Maeve Hawthorn writes about witches for a living.
They want her to stop.

When a book signing ends in her abduction, Maeve’s only priority is escaping with her corgi, Mischief, alive. That urgency deepens when she learns her captors are real witches, furious that Maeve has been exposing their secrets to the world.

Before Maeve can make sense of how her fiction has become reality, she’s caught in the middle of a murder that leaves her marked by magic she doesn’t understand. When a dying witch’s power floods into her, Maeve becomes the prime suspect in a crime she didn’t commit—and a target for every supernatural being certain she knows too much.

Turns out, magic isn’t a gift. It’s a liability. And clearing her name may cost Maeve far more than her safety.

With danger closing in and no clear allies other than Mischief, Maeve must navigate a hidden supernatural world that wants her silenced… or dead.

For readers who enjoy witchy mysteries with a little more at stake than a traditional cozy, Gossiping About Grimoires will appeal to fans of Danielle Garrett, Erin Johnson, and Juliet Blackwell.

They insisted.

As Maeve follows a trail of secrets through candlelit courtyards and hidden supernatural circles, she discovers that truth in this world is layered, political, and rarely convenient. Meanwhile, living with her roommates and their familiars begins to feel like home. The witches who were once strangers are becoming allies. Maybe even family.
But solving one mystery has a way of exposing others.
And in a city built on power and old allegiances, someone is always watching.
For readers who enjoy witchy mysteries with a little more at stake than a traditional cozy, Verifying About Vampires will appeal to fans of Danielle Garrett, Erin Johnson, and Juliet Blackwell.

Book Review: Murder Under Redwood Moon (Murder, Tea, & Crystals Trilogy, #1) by Sherri L. Dodd

Murder Under Redwood Moon (Murder, Tea & Crystals #1)Murder Under Redwood Moon by Sherri L. Dodd
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Magical and suspenseful!

Murder Under Redwood Moon is the first novel in author Sherri L. Dodd's cozy paranormal mystery trilogy, Murder, Tea, and Crystals, and is an exciting introduction to the magical and suspenseful story of Arista Kelly, a young witch just coming into her powers – powers passed down in her family from generation to generation and coveted by a close family member.

After the loss of her parents as a child, Arista was taken in by her father's aunt, Bethie, and taught about herbs, crystals, nature, spells, and natural magic to prepare her for the day when her own powers would manifest. She grew up in the quiet mountain town of Boulder Creek, with lifelong friends who still reside nearby. But when one of her friends from middle school disappears and is later found murdered, and then other young women Arista knows are also targeted, she and her aunt protect themselves the best way Bethie knows. Still, Arista may have attracted a serial killer's attention.

Arista, the main character, is a positive personality, always looking on the bright side and giving people the benefit of the doubt. From the start, you know she is about to come face to face with the dark side of humanity, including that which resides within her own flesh and blood.

From its unnerving opening, a literal parent's nightmare, the suspense builds. But while maintaining this tension, the author must handle the heavy lifting of creating the world in which these characters exist, and the complex, multi-layered plot unfolds. Dodd quickly populates a small town and Arista's past and current relationships, and that is a lot of information to take in. But along with vivid, living, breathing imagery, I think she pulls it off and gives readers a solid sense of the place and the people who live there. But even as the world-building unfolds, the plot moves briskly, and I found myself really engaging with Arista and the story, staying up late to reach the exciting resolution.

I recommend MURDER UNDER REDWOOD MOON to readers of paranormal cozy mysteries.

Book Review: Hummingbird Moonrise (Murder, Tea, and Crystals, #3) by Sherri L. Dodd

Hummingbird Moonrise (Murder, Tea & Crystals #3)Hummingbird Moonrise by Sherri L. Dodd
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Satisfying conclusion to this riveting, complex, and magical trilogy.

Arista Kelly and her Auntie Bethie have returned to Boulder Creek, California, and are settling back into a calmer lifestyle with their cats, gardens, tea, and magic, after their encounter with a serial killer and Arista’s Uncle Fergus the previous year. But just when they thought all that was behind them, the curse on the Kelly family rears its ugly head.

Hummingbird Moonrise is the third and final book in author Sherri L. Dodd’s riveting Murder, Tea, and Crystals Trilogy, and you couldn’t ask for a finer resolution. Arista and Auntie Bethie are a formidable pair, and no matter the twists thrown their way, they handle them.

