Book Blitz: All That Remains by Samantha Grosser

All That Remains
Samantha Grosser
Publication date: September 15, 2026
Genres: Adult, Historical, Romance

A choice shaped by war. A life in its shadow. One last chance to make peace with the past.

1998. Eva Marlowe has never asked her husband if he regrets his decision – she isn’t sure she wants to know the answer. But when news arrives that his estranged son has died, she feels the foundations of their marriage begin to shift beneath her. Then the funeral draws them back to Silverwood Hall where it all began, and she can no longer avoid the question.

1939. As Europe teeters on the brink of war, young socialite Eva Ravensby has been sent home from the Riviera in disgrace. Grounded at the family seat of Silverwood Hall, she chafes against the constraints of her upbringing, until her brother brings aspiring writer Ben Marlowe home for the summer.

Ben is utterly compelling. And wholly unsuitable. So when he asks Eva to marry him the night before he leaves for war, she refuses. Duty must come before love, and her father would never forgive her. But how can she possibly know the train of events her answer has set in motion? As the war takes its toll on them both, her refusal shapes their lives in ways they can never undo. Then, in the aftermath, an unexpected second chance arises. But the price they must pay for it is more than they could have imagined.

Now, decades later, as Ben grieves for the son he never knew, Eva faces the question she has spent a whole marriage refusing to ask: was she ever truly the life he chose?

EXCERPT:

On the day of the funeral, Eva drives with her signature brand of recklessness and skill. When they were young, the thrill of it was intoxicating: Ben can still recall with absolute clarity the heady feeling of that long ago summer before the war – an awareness of their youth and vitality and a belief in the wonders the future had in store for them. He had never felt so alive. But as he grew older and more aware of his mortality, each swerve and near miss became nothing short of terrifying.

Now, watching Eva in profile as she slams her palm with impatience against the steering wheel at a slow car ahead of them, he finds himself thinking it would actually be quite a fine way to go, wrapped together in tangled metal, a definitive end.

Eva lets out a curse as the column of traffic slows to a crawl and he quenches a smile, taking the opportunity to watch her a little longer. He will never tire of looking at her face, marvelling at the fine chiselled lines of her cheekbones and her jaw, the forget-me-not blue of eyes that are still as bright and clear as on the day they first met. She catches him watching her from the edge of her eye and turns her head.

‘Are you all right?’

Her question drags his thoughts reluctantly back to the purpose of their journey.

George’s funeral.

His son.

He shifts awkwardly in the seat of the car. The trousers of the wool suit are rough and itchy – it’s been a while since he’s worn it and his skin has become more sensitive with age. He stretches out as much as he can in the confined space and tries not to think about how stiff his hips will be after an hour and a half in the car.

‘I’m fine,’ he says, and they both know it’s a lie.

He’s still in two minds about going at all and with each successive roundabout they come to, it crosses his mind to ask Eva to drive right around it and take them back home. But he says nothing, and the Audi bears them in sleek leather comfort ever closer to their destination.

‘We don’t have to go,’ Eva offers, reading his discomfort with her usual clarity.

‘But you think I should,’ he replies, which is unfair, because they’ve talked about it endlessly in the days since the letter arrived and they came to the decision together. But he’s in no frame of mind to be reasonable. Anger seethes in his gut, bitter and relentless, and he only hopes he can contain it once they get there. Eva says nothing, eyes trained with uncharacteristic attention on the road ahead.

Abruptly, the anger slides into guilt. Such a pointless emotion, but he’s spent most of his life in its grip, one way or another. Guilt for dreaming and wanting more; for hurting people and for poor decisions; for living a life that is full of regret for what he lost instead of gratitude for all he has. He loves Eva desperately and always has, but he’s conscious he has not always been the best of husbands. He lets out a low sigh.

‘I’m sorry,’ he offers.

His wife flashes him a quick look of forgiveness, and he touches his fingers to where her hand rests on the gear lever. The last person in the world he wants to fight with is Eva.

The Sólhjarta Tournament

As the setting sun lit the evening sky and glistening fjord with brilliant shades of crimson fire, Brynhildr’s gaze wandered to the drakkar ship whose fierce blue dragon prow was etched with snarling silver wolves.

That is his ship. The fearsome warrior known as Sigurd Sea Wolf.

He’d caught her attention the very first day of the competition, for not only did he stand half a head taller than all the other warriors, his blue grey wolfskin cloak, shimmering in the summer sun, had given him the otherworldly air of a god. Deep blue gems glittered in his braided blond hair, pulled back from his rugged face and tied with leather at the nape of his corded neck. Lapis lazuli stones glinted in his golden beard, braided like his long thick hair. As Brynhildr had sat beside her faðir on the elevated dais to watch the competition, a sizzle of seiðr had shivered up her spine when he’d removed his wolfskin cloak and tunic.

Dark blond hair and blue tattoos covered his rippled chest, and for the first time in her entire life, Brynhildr had shared Astrid’s fascination for the spear-throwing event.

Even his spear had caught her attention.

The pale wood of his impressive weapon had been painted with blue swirling waves and silver snarling wolves, like his magnificent drakkar longship. And when he’d hurled the spear farther than any other competitor, a thrill of triumph had coursed through her veins, as if she had thrown the weapon herself.

That night, at the feast, her searching gaze had found him seated among the Sjórúlfar, the firelight in her faðir’s royal hall wreathing Sigurd’s wolfskin cloak in shimmery sapphire. He’d pierced her with fierce lupine eyes and seared her soul with a scorching smile.

