Book Review: Home to Comfort (Comfort & Joy Trilogy, #3) by Kimberly Fish #LoneStarLitHomeToComfort

Home to Comfort (Comfort and Joy Book 3)Home to Comfort by Kimberly Fish
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A fine ending to a fine trilogy!

Home to Comfort is the third and final novel in author Kimberly Fish’s warm and wonderful Comfort and Joy Trilogy, and it is a fine and satisfying finale to the story featuring Gloria Bachman and all the friends she’s made in her new hometown of Comfort, Texas. With its community of engaging characters and plot that deftly wraps up storylines that have carried over from previous books in the trilogy, this was the story I’d been waiting for. I didn’t want to put it down, almost reading it in one enjoyable session.

The main character, Gloria Bachman, is an older woman, formerly a bank president, who is now the owner of her own chocolate business and retail shop, Sweeties. Having been ousted from her lifelong banking career under a manufactured cloud, she had relocated to the Hill Country town of Comfort, Texas, and bought a charming cottage and a storefront on the main drag of downtown. She’d also met the man of her dreams in Mason Lassiter, a wealthy Dallas department store owner. After a busy year, she and Mason are vacationing in Mexico, courtesy of the FBI who are trying to lure Mason’s first wife out into the open and arrest her as part of a secretive, need-to-know sting operation.

I loved how Gloria kept her finger on her own pulse, checking and re-checking her feelings and perspective on her life, future, and the trajectory of her relationships, not only with Mason but with those in her periphery that have proven unreliable or unworthy: most specifically, her former best friend, Gardner Rogers. Gloria had been through the wringer in her past and was cautious of her still-healing heart. Like everyone, Gloria has insecurities and doubts, but the hallmarks of her personality are her confidence and ability to read people. These traits, along with her uncanny logic and intuition, serve her well when unraveling a mystery.

In wrapping up Gloria’s story, the book is presented in a couple of different parts, starting with an exciting mystery centered on Mason’s first wife, Patsy, who, years earlier, had faked her own death while they were vacationing at a resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Gloria accompanies Mason to an exclusive beachfront resort there where the FBI plans to lure Patsy out of hiding and arrest her. The rest of the story finds resolution afterward back home in Comfort, where Sweeties is striving to fulfill an important order for the actual White House. To add to the suspense and excitement, Gloria needs to uncover the underlying reasons for her former best friend’s betrayal.

Fish’s storytelling is superb, with compelling scenes, vivid descriptions that make you feel you’re right there with the characters and an abundance of dialogue that fairly sparkles with humor and good feelings. While I was prepared for the second-chance romance because of the previous books, I was surprised by some of Mason’s harsh and hurtful comments and attitudes directed at Gloria. I felt like they’d gotten well past that when their relationship had finally become a romance, and I think if I hadn’t read the earlier books, I would have been thinking, “Red flag, sister!” over and over. Gloria doesn’t put up with much from anyone else, and she was way more forgiving than I would have been, especially considering her leftover wounds from husband number one. However, this is one of those things that she and Mason have to work out as they face a life together. Ultimately, everyone and everything was in place for an HEA.

I recommend HOME TO COMFORT to readers of cozy mysteries with a romantic storyline or romance readers who enjoy a suspenseful element in their second-chance romance.

SYNOPSIS:

Elizabeth, a retired librarian, alone and unable to care for herself, is resigned to spending her remaining days in a nursing home.

Not long after her arrival, her vitality is awakened by Cary, a young attendant. Elizabeth discovers that his interests in literature, art and the way of life of a gentler era are in step with hers.

When Cary eyes a framed photo of a young Elizabeth standing with her horse, attractive and vivacious, he is drawn to her as he’s been to no other woman.

Haunted by memories of a domineering mother who forced her into a loveless marriage, she is nevertheless a romantic who still believes in love.

This uncommon liaison leads to a deep devotion that transcends all boundaries. Despite their vast difference in age, Cary’s tender warmth inspires Elizabeth to make a new start in life.

Cary returned with dinner in tow and a small surprise. He found that the table had already been set. An ample green napkin lay beside each white plate.

There was room on the table for the single, long-stemmed red rose that he had brought home for Elizabeth. Removing a narrow, tall vase from the cupboard, he placed the rose in the vase and set it in front of Elizabeth’s place setting.

It was then that Cary noticed that a small green cream pitcher in the center of the table was filled with cilantro. Lit votive candles in green glass holders added to the gracious and relaxing atmosphere. He paused in the middle of the kitchen for a moment, taking it all in.