There is a lot of story to wrap up, the plot is deliciously complex, so the action hits the ground running. I was all in right away, especially for what was going on with Iris: so many twists in her story! The curse her grandmother invoked against the Kellys takes center stage, though, and I was hooked on this book, eager to find out how it would all unfold. The author has quite a few surprises in store, yet still manages to create an ever-expanding cast of characters and craft a well-told, yet complex tale, with plenty of tea, crystals, folklore, and witchcraft to add to the delight.

The book is the culmination of many complex storylines that emerged over the course of the previous books; therefore, for optimal enjoyment, readers should complete those first. I recommend HUMMINGBIRD MOONRISE and the entire MURDER, TEA, AND CRYSTALS TRILOGY to readers of paranormal mysteries.

Paranormal Romance/Mystery
Date Published: July 1, 2025
Page count: 337 pages

SYNOPSIS:

Magic, mystery, and enemies-to-something-much-sweeter collide in this cozy paranormal romance full of heart, humor, and hexes.

Hazel Thornton is a small-town witch with a knack for brewing potions, botching spells, and annoying her grumpy werewolf neighbor, Blake Carter. But when a magical mishap leaves them trapped in each other’s bodies, they’re forced to work together—awkwardly, sarcastically, and very much against their will.

To make matters worse, Moonridge is on edge. Wolves are acting strange. Magic is going haywire. And beneath Hazel’s apothecary, something old and dangerous is waking up. As Hazel and Blake stumble through spellwork, supernatural politics, and a suspiciously perfect wellness guru with a shady agenda, one thing becomes clear: this body swap isn’t their biggest problem.

As Hazel and Blake race to reverse the spell, they uncover secrets that could tear the town apart. But the deeper they dive into the mystery, the more they realize their biggest problem might not be magic... it might be how much they’re falling for each other.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Avery Arujo is the pen name of a neurodivergent, painfully shy, and proudly introverted writer who has finally decided to dip her toes into the chaotic world of self-publishing.

Though she’s been quietly writing for years (mostly through anonymous fanfic and enthusiastic encouragement for other writers) this marks her first official foray into paranormal-romance-mysteries. (ParaRoMystery?) It was the quiet days of the COVID pandemic, the persistent voices of the Moonridge characters in her head, and the gentle (okay, sometimes pushy) insistence of family and friends that nudged her toward publishing.

Avery lives in the northern U.S., where it’s cold more often than not, with two opinionated dogs, and a significant other who is equal parts grumpy and lovely. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her watching trashy reality TV or reading with a blanket, a cup of coffee, and at least one pet trying to prove that they are more interesting than her book.

Book Review: A Witch Awakens (Fire Circle Mystery, #1) by Ellis Elliott

A Witch Awakens: A Fire Circle Mystery (Fire Circle Mysteries Book 1)A Witch Awakens: A Fire Circle Mystery by Ellis Elliott
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Strong, entertaining debut for this new Appalachian-set mystery series.

A Witch Awakens is the first book in author Ellis Elliott's new Fire Circle Mystery series featuring a disillusioned former dancer who abandons New York City to return home to Eureka Grove, Tennessee, to take over management of her grandmother's dance studio. When Jenny Newport, a long-time family friend and Cece's mentor, is murdered at a charity event, her grandmother's loyal handyman becomes suspect number one. Cece is drawn into the investigation to find justice for Jenny and clear Calvin's name.

This was a unique and cozy mystery featuring interesting and engaging characters and a distinctive setting infused with plenty of Appalachian legend and lore. Tennessee "Cece" Chagall is the main character and, though disappointed her dance career didn't go as planned, remains upbeat about her return home and only occasionally succumbs to a little self-pity.

Cece, however, has been dealing with another issue that has also prompted her to return to her roots; she has been having increased episodes where a random object triggers her to experience a smell, taste, or physical sensation. The occurrences, which only last seconds, have happened all her life. Her Aunt Granny (Grandmother's sister) called them her "peculiars," but they've never occurred as often as they are now. She hopes to get with Aunt Granny for answers to what is happening to her before resorting to another doctor and another MRI. Cece is relatable in her troubles, and I rooted for her determination to get to the bottom of what was behind Jenny's death.

