No good deed goes unpunished…

Kiki Lowenstein is used to juggling crafts, customers, and chaos—but she never expected her latest charity project to lead to murder.

When Kiki offers free crochet classes to make stuffed animals for hospitalized children, the project seems like the perfect way to give back. But tensions quickly rise among her students, and a heated confrontation sparks rumors, accusations, and a social media frenzy that threatens to destroy lives.

Then everything takes a deadly turn.

On a foggy Mardi Gras morning, Kiki discovers the body of Celeste Harrow behind her store.

Suddenly, Kiki is caught in a tangled web of secrets, lies, and motives. The victim had made enemies. Plenty of them. And now, Kiki must figure out who turned a good deed into a deadly game—before suspicion lands squarely on her.

With her business at risk, her family in the spotlight, and a determined detective asking hard questions, Kiki must rely on her instincts (and a little help from her friends) to uncover the truth.

Because in this cozy mystery, nothing is as harmless as it seems…

Book Review: Kilned at the Ceramic Shop (Braddock Mystery, #1) by Donna Clancy

Kilned at the Ceramic Shop (A Braddock Mystery, #1)Kilned at the Ceramic Shop by Donna Clancy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Entertaining and interesting beginning to a new cozy mystery series.

Kilned at the Ceramic Shop is the first book in author Donna Clancy's new cozy Braddock Mystery series set in the small town of Braddock, Maine. Although I felt the story gets off to an uneven start, the action quickly picks up, and the plot thickens, as they say.

The main character is successful mystery author Tammy Wright, who returns to her hometown of Braddock after a seven-year absence to assist her Aunt Clara at her ceramics shop during the upcoming tourist season. Besides getting up in years, Clara Beale suffers more and more from arthritis, making the tasks at her beloved business difficult and painful. Tammy plans to split her time between working at the shop and writing her next mystery. Their initial reunion at the shop was a little confusing to me as they didn't seem particularly close, and her arrival didn't appear well planned. Her aunt has prepared the guest cottage for her, which is behind her own home, but it still feels like she has just "shown up," not having seen her aunt once since high school.

Another inconsistency for me occurs during and after the women's confrontation with Wilmot Sawyer. Clara comes across as a doddering, indecisive old woman, and it takes a lot of coaching from Tammy for her to build up to righteous anger over Wilmot's actions. However, she is consistently described as a very strong woman throughout the rest of the book. She is nice, caring, and active in her town's leadership, but seems easily swayed by others.

As the first in a series, the author must craft an entire town and its population on which to build her stories, and it is perhaps even more critical in this case, as the series title bears the town's name. The author introduces the various businesses, neighbors, and townspeople of Braddock without overwhelming the reader with blocks and blocks of exposition. People and places are featured as natural and fun parts of the story. I thought it was unusual in this typical cozy mystery town that the residents seemed to show only a cursory concern over the murder and kidnapping of two of their lifelong friends and neighbors, though. Clara is an elected selectman, and there's no massive gathering of searchers or candlelight vigil. However, later, the entire town comes together to help Tammy clean up the destruction at the ceramic shop, so if Clara is ever found, she doesn't encounter a mess when she returns to work. There was the same lack of reaction after the murder: no funeral was mentioned or well-attended visitation.Still, the story picks up and gains a lot of momentum as Tammy takes matters into her own hands to find out who is behind her aunt's disappearance, the acts of vandalism and destruction, and the murder. The attraction between Tammy and Zeke is sweet and believable, slowly building into something more. I loved this second chance at a relationship together for both of them.

The two real estate developers are both pieces of work and easy to boo and hiss. There is a plentiful sprinkling of clues for the alert reader to note, and I thought the resolution was clever and satisfyingly complex once all was finally revealed.

I recommend KILNED AT THE CERAMIC SHOP for cozy mystery readers, especially those with an interest in the hobby of making ceramics.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advance Review Copy from the author through Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours.

After a scandalous arrest in San Francisco, Carissa Carmichael has moved back to her small Southern California hometown to start over as she opens her Aromatherapy Apothecary shop and reflexology services. A tourist destination, Oak Creek Valley, seems the perfect place to put the past behind her, but it seems no one will let her forget, especially her high school nemesis, Lacie. When Carissa finds her frenemy murdered after having a public altercation at the town's playwright conference and festival, she becomes the primary suspect. It doesn't help that the tarot cards she drew earlier in the day foretold the nature of the murder weapon. Despite her father's position as Oak Creek Valley's chief of police, the detective assigned to the case assumes she's guilty.

When tarot death cards begin turning up to taunt her, Carissa not only has to prove her innocence to keep her freedom, she has to make sure death doesn't come calling for her or those she loves. With the suspects acting as slippery as the essential oils she distills, it's up to Carissa to apply pressure and sniff out the truth before it's too late.