Elizabeth wheeled herself into the kitchen.

“Wow! This is beautiful, Elizabeth. My only complaint is that you’re supposed to have the night off.”

“I do have the night off, dear, but I also try to maintain certain standards.”

Cary grinned. “I have noticed that, Elizabeth.”

“One simply must, Cary. If one begins eating food from plastic containers—or worse yet—from Styrofoam . . . ” She shuddered at the thought. “Then what’s next?”

Cary frowned to show Elizabeth that he was thinking hard, trying to find the right answer to her rhetorical question. “Let me guess—the downfall of Western civilization?”

“Something like that,” Elizabeth replied, smiling in spite of herself.

Cary proceeded to uncork a dry Vouvray that Elizabeth had chosen. He poured wine into each of the stemmed glasses, carefully placed the bottle on the table so that the label faced Elizabeth, and then sat down to join her.

When Cary was about to pick up his knife and fork, Elizabeth reached across the table and placed her hand on his. “Cary, I adore the rose. Thank you.”

Touching and tender May-December romance.

Certain Sensibilities is a contemporary women’s fiction novel by Sondra Rice Newman that tells the unique and touching love story of a May-December couple. While their age gap is extreme, these two kindred spirits, soulmates, have the courage to build a life together, knowing their time will be short but trying to make every day special and count.

Cary, the young male protagonist, is 34 years old when he meets 89-year-old Elizabeth Gardner, a new resident at the care facility where he works. They share common interests and certain sensibilities that draw them to one another and feel a connection unlike any either has ever experienced is forged. That connection allows them to open up to each other, showing their vulnerabilities, revealing unfulfilled hopes and unmet dreams, and confessing to past failures and indiscretions. Cary missed out on the opportunities to pursue his desired education and career, while Elizabeth regrets losing touch with a girl from her past to whom she feels she owes an apology. Together, they finally work to realize some of those desires.

The story is quiet and gentle and unfolds from both his and her point of view. The comfort they draw from having each other in their life is a joyful and satisfying tale. However, Elizabeth has some health struggles that both know she is not going to overcome, so each outing, conversation, and plan for the future has that knowledge lurking in the background. What begins as a meeting of the minds becomes a deep-felt and tender love. However, while they are as intellectually and emotionally close as a couple can get, their relationship never becomes sexually intimate. The story is a touching and emotionally satisfying treat.

I recommend CERTAIN SENSIBILITIES to readers of women’s fiction, especially those with an interest in older woman-younger man relationships and gentle end-of-life stories.

While growing up, Mom and I had a special tradition: every Friday afternoon, she showed me how to cook and bake her family’s recipes, some of them as old as 400 years. As soon as I could stand, she pulled up a stool for me, and I watched her prepare dishes from her native town in Oaxaca, Mexico, which had been passed down from mother to daughter for many generations.

Although she had to create a new home when she and Dad moved from Oaxaca to a suburb of Boston before I was born, she made sure that I would be well-prepared to pass on our family’s recipes to my children. My memories from elementary school are filled with rolling churros in cinnamon sugar, measuring out ingredients for our family’s secret mole recipe, and taking turns with Mom mixing sweet corn dough for tamales.

When I was in middle school, she stood right next to me as I simmered the sweetened milk for capirotada, the bread pudding my family ate every Easter, and nodded in approval as the deep aroma of cinnamon sticks, brown sugar, and cloves filled the air. The older I became, the more Mom expected from me in the kitchen, but there was one thing that never changed throughout the years: whenever we cooked and baked together, time stood still.

“Hello, and welcome to our lab,” Dr. Koslow said, radiating confidence and pride.

“Let me walk you through what will happen. You and I will go into the chamber and get comfortably seated in the two chairs. Adrian will hook us up to the monitors and, as we go through the synchronized-sound sequence, he’ll use the monitors to track everything that’s happening to our physical bodies. Physiologically, it will resemble sleep. But it’s not. Also, I can assure you that you will be in good hands. He and I have both done this many times.”

I wanted to believe him, and again I had the impression of a calm, steady pilot. But no matter what he said I still had that chattering sensation in my teeth and felt as if tremors were going off in my body.

I worried: Could I overcome my fears and do this? Or would I completely wash out? Would I get “out,” only to be unable to get back in? Connie had spent hours preparing me for this, showing me how to focus on my breathing and quiet my monkey mind, but… I still felt so utterly unprepared. And my questions persisted: How would I know Gregory? What would he look like? Would he see me? Could we touch? What if I didn’t want to leave?