The story moves quickly, especially for the first book in a series, where the author must introduce readers to the characters, their backstories, and relationships, as well as the new setting. Elliott easily handles the heavy lifting without bogging down the story. I liked that Cece's high school sweetheart was still in town but had become a detective with the local police department. While they were already running into each other around town, the murder forces them into needful proximity and a different dynamic between the two forms. Naturally, he warns her away from his investigation, and just as naturally, she pays little attention and starts her own. The resolution is surprising but makes sense.

I recommend A WITCH AWAKENS to cozy mystery readers who enjoy a touch of the paranormal in their stories.

Children's Book Review: Rufus and the Dark Side of Magic (Rufus and Magic, #3) by Marilyn Levinson

Rufus and the Dark Side of Magic: Rufus and MagicRufus and the Dark Side of Magic: Rufus and Magic by Marilyn Levinson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Rufus meets his Uncle Hector, a rich and powerful witch with an evil reputation whom he never knew existed, at the annual Samhain celebration.

Rufus and the Dark Side of Magic is the third book in author Marilyn Levinson’s fun and exciting children’s fantasy series, featuring 5th-grade magic initiate Rufus Breckenridge and his family and friends. When the Breckenridge family attends the annual Samhain night celebration, they are surprised when Hector, Rufus’s father’s brother, shows up during the evening’s fireworks display.

Rufus realizes Uncle Hector has come to the party looking for him even though they’ve never met before. Hector leaves after making eye contact with his young nephew; however, on the way home, Grandma Lavinia and Aunt Ruth caution Rufus to stay away from the evil witch, and for good reasons. But later that night, Uncle Hector makes another surprise visit, this time outside Rufus’s bedroom window.

Rufus finds his uncle charming and fun and is persuaded to pursue a relationship with him despite his family’s warnings and without his parents’ knowledge. Uncle Hector has a beautiful estate but soon expresses some ideas and uses some magical spells that are contrary to what Rufus has been taught are right. But has Rufus gotten too close to his uncle to come clean with his family and escape his evil demands?

Except for his magical gifts, Rufus is the epitome of what regular fifth-grade boys are like, and it was easy to understand how he was persuaded to disobey his parents and embrace the lavish lifestyle his uncle offered him. He is tempted to try out spells on his friends, even though he knows it is wrong to take advantage of them in this way, and crossing that line causes him to rethink his choices. Young readers will find the relationship between Rufus and his little sister, Griselda, relatable, and even younger children will be able to understand the lessons presented in the book when read aloud. The chapters are short enough to provide easy stopping points, and even though this is the third book in the series, the story can be read as a stand-alone. Readers new to the series should have no trouble jumping into the story at this point.

With its themes of friendship, respecting boundaries, the use of power, and respecting parental rules, there are numerous opportunities for further discussion and enrichment. I recommend RUFUS AND THE DARK SIDE OF MAGIC to upper-elementary and middle-grade fantasy readers.

SYNOPSIS:

Modern witches from rival factions. A marriage of convenience. Spells and sparks fly in this slice-of-life fantasy romance.

Whittaker Crawford is the perfect winter sorcerer—practical and self-reliant—but his quiet life is turned upside down when his grandfather gives him an ultimatum. If he wants to inherit the ancestral home he’s spent years restoring, he has to get married. In need of cheering up, his friend convinces him to do something dangerous: crash a summer witch party.

Clover Bronwen is an average summer witch—free-spirited and optimistic. But lately she has longed for a change. A masked stranger at a Halloween party is just the sort of intrigue she’s looking for.

The centuries-old feud between the summer and winter factions may no longer be an all-out war, but their rivalry and disdain are still very much alive. As Whit and Clover adjust to one another, their bonds with family and friends fray. How much are they willing to sacrifice for an enemy they just met?

With a sudden gust of wintry wind, the warm campfire was blown out, and everyone was plunged into darkness.

Gasps and murmurs traveled through the group. “A bad omen,” someone whispered near Whit over the sound of Alexandre’s snickering.

Of course, Alexandre wasn’t about to let an opening like that go.

“Don’t worry,” the Swedish Chef said. “Even the darkest night comes to an end. Take the hands of those on either side of you.”