Includes essential oil and reflexology tips.

When her son's new pet becomes evidence in a murder case, scrapbook store owner Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler discovers that some family secrets are worth killing for.

All eight-year-old Erik wanted for his birthday was a bird. What he got was Solo-a traumatized lovebird whose mate was recently devoured by a boa constrictor at a local pet shop.

But when Kiki learns that Solo originally belonged to Ruthie Goldman, a beloved member of their temple community who died after a brutal home invasion, she realizes this is no ordinary rescue pet.

Solo may be small, but he's carrying big secrets-literally. X-rays reveal the tiny bird has swallowed several diamonds from the robbery that killed his previous owner. Now someone is desperately trying to track down Erik's feathered friend, and Kiki's family is in danger.

As Detective Chad Detweiler investigates the diamond theft that triggered Ruthie's fatal stroke, Kiki uncovers a web of family betrayals, frozen embryos, and twisted ideas about genetic purity.

With her trademark blend of humor, heart, and small-town Missouri charm, Kiki must protect her family while helping to solve a murder that hits frighteningly close to home. Because when inheritance, infertility, and identity collide, even the most loving families can harbor deadly secrets.

"Fans of cozy mysteries will delight in this charming blend of family drama, small-town secrets, and feathered friends. Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler proves once again that the most dangerous mysteries often begin with the most innocent questions."

CATS MEWELLA AND RIDLEY SPEAK OF MANY THINGS

Ridley and Mewella are the twin black cats who live with Paula, Pauleen, and Paulette Hart, the grandmother, mother, and daughter team who manage House of Quilts, where the Crafty Cat story begins. The kitty sister and brother, though not out solving murders, add their own furry dimension to the tale. Please welcome Mewella and Ridley to our blog today!

Mewella: Thank you so much, Guatemala Paula, for having us on your show! We don’t get many chances to voice our opinions.

Ridley: Yeah, we don’t even get to talk in our author’s book, Crafty Cat. (Ridley harrumphs into the microphone)

Mewella: (Mewella nudges her brother) None of the cats in Mollie Hunt’s Crazy Cat Lady cozy mysteries talk human. You know that.

(Ridley harrumphs again.)

Mewella: We voice our issues in other ways. Remember when you were catnapped? You were scared to death, and you screamed and screamed. Anyone would know you needed help without you actually saying it.

Ridley: I wasn’t scared—I just yowled so that you could find me.

Mewella: All right. But what about when you sat on the Grandmother’s lap and purred. You didn’t need human words to tell her how much you loved her.

Ridley: That’s true. I did love her. But then she was killed. Murdered. I don’t understand how humans can kill one of their own. Cats would never do such a thing.

Mewella: I know, brother. I know.

Ridley: We did help our human family cope with the loss, didn’t we? We were extra sweet and less demanding of our needs. Why, we even let them get away without giving snacks a few times.

Mewella: That was when they had their friend helping them out.

Ridley: The friend wasn’t exactly cat savvy, if you know what I mean.

Mewella: She was trying to do her best.

Ridley: (pointed stare) Was she, Mewella? Was she really?

Mewella: Oh, I don’t know. (Shakes her fur and kick-scratches her collar.) We only know our part of the story, the part that took place in our home. It’s a good thing the author wrote it all down. Maybe the Mom will read it to us someday.

Ridley: That would be nice. I’d like to know how it ended. Especially the part about where I saved the day.

Mewella: You? You were nowhere near when the final battle came down.

Ridley: I was there in spirit, sister. We cats are amazing.

Mewella: Now that’s something we can agree on, Ridley. Cats are amazing!

SYNOPSIS:

When the town council hires Chloe Abbington’s close friend, famous wall muralist Lana Easton, to paint a mural advertising the return of the floating amphitheater, not everyone in Whisper Cove is happy about the theater or Lana. Naysayers think the noise from concerts and visitors will disrupt their quiet community. It doesn’t help that a lot of money taken from the town’s budget is being used to pay the muralist for her services. The mood turns even more grim when Lana is found dead, and since Chloe was there alone to discover her body, that makes her the prime suspect.

Before Chloe finds herself painted into a corner as the killer, she and sister Izzie hurry to solve the case and find the real criminal. The suspect list grows to include Lana’s boyfriend and her intern, as well as a couple of local residents. The task is a tall order for the sisters, and it doesn’t help that the detective on the case is someone who doesn’t seem to care for Chloe or her interference. Clues about Lana’s past surface and point to more than one suspect. The challenge will be to decide which one is the real killer.

REVIEW:
4 stars!

An exciting return to Whisper Cove!

While Easier Dead Than Drawn is the third book in author Bailee Abbott’s fun and artsy Paint By Murder cozy mystery series, it has enough backstory woven into the narrative so readers who are new to the series can easily catch up and enjoy the current adventure. (However, the entire series is charming and full of mystery and suspense and shouldn’t be missed!)

