest Legend: The Tale of Ol' Split ToeForest Legend: The Tale of Ol' Split Toe by Dan Ellens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An entertaining, informative, and wonderful surprise!

Forest Legend: The Tale of Ol’ Split Toe by Dan Ellens was not at all what I expected; it was something better! The story was an entertaining, informative, and wonderful surprise. I thought I was going to get the life story of a deer, and I did, but it was just so much more as we follow him through time and Michigan’s natural past, courtesy of a time portal that calls to the creature when it opens during eclipses.

The main character is a large buck with an impressive set of antlers, known to the locals through legend, the hoofprints he leaves behind, and the occasional and brief sightings, as Ol’ Split Toe. The story unfolds from his viewpoint as he lives through the eons, all in a small area of the Michigan peninsula. He gives readers a close-up view of what the land experienced and what the people living in the area were doing from 8500 BC to the present time. Along the way, he takes a particular interest in several of the local human inhabitants: Mukwah, a young Ojibwe hunter; Angus and Grace, a pioneering couple establishing a farm, and Edra, an educated single woman living on her own in the 1870s.

The story describes how the land and water changed over time, how vegetation shifted from one kind to another, and how humankind impacted or was impacted by those processes, all couched within the deer’s day-to-day and time-traveled lifetime. I loved hearing his observations on those he watched, especially his story about what happened to Angus’s farm dog. The deer experiences his own exciting adventures, too; over the centuries, many dangerous situations will have you on the edge of your seat wondering how he’s going to get out of trouble.

The audiobook edition is capably narrated by the author himself, who does a wonderful job bringing his characters to life. He speaks slowly and enunciates clearly, which really holds up well if a listener wants to play the recording at a faster speed.

I recommend FOREST LEGEND: THE TALE OF OL’ SPLIT TOE to readers and listeners, young and old, especially those looking for an engaging nature or animal story or those who live in Michigan.

A red cloud rising out of the east was borne seaward on a hungry wind that howled like a devil. It was a hot cloud, a wet cloud full of the promise of rain, and yet it shed no drop on the forest below. It spread across the wilderness without end, a cloud like a funnel, a cloud like a waterspout turned on its side.

It crossed the scorched earth between the forest and the city on the coast, low to the ground and howling. Then it arched up like a striking snake, a hissing serpent that ate the sky and reared high over the city’s walls.

By then no one walked the city streets. Everywhere the city’s folk had fled indoors, even from the courtyards of the king. No peltast stirred on the battlements; no sentry held his ground. From within the walls of the palace, men peered out through slits at the unnatural red storm.

Women held each other in their boudoirs, and children sheltered under mothers’ skirts. Noise went everywhere, carried on a wet and flailing wind that made hairs stand up on arms and necks and dogs scramble under sturdy beds to whine.

Macon was in his father’s stables with his sister Tabet when the maelstrom started; and there he stayed, working with the grooms to calm the horses, lest one break a leg rearing and kicking. Among horses, as men, hysteria travels fast.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT:

A hellhound emerged from the swirling smoke, its eyes burning with an evil fire. Two towering demons flanked the beast, their twisted forms radiating dark energy. Accompanying them was a horde of monstrous spiders, their grotesque legs and mandibles glistening in the dim light. Ordi's heart pounded in his chest; he hated spiders—no, he was terrified of them. These were no ordinary arachnids; they ranged from five to eight feet tall, their massive forms looming menacingly. The challenge before him was immense. Hellhounds could withstand most mortal magic, and the demons posed a threat he had only read about in the academy's ancient tomes. Desperately cycling through spells in his mind, Ordi cursed under his breath, doubting whether any would suffice against such formidable adversaries. Read more – link in comments.

GUEST POST:

Please welcome Alex Zenk, the author of today's featured book, to the blog with a special guest post.

What Ignites Creativity in Me?
by Alex Zenk

Inspiration fuels my creativity, and three forces consistently ignite it: faith, landscapes, and literature. Each offers a unique spark, grounding me while pushing me to explore new depths.

Faith is my bedrock. It’s not just a matter of religious belief, but a quiet trust in a purpose beyond myself. Whether through prayer or meditation, faith provides clarity in chaos, reminding me that even small actions ripple outward. It inspires me to approach challenges with resilience and to find meaning in the ordinary, like a moment of gratitude that turns a mundane day profound.

Landscape awakens my senses. The vastness of a mountain range or the restless churn of an ocean wave humbles me, putting my place in the universe into perspective. A fog-draped forest or a starlit desert sky feels alive, urging me to capture their fleeting beauty in words or ideas. These natural wonders demand presence, pulling me from distraction into awe, and inspire me to create with the same raw, untamed energy.

The literature of Tolkien and Lewis ignites my imagination. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, with its rich lore and languages, teaches me the power of meticulous world-building, inspiring me to craft stories with depth and authenticity. Lewis’s Narnia blends wonder with moral clarity, showing how allegory can resonate across ages. Their works challenge me to weave faith and fantasy into narratives that explore truth and beauty, urging me to create with purpose.

Together, faith, landscapes, and literature inspire me by connecting the personal to the universal, grounding me in wonder, and urging me to create with purpose.