Whit took Alexandre’s hand and squeezed it in warning. That’s enough. Even if their magic is waning, they could mess us up with this many of them here. We aren’t at full power either.

Whit stiffened as a jolt ran through him when the woman on his other side slipped her hand into his.

Her hand was small and thin but warm.

“Fear not the darkness, fear not the night,” the Swedish Chef said.

Everyone else, including Whit and Alexandre repeated his words.

“We spark this fire with inner light.”

As everyone repeated the spell, the magic of the summer witch holding Whit’s hand flowed into him. It was heady and intoxicating like a humid rain in a garden bursting with violets, lilies, orchids, and gardenias. The sweetness of honey and plum were mellowed by the depth of amber and vanilla. Whit’s head spun as her magic filled him with giddiness.

He turned his head toward her while the fire sparked back to life, reawakened by the collective magic.

Her face tilted up at him, and their eyes met in the dim flicker of the fire’s glow.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

D. Lieber has a wanderlust that would make a butterfly envious. When she isn’t planning her next physical adventure, she’s recklessly jumping from one fictional world to another. Her love of reading led her to earn a Bachelor’s in English from Wright State University.

Beyond her skeptic and slightly pessimistic mind, Lieber wants to believe. She has been many places—from Canada to England, France to Italy, Germany to Russia—believing that a better world comes from putting a face on “other.” She is a romantic idealist at heart, always fighting to keep her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds.

Lieber lives in Wisconsin with her husband (John) and cats (Yin and Nox).

REVIEW:

5 stars!

An “opposites attract” spark sets off a delightful slow-burn romance in this magical marriage of convenience tale!

The Winter Sorcerer and the Summer Witch by D. Lieber is an absolutely delightful tale combining an ‘opposites attract’ and slow-burn romance with a marriage of convenience storyline. I enjoyed this book so much that I’m still smiling about it days later!

Winter sorcerer Whittaker “Whit” Crawford must marry before the upcoming winter solstice, or his grandfather is going to change his will and leave the ancestral home, the only home Whit has ever known and has lovingly restored room by room, to a cousin with children. As all the winter witches he’s familiar with tend to be very cautious, careful planners and loath to make any decision without time-consuming deliberations, time Whit doesn’t have, he puts his chances of marrying one before the deadline as slim to none. Depressed and in need of cheering up, Whit and his best friend secretly crash a Halloween party in the woods held by the summer faction. There, he rescues a summer witch named Clover from the annoying attentions of one of the other guests. He is surprised and intrigued when she rewards his actions with a kiss. The next day, he begins to wonder if Clover Bronwen might be the answer to his problems.

Clover and Whit are an adorably fun and relatable pair, both with hopes and dreams that aren’t much different from each other, although she’s sunshiny and spontaneous while he’s deliberate and far from impulsive – usually. They are perfect for each other. Their interactions, as they got to know each other, made me smile from the start, and I was all in for them to overcome all obstacles on their way to a happy ending.

While the plot has all the earmarks of several romance tropes, they are combined with an unusual backstory that makes them feel fresh, fun, and exciting. The existence of two factions of magic users, based on the seasonal solstices of winter and summer, was an intriguing element that set up a wildly different “mixed marriage” scenario. Their slow-burn romance progressed at a pace that kept me completely engaged, making me read “just one more chapter” again and again.

I recommend THE WINTER SORCERER AND THE SUMMER WITCH to romance readers who enjoy a paranormal element in their stories and fresh takes on the opposites attract, sunshine/grumpy, marriage of convenience, or slow-burn romantic tropes.

Book Review: Moonset on Desert Sands (Murder, Tea, and Crystals, #2) by Sherri L. Dodd

Moonset on Desert Sands (Murder, Tea & Crystals - A Trilogy Book 2)Moonset on Desert Sands by Sherri L Dodd
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was invested from start to finish!

Moonset on Desert Sands is the second book in author Sherri L. Dodd’s mystical and mysterious series, Murder, Tea, and Crystals, and I was invested in the story from its shocking opening scene to its close, wanting to know everything about these characters, their lives, and how they got to this point. After escaping a serial killer the year before, Arista is living quietly in Sedona, Arizona, but, nonetheless, finds herself the target of her Uncle Fergus. This story continues the plot from the series debut. For the best understanding and enjoyment, the books should be read in order of publication.