The Abbington sister sleuths, family, friends, and love interests all work together to solve the murder of Chloe’s former roommate, who is in Whisper Cove on a commission for the town to create a mural. Their need to catch the killer is critical as Chloe, having discovered the body of her friend, is one of the first suspects of the lead detective on the case.

The plot of the book, besides the murder and the women’s investigation, is enhanced by the conflict among the townspeople over a proposed new amphitheater: some absolutely want it, while some vehemently oppose it. The case focuses on a couple of promising suspects close to the artist, with plot twists that help rule out some or send the investigators in another direction. The resolution was accomplished in a unique manner, which was a great surprise. And, of course, the storyline features the sisters’ business of those fun group painting parties!

I recommend EASIER DEAD THAN DRAWN to cozy mystery readers, especially those who enjoy a craft-themed story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Bailee Abbott is a native Ohioan who spends her days plotting murder and writing mysteries. She's a member of Sisters in Crime as well as of International Thriller Writers. Bailee lives with her husband and furry friend Max in the quiet suburbs of Green, Ohio. Visits to Bemus Point, a town along the Chautauqua Lake in southwest New York inspired the setting for the PAINT BY MURDER mystery series. CHARACTER GUEST POST:

Now, for something really special, I am delighted to welcome MJ Austin Slatkin to the blog today for a guest post!

My Checkered History with Highwayman Art
by
MJ Austin Slatkin of the Cara Mia Delgatto Mystery Series

Ten years ago, I was accused of stealing an entire collection of Highwayman paintings owned by Essie Goldfarb. Even though I wasn’t in Florida at the time! I mean, come on? Seriously? I was at my mother’s bedside because she was dying. How could I have masterminded the theft of more than 40 paintings? Where would I have put them? And if I had stolen them, why didn’t I sell any of them?

My name is MJ Austin Slatkin. Once again, I find myself accused of theft. This time, Essie’s son, Irving, believes I’m using his real paintings to sell bogus copies and cheat him out of a little money. That man is a total idiot. Why would I do something so dumb? Why flood the market with cheap knock-offs when it’s taken years to build a reputation for excellence?

See, the Highwaymen started when a group of 26 African-Americans realized they could make more money by painting landscapes than by working in the fields. A trained painter named Beanie Baccus actually taught them techniques and encouraged them in their work. At first, they sold pictures with wet paint as fast as they could create them. The timing was right. Servicemen returning from the Korean War made use of the GI Bill to buy starter homes, and if you’ve got a house, you’ve got walls to decorate. With their unique love of a vanishing Florida, the Highwaymen fulfilled a need at reasonable prices. A few pieces went for as little as $25. Today they start in the thousand-dollar range. I appreciate what it means to be self-taught. I’ve worked really hard to learn everything there is to know about vintage Florida furnishings. Why would I undercut the efforts of someone in a similar situation?

Fortunately, my boss, Cara Mia Delgatto, has my back. Cara can be difficult at times. She has a temper. She gets involved when she sees injustice. But she’s the best boss I’ve ever had. All right, I’ll be candid: She’s also a terrific friend. I know Cara will get to the bottom of this mess. When she does, I’ll be back in business, selling Highwayman art.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Joanna is a New York Times Bestselling, USA Today Bestselling, and Amazon Bestselling author as well as a woman prone to frequent bursts of crafting frenzy, leaving her with burns from her hot glue gun and paint on her clothes. And the mess? Let’s not even go there.

Otherwise, Joanna’s a productive author with more than 80 written projects to her credit. Her non-fiction work includes how to books, a college textbook for public speakers, and books of personal essays (think Chicken Soup for the Soul).

Currently, she writes six fiction series: The Kiki Lowenstein Mystery Series (Agatha Award Finalist, contemporary, St. Louis setting, crafting), the Cara Mia Delgatto Mystery Series (contemporary, Florida setting, DIY, and recycling), the Jane Eyre Chronicles (Daphne du Maurier Award Winner, 1830s England, based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic), the Sherlock Holmes Fantasy Thrillers (late 1800s, based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s books), the Tai Chi Mystery Series (featuring a mature female amateur sleuth!) and the Friday Night Mystery Series (set in Decatur, IL in 1986 with a spunky female heroine.)

A former TV talk show host, college teacher, and public relations specialist, Joanna was one of the early Chicken Soup for the Soul contributors. She won a Silver Anvil for her work on the original FarmAid concert to benefit farmers.

In her ongoing quest never to see snow again, Joanna lives with her husband and their Havanese puppy, Jax, on an island off the coast of Florida. You can email her at jcslan@joannaslan.com or visit her website at https://linktr.ee/jcslan.