Connie moved close to me and slid her arm through mine.

“I know you’re still scared,” she said. “Just trust the process and do the best you can.”

REVIEW:
5 stars!

Gut-wrenching but ultimately a story of hope.

My Dead True Love by author Kim Pierce unfolds the story of a woman who loses her beloved to a sudden and fatal heart attack in such a realistic manner that I connected to the main character like I knew her personally. The storytelling is pure poetry.

This is a book full of thick, palpable emotion, starting with a gut punch when Ann first hears of Gregory’s death. The description of her learning the news was so vivid and mirrored so closely my own experiences of that initial hearing of a personal loss that there was no way I was able to set the book down without reading to its conclusion. The story was absolutely compelling from start to finish.

Even as Ann begins her journey of loss and grief, she takes on the responsibility for the inevitable tasks and decisions that must be made after a loved one’s death. These are not easy, even if a death is imminent and long expected, but in her case, Gregory’s death is a complete shock. Her thoughtful consideration of what happens later on in the afterlife leads to more questions. Her search for the truth kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering where the story would go. Ultimately, though, the story is one of hope.

I recommend MY DEAD TRUE LOVE to readers who have questions and have lost someone they love.

Welcome to the hometown everyone wants to call their own.

Gloria Bachman, a retired bank executive, has eight weeks to flip a location on Comfort’s High Street into a boutique chocolate shop. Defying expectations for “women of a certain age,” Gloria rediscovers talents and a sharpening of skills. If only she could read people as well as she does a spreadsheet. Even with the renovation in good hands, the subsequent struggle to name the shop brings Gloria and her business partner into conflict with a shady citizen. While Gloria is capable of remaining in her retirement rut while opening a business, two competing social groups try to lure her into their networks, causing Gloria to wonder if she ever knew Comfort at all. A murder rocks the community and revives investigative instincts honed by years in the banking industry.

Mason Lassiter, a disgraced CEO, has his own dramas to escape and the offbeat town seems the perfect place to recover his self-esteem. What was to be a quick reversal of fortunes becomes a quest to right a deeply felt injustice. Fascinated by the women driving the energy of Comfort, he extends his stay to find out why the small town is the backdrop to their best tales. Tangling with his neighbor Gloria becomes his favorite pastime and the key to unlocking the mystery of his past—if he can convince her to trust him.

Chocolate and joy become the glue bringing an unlikely cast together, which just might change Gloria’s and Mason’s course for the better. With characters familiar from previous Comfort novels and introducing fresh names, Sweet Comfort will entertain those who like their stories seasoned with coziness and sweet, second chances.

5 stars!

Came for the chocolate, stayed for the relationships.

Sweet Comfort is the first book in author Kimberly Fish’s spin-off series, Comfort and Joy, and I can’t think of a more descriptive or appropriate moniker for the series. While I was initially attracted to the book because of the promise of gourmet chocolate, it was the characters’ relationships that pulled me deep into the story. This is one of the best buildups of the community of characters for a series that I think I’ve ever encountered.

The main character Gloria Bachman is a woman of a certain age and well-regarded in her adopted hometown of Comfort, Texas. She’s suffered some hard knocks in her life and career, but she’s a survivor. To her chagrin, perhaps, her younger women friends have seemed to have placed her on a pedestal, and she certainly doesn’t view herself in that light. They hold her in high esteem and aspire to emulate her take-charge and take-no-prisoners demeanor that got her to where she ended up: a bank president. I liked seeing her opening this new chapter in her life and trying something entirely different with her friend and business partner, Kali. Then it was also good to see an older woman exhibiting realistic attitudes toward a possible romantic partner and relationship.

Besides the second chance storyline, there is the chocolate business to drool over. And while I enjoyed every virtual morsel, I also liked all the details about renovating the old building slated to house the new shop. I appreciate all the research the author must have done before putting pen to paper. There is even a mention of the traffic snafu caused by the crane that was needed for some of the work! True to life. And there was still so much more that had me turning pages: the mysterious death of the estranged wife of the successful Dallas businessman, the murder of a local contractor, and of course, learning everyone in Comfort’s business. As always, it was fun to have a fictional story set in the very real town of Comfort, Texas.

The author’s writing style is easy to read yet compelling. I was immediately drawn into Gloria Bachman’s life and soon felt like I knew her and her many friends and acquaintances. The dialogue sparkled, with some real laugh-out-loud moments and situations that were Pure D entertainment. (Yes, we say that in Texas.)