I really like the character, Arista, and enjoyed learning about the shop in Sedona, crystal lore, her use of teas, and right off the bat, her interest and growing skill in seeing and understanding auras. These topics are totally outside my wheelhouse, other than what I’ve encountered in other books featuring witches, so it was an interesting and fresh underlying theme for me. After the events of the previous book, Arista has healed quite a bit but is still dealing with her feelings and heartache. She is surrounded by other well-developed and diverse characters, who help create a vivid sense of her community and leave very strong impressions, both good and bad, depending upon their role. I easily became invested in their stories despite being at a disadvantage, having not read the first book.

The story grabbed my attention from the start with an exciting and shocking opening. The author’s descriptions put me smack in the middle of the action with all its accompanying foreboding and terror; I was hooked for the long run. The author weaves in references to the past throughout the current story, but I really had to tease these bits out to understand the current developments. However, with its non-stop action, robust descriptions, and engaging characters, I soon couldn’t put this book down, and, with its conclusion of possibilities, I plan on backing up and reading book one in order to be ready for the next.

I recommend MOONSET ON DESERT SANDS to mystery readers who enjoy stories with paranormal elements.

The luxury nightclub was stunningly beautiful. The chandeliers wept crystals, lush black rugs were made of some of the softest material Finch had ever stepped on, and the gentle golden lighting gave everything an expensive feel. Soft jazz music played from speakers in the ceiling, rounding out the ambience.

It was a place so fancy, even the perfectly spherical ice cubes in everyone’s drinks had pedigrees.

The clientele was also in a league of its own. The moment Finch took in a deep breath, he knew everyone here was supernatural in some way. While some looked completely human, magic radiated from them like heat off a heat lamp.

Plus, there was a werewolf behind the bar.

Not like the bouncer outside, who had to remain in human form. No, this bartender was a full-blown anthropomorphic wolf. He stood on two legs, his black fur lustrous over a body made of pure muscle. He wore a suit tailored for his lycanthrope body, his little vest a shade of gray that complemented his ebony fur.

He even had a tail hole in his pants, so his large and bushy tail could wag around, unhindered.

And the bar had clearly been built to accommodate a beast nearly eight feet tall. It was larger, more spacious, and made of material that wouldn’t easily be scratched by the man’s claws.

His long muzzle and pointed ears really gave him the silhouette of a wolf, but his dark eyes were alight with human intelligence. And having dark eyes was a good thing—only werewolves with red eyes could spread the lycanthrope disease. If this wolf lost his temper and bit everyone here, there was no chance of a werewolf outbreak. Oakland had had too many of those already.

The wolf’s ears shifted in Finch’s direction as Finch walked over. The beast turned to greet him with a fang-filled smile.

“Good evening,” the werewolf said, his voice rich and confident. “You seem familiar, but I don’t think I’ve seen many warlocks in these parts. Take a seat. I’ll pour you something smooth.”

REVIEW:

5 stars!!!

Adair Finch returns, and this time, he’s brought friends.

Chronos Warlock is the second book in author Shami Stovall’s wonderful paranormal mystery series, The Chronos Chronicles, and this follow-up may be even better than the debut! Finch forms a team to track down an old client’s erring wife, who turns out to be deep in debt at an exclusive Oakland gambling casino run by some shady redwood elves.

While fulfilling his bargain with the mischief spirit, Kull, to find her an appropriate human body to assume, they discover the body she selects is the victim of murder. But before they can figure out that story, Finch is approached by a client from his and his brother’s past. The man believes his wife is cheating on him, and Finch quickly finds that although the man is wrong, the wife is still in big trouble. As he and Kull investigate, they run across Enzo, a former star Oakland PD detective from the Finch brothers’ past, who faked his death after becoming infected by a werewolf, fearing the accompanying uncontrollable rage would harm his family or coworkers. Together, they work to solve the wife’s problem with the elves and find out who wants Kull’s new body dead.

The trio is a fine mesh of personalities, backstories, hopes, and dreams, with Finch as their understanding friend, mentor, and, at times, savior. All three have their sorrows and regrets, and there are several poignant moments as they deal with the results of their past choices, some quite emotional. I enjoyed each individual character for their strengths and willingness to be there for each other, and I loved their camaraderie and growth as a unit.