Although this is the first book in this series, there are hints that certain characters or couples have backstories featured in the author’s previous works. However, I didn’t need to have read those to become immediately invested in this current tale. The bonus is that there is backstory gold just waiting to be discovered.

I recommend SWEET COMFORT to readers who enjoy women’s fiction, later-in-life and second-chance romances, cozy mysteries, chocolate themes, stories set in Texas, especially the Hill Country, and fans of the author’s previous novels.

Kimberly Fish has been a professional writer in marketing and media for over thirty years, with regular contributions to area newspapers and magazines. As an accidental historian, she wrote two novels, The Big Inch and Harmon General, both based on factual events in Longview, Texas that changed world history. Kimberly also offers a set of contemporary women’s fiction novels and novellas, based in the Texas Hill Country, that reveal her fascination with characters discovering their grit and sweet, second chances; all four of the novels have won distinguished awards. Sweet Comfort is her latest novel, the first book in the Comfort and Joy Trilogy.

READ AN EXCERPT:

Looking back to when I bought this house, I realize that I was bamboozled by the weather. I should have known better. A fool and her money are easily parted.

It was the kind of day real estate agents would trade their eyeteeth for. The air was still crisp, but the sun shone warmly, laden with promise for the long, lovely days beckoning just around the corner. Snow still capped the mountaintops, yet the grass was green and lush.

We approached a front yard, and I could see the wildflowers sprouting around the edges, forming sporadic beds of color against the imposing grey stone of the house.

Lost in my reveries, I forgot all about the agent beside me. She smiled as she switched off the engine. “Here we are. The lovely little cottage I told you about.”

“A drafty little money pit, to be sure,” said Tom from the backseat, a wide smile carefully plastered on his face as he spoke the words.

I started to regret having invited him along. Worried about understanding everything in Italian, and even more terrified about not understanding the local dialect, I’d asked Tom to join me on my house hunting. Now I was ready to strangle him.

To be fair, Tom had been honest from the outset about his lack of enthusiasm for my plans to purchase property in Abruzzo. He made those views abundantly clear on each house tour. Since the agent didn’t understand a word of English, he masked his caustic comments with a ridiculous smile. The routine was becoming old.

With the benefit of hindsight, perhaps I should have heeded Tom’s warnings. Back then, however, I was in no mood to entertain his negative thoughts. I summarily ignored Tom’s comments, instead concentrating my full attention on the little cottage from the passenger window. I unlocked the door and stepped out, breathing in the invigorating mountain air, the earthy smell of soil and grass freed from winter hibernation under thick layers of snow.

MY REVIEW:
5 stars!

Absolutely riveting story! I read it from cover to cover in one sitting.

In The Shadow of the Apennines, the new novel by Kimberly Sullivan, is the wonderfully mesmerizing story of a woman coming to terms with her life and future as everything around her implodes. Samantha Burke Thorpe is a believable and sympathetic character who makes some understandable and human mistakes when her life goes off the rails.

This poor woman is hit with a double whammy; her professor husband of 24 years leaves her for one of his Ph.D. students, and she loses the job she loves all in the space of months. Either of these events would be devastating enough, and I ached for this woman. Samantha isn't weathering these blows from a position of power, either. She's pretty much subjugated her own dreams and personality to reflect her successful husband's glory, so there is an introspective look at her past and how she got to where she is as the novel opens. She has regrets and doubts and questions how things would have turned out if she'd made other choices in her life. Then the surprises start, and plot twists keep coming.

The story is that of two women, Samantha in the present day and Elena, a prior occupant of the cottage, at the start of World War I. Elena's story is revealed to Samantha through her discovery of Elena's journals. I loved the parallels between the two women's lives (and the similarities between their mothers' experiences.)  The details and tidbits of the area's history and time period were fascinating.

Set in the fictional village of Marsicano in the Apennine Mountains of Italy, you can almost breathe the mountain air, much like each newcomer to the area notes. The descriptions of the village, the mountains, and some of the locations Samantha visits had me wanting to plan a vacation right away. The story was even set at the same time of year when I was reading it (Christmas, winter), making it that much easier to visualize the locations. There are some great supporting characters, many of whom the main character alienates when she comes under the spell of social media success.

With an exceptionally relatable main character, an exciting and compelling setting, and an absorbing dual timeline plot, I recommend IN THE SHADOW OF THE APENNINES to readers of contemporary and historical women's fiction.