The plot device of rewinding time is fascinating, though, on occasion, I wished the rewind would begin at a point later in the story. However, it wouldn’t have served the plot to do so, and understanding this eased the repetition. Also, the author made great choices in varying the characters’ responses to each new iteration of the do-over just enough to keep things fresh and interesting and progressing forward quickly. There were some epic plot twists throughout that had me gasping and grateful for Finch’s ability to start the story over. I enjoyed this match-up of characters so much that I hope there’s another book in the works soon!

My heart stopped for a moment before resuming its work at double speed. I gulped. Now was the time for the truth. Seraphina stood up and walked to her desk; when she turned back, she held a photo in her hand. My heart was beating frantically as Seraphina held out the picture. I nearly didn’t take it. I suddenly wanted to live in ignorance, yet my body reacted before I could decide and took the photo. I looked at a woman who resembled me a great deal. She also had dark hair and green eyes, her nose was a bit longer than mine, and her lips were thinner. However, it was clear that she was my kin.

“Her name was Keira Shepard. Your father is still unknown; the coven thinks he was a human and unimportant to her. She never told anybody about him.”

Keira Shepard. A beautiful name that fitted her. I wanted to know everything about her, right now. “What do you know of her? Is her family an old witch family? Did she leave anything behind?”

“She was from an old family. To our knowledge, it had died with her until now. Her belongings went to the coven after her mother—your grandmother—died ten years ago. Her file states she could glimpse into the future. She was much into the second sight. If you want to, I can ask for the whole file, including the documentation about her going missing.”

“That would be splendid. Thank you.” I tried to say more, but my thoughts were spinning. I had the name and face of my birth mother and a thousand questions.

REVIEW:

4 stars!

Exciting beginning for this intensely passionate paranormal romance series.

The Nephilim’s Fate is the first book in author Eliza Hampstead’s War of the Nephilim paranormal romance series, and the action and passion are front and center, and oh so well done from the very start. A witch and a Nephilim have a fated connection but are barred from consummating their passion because intimacy between the two supernatural species is believed to be deadly fatal for both.

But who better to discover the validity behind the ancient beliefs than the main female character, Alissia Parker, who is a practicing research scientist with an entire lab at her off-hours disposal and a witch. Alissia was oblivious to her true nature; she was abandoned as an infant, adopted, and raised by mortals. It is Nate, a Nephilim, who clues her in on the presence of auras and their properties of identification, which reveals her to be a witch and delivers her to the helping hands of the local coven. Although having to keep his desire for Alissia in check constantly, Nate is literally sex on legs and the man of Alissia’s dreams. The passionate scenes in their dreams are spicy-hot but turn to frustration when they are unable to fulfill their desires in person or face certain death.

The plot is robust, with a mysterious backstory for Alissia’s origins, the doubly forbidden romance (the danger and the prevailing attitudes of their people), and the resulting consequences of their love. The author’s choreography of ‘action’ scenes is extremely well done. These scenes are vividly described and without pretense. In addition, there are engaging, well-developed secondary characters, some of whom are featured in later books in the series. Thankfully, the subsequent novels are already available because this story has a cliffhanger ending that many will want to follow up on without delay. As a bonus, right now, those who sign up for the author’s email newsletter receive a short story featuring Nate’s Nephilim brother, Mike, and Alissia’s gal pal, Charlie.

I recommend THE NEPHILIM’S FATE to readers of spicy paranormal romance. Sensitive readers should note this book contains potentially difficult topics and scenes that may be outside their comfort zone, such as graphic violence, SA, rape, and very graphic language.

Chapter 1

A breaking news alert flashed on the TV screen as I bit into my bagel.

As the reporter stood by, the camera panned over to the lifeless body of a young woman hanging from a tree branch. “Witch” was carved into her gray, blood-stained forehead. He sighed and hung his head. “A seventh victim has been added to the list.”

I shoved my bagel aside as a sick feeling gripped my stomach. My heart ached as I stared at the girl’s lifeless face. How could someone be so cruel and sadistic? This was not just a random act of cruelty. And where were the police in all of this?

My mom walked in, grabbed the remote, and shut off the TV.

“I was watching that.”

“There’s no need to watch some sicko murder young women. Life’s too short to fixate on people like that.”

“I’m not fixated,” I clarified. “I’m concerned. There’s a difference. That’s seven girls now. Each with the word ‘witch’ carved into their foreheads. What are the police doing? Nothing?”

She blew me off. “Investigations take time. The police are doing everything they can. Your dad and I see a lot of accidents at the hospital. Sadly, crime is a real thing. But you,” she kissed my forehead, “don’t need to worry about that. Your focus should be on college and the class you need to get to.”

Mom was wrong. I had to worry. The creep pursued young women, specifically witches, a trait I shared and kept to myself. While my parents were blue-eyed and blonde-haired, I had pitch-black hair and brown eyes, and I also had strange birthmarks covering my forearms. It might seem like I have a tragic story, but I believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe I was destined to be abandoned outside the hospital where my adoptive parents worked. As they headed home after a long shift, they heard a faint cry near the emergency entrance. Rushing to investigate, they found me abandoned on the front steps, bundled in a pink blanket. As fate would have it, they immediately took me in and showered me with love.

As a baby, a toddler, a teen, and now at 19, a college student, they never saw me as anything but sweet, curious, sulky, and smart. They had no idea what I was hiding, the power I perfected, the spells I practiced, the magic I shed. In their eyes, I was like them. I knew I was someone beyond their comprehension, someone powerful. But who was I? Who were my birth parents who should have taught me how to use the gifts given to me at birth? The only information I had about my past came from visions—an image of a dark figure dropping me outside the hospital. There were no records of my birth, my parents, a location—as if I never existed. Bringing my questions to my adoptive parents wouldn’t do any good. They’d kept these secrets hidden from me. In spite of me knowing the real truth, my adoptive parents provided a birth certificate, giving me the name, Raven Sagestone. I love them, but I want answers. I wanted to know the truth, and it was clear it wouldn’t come from them. This was something I had to figure out for myself.

I put on my cropped denim jacket, kissed my mom on the cheek, and hit up Uber on my cell. My driver’s tests were a total disaster. I failed every time. It creeped me out when the instructors stared at me with their beady eyes. So…my driver’s license was out, and Uber was in. Having someone else do all the driving was a much better plan, for now anyway.

Forty minutes before class, the Uber driver dropped me off in front of the massive steps leading up to entrance of Granite Bay University. It was one of the oldest schools in Jodence, like something straight out of a fairytale. Its structure was reminiscent of a castle, with its towering columns, decorative arched windows, and cone-shaped roof; yet modern-day people dressed in jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers surrounded the ancient building—me being one of them.

In the past fourteen weeks, my daily agenda had consisted of visiting the library before class and researching its extensive collection of witchcraft, magic, and supernatural books. One of those books was certain to contain the answers to my birthright. I absorbed every word I came across about soul-bending, mental conjuring, healing rituals, protection rituals, binding magic, and the lore of fire, water, and air. One of the most fascinating things I discovered was the witch’s mark. It has likely been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. However, between the 15th and 18th centuries, it had a much darker history than it does now. Witches were often burned, hanged, drowned, and tortured, and those with red hair and extra fingers and toes were often suspected of witchcraft. Witch hunters used moles, birthmarks, scars, and extra digits to identify witches. It was a myth that a particular god or bloodline was associated with the presence of a mole cluster or rose-colored mark. My arms were covered in black symbols like ancient ink, and neither a cluster nor a mark applied to me. Thank goodness I wasn’t born back then.

With my arms full of books, I walked beneath the library’s massive brick archways, combing its numerous aisles for books I hadn’t read. When I rounded the corner, I tripped over a guy sitting on the floor. My books flew through the air and landed with a thud. I groaned as I hit the ground, hoping I had not damaged my books. The guy on the floor, on the other hand, quickly sprang up and apologized profusely.

His hands steadied me as he blurted, “Whoa, sorry.” He helped me gather my books and ensured I was okay. An adorable smile swept along his lips as he brushed sandy-brown hair out of his hazel-colored eyes. He was probably one of those guys unaware of how cute he was, but cute or not, he’d parked his ass in the middle of the aisle, causing me to trip.

“What the hell, dude? There are tables to sit at and read.”

“Yeah, I see your point,” he grinned, revealing dimpled cheeks as he flipped through the books. “So you’re into witches? Or maybe it’s research for a paper about what’s going now right now?”

“Does it matter?”

He squished his eyebrows together and tilted his head to the side. “Do you know my sister?”

“Huh?”

“Never mind.” He tucked the books under his arm and bobbed his chin toward the tables. “Here, let me help you. It’s the least I can do.”

With a smile, I accepted his offer. “Thank you.”

He arranged the books on the table before shoving his hands into his pockets. Then he stood there, studying me.

“Stare much?”

“Has anyone told you, you’re difficult?” He didn’t wait for me to respond. “But hey, I apologize for staring.” He spread his fingers and moved them in a circular motion over my face. “You remind me of someone, Eve. She’s got the same dark hair, ivory skin, and red lip look.”

I shrugged. “I don’t know anyone named Eve.”

“Hmph.”

The sound of a distant scream sent chills down my spine. My eyes darted around, searching for the source. “Did you hear that?”

“That was definitely a scream.”

Students leapt from their seats, hurling books onto the floor as their gazes swept the room. Librarians abandoned their posts and spilled into the aisles. Panicked voices shouted, “Who screamed?” “What happened?” Me and the guy were thrown into madness by a stampede of people charging to the exits and pushing us out of the building and onto the library’s steps.

The echo of my thumping heart filled my ears as I tried to figure out what was happening around me. The once orderly campus had become a chaotic mess as hundreds of people rushed by, pushing and shoving, their faces filled with panic. As I fought my way through the crowd, I couldn’t help but wonder where everyone was going and what had happened to cause such chaos.

“There!” the guy pointed toward the sculpture of the university’s tower in the courtyard.

I gasped as my eyes landed on the bodies. Three girls hung from the white tower with their necks bound together, now covered in blood. As I looked at their lifeless eyes and saw the word “witch” carved across their foreheads, a chill ran down my spine. An eerie, tragic, and horrific scene surrounded the stained white tower. As students and teachers huddled together, whispering in disbelief, a shrill of sirens echoed in the distance, intensifying panic and fear. Police authorities were under pressure to find those responsible for these horrific acts.

“Damn, three this time,” he uttered with shock.

I couldn’t speak. My throat swelled with a huge sob as I slowly shook my head.

The police rushed in, their footsteps pounding the sidewalk as they raced toward the tower. Their faces were determined as they cautiously approached the cordoned-off area. They quickly pulled out their clipboards and meticulously documented the evidence, taking photographs of the area.

An officer, wearing an exasperated expression, yelled. “Get back! This is a crime scene.”

I flinched, staggered backward, before firmly planting my feet on the ground. I wasn’t going anywhere. This was my battle. I needed answers. Those poor girls needed answers too. My eyes grew wide as I demanded, “Why don’t you find this sick creep before we all die?”

The guy’s gaze burned into my flesh as he snapped his head toward me. “What are you doing?”

The officer thrust his shoulders back and barked out, “You need to step back.”

“Are you trying to get arrested?” the guy whispered in my ear.

Just as his words entered my head, I overheard someone say, “They’re ice cold; not a drop of blood in them.”

My eyes locked on the authoritative policeman. “Blood? Is that new? Were the other girls drained of blood too?”

A pair of squinted eyes glared at me. “You can retreat or go downtown and think about your actions in a jail cell.”

“Omgeez, man up much?” the guy said as he grabbed my arm and hurried me away. “You need to calm down.”

I tore my gaze away from the dead girls and locked it on him. “Don’t tell me what to do. You don’t know anything about me. I want answers for those girls.” And myself, I privately declared. “It seems nobody is fighting for them.”

“It might seem that way on the surface, but I’m sure they’re doing everything they can to help.”

“I wish I could believe that, but dead bodies keep showing up…” My voice cracked as the sob squeezing my throat broke free. My shoulders quivered, and I buried my face in my hands.

He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and softened his voice. “They’ll catch ’em. It’ll be okay.”

Sniffling, I sighed, “I can’t concentrate. I can’t be in class.”

“We can walk to The Grind, get a coffee, and just relax.”

I nodded and then hung my head as he led me away from the gruesome scene of dead girls.