All week long, she’d watched him. He ran more swiftly and swam more surely than the other warriors, as if he were indeed a Sea Wolf. Tonight, at the feast, her faðir would present gifts to the ten competitors—including Sigurd from Sjóborg—who had won the preliminary trials and would therefore advance to the next round of events in the Summer Solstice Tournament.

There would be a thrilling competition of three skálds, each vying for the prestigious title of Skáld of the Sólhjarta Tournament.

And after the bountiful feast, guests would dance around a bonfire beneath the stars.

Brynhildr’s legs trembled under her silk gown at the thought of being in the Sea Wolf’s arms.

If just looking at him sends shivers of seiðr up my spine, what will it be like to touch him?

A shudder of anticipation shook her whole body.

Dragonslayer’s Valkyrie: The Legend of Sigurd and Brynhildr

REVIEW:

5 stars!

A masterpiece of reimagining a Nordic folk legend.

Dragonslayer's Valkyrie: The Legend of Sigurd and Brynhildr is the debut novel in author Jennifer Ivy Walker's exciting new Viking Dragonslayers series, and is a masterful reimagining of a renowned Nordic folk legend. While retaining the bones of the ancient story, Walker's lyrical prose, attention to historic detail, and creativity make the tale her own.

Told in the alternating points of view of the two fated lovers, the story begins with Sigurd's final trial of ability, strength, stamina, and determination before he is enrolled in the ranks of the elite Sea Wolves of his stepfather, King Alfr. His successful narrative is followed by Brynhildr's introduction and her fantastical summoning of Freyja for the goddess's confirmation of Brynhildr's future as a shieldmaiden rather than the simpering prize of a tournament victor. These wonderful openings set the stage for what's to come and define their early strengths of mind and body.

Readers are treated to the innermost thoughts and desires of these two earnest and deserving young people, establishing their worthiness for what will become a legendary love story. The author excels at delivering meaningful thought processes and dialogue that sounds natural, authentic, and makes sense. However, the author's skills truly shine in incorporating perfectly appropriate, timely descriptions of settings, rituals, and the characters' daily lives without bogging the story down in minutiae. The research that must have been done is evident in the vivid, precise details organically blended into every scene.

Sigurd and Brynhildr's attraction blossoms into aching longing, and their union and fulfillment are accomplished openly as part of the story, so be prepared if full disclosure makes you uncomfortable. The same care used to depict daily life or religious ceremonies is applied to revealing the pair's emotional and physical relationship.

The plot moves at an exciting pace as the characters are introduced and the scenes are set. Sigurd's and Brynhildr's hopes, dreams, pride, and longing will become yours as events intervene between these two classic fated mates. If their story weren't legendary before, it certainly would be now.

I recommend DRAGONSLAYER'S VALKYRIE: THE LEGEND OF SIGURD AND BRYNHILDR to readers of historical romance, historical fiction, fantasy romance, and folktale retellings.

Book Review: The Last Perfect Summer by Karla Stover

The Last Perfect SummerThe Last Perfect Summer by Karla Stover
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As the country gears up for war, changes come quickly to small-town America.

The Last Perfect Summer by Karla Stover is a close-up view of an earlier time as war comes to a fast-changing America. Louise Tanquist, the adopted daughter of a successful Tacoma modiste, is building her own life and following her dreams of opening a photography studio by working for and learning all she can from the owner of a local business. But as the war that will become known as World War I gains momentum, life speeds up, new technologies and innovations are everywhere, and Louise is swept up in the changes and what they bring to her life and hometown.

Louise is an engaging, truly likable heroine, with solid hopes and plans to achieve them. A thoroughly modern young woman, she is involved in her community and the efforts to assist in the ongoing European war when President Wilson announces the United States is joining the fray. Life, as she knows it, is about to change forever.

The plot moves steadily forward as tragedy visits. The author’s attention to detail, physical and emotional, and the historical reconstruction of the time and place is an absolute marvel as the story is dotted with real people and actual places – an absorbing and satisfying creation of historical fiction.

I recommend THE LAST PERFECT SUMMER to readers of historical fiction, especially those with an interest in pre-World War I America and the early Pacific Northwest.

Her soft whisper caressed his wandering mind. “Skjöld…”

A pulse of magic tugged at his spirit, drawing him inexorably to her.

Skjöld raised his head and glanced at Haldor, asleep in his furs. Unable to resist Skadi’s call, he rose from his bed and slipped silently across the hearth room.

At the end of the dark hall—where violet and green northern lights swirled through the narrow windows of the cave—Skadi stood in a sheer white gown which clung to her alluring curves. Luminous with inner Ljósálfar light, her long blonde hair flowing in waves to her narrow waist, she appeared like a water goddess, haloed in violet ice. Gossamer sleeves cascading to the cold cave floor, arms outstretched to welcome him, she invited Skjöld to share the starlit night.

Limbs shaking with longing, he staggered down the hall, his breath caught between need and disbelief, until she drew him into her arms like a prayer answered. And ushered him through the door, into her moonlit room.

Her graceful fingers stroked his bearded cheek, her sizzling touch sending sparks up his spine and a current coursing through his veins. On the tips of her toes, she rose like a flame, engulfing him with desire as she brushed her lips against his.

Although Skjöld had been with several women—the Blóðsmiðr had insisted on making him a man at various Viking ports whenever they stopped to trade—he had never experienced the overwhelming sensations that flooded him as he lost himself in Skadi’s enticing embrace. He savored her taste as he plundered her lips, sweeping his tongue to probe and explore. Her scent inundated his senses, her essence calling to his, her spirit entwining with his own. As if caught in a maelstrom, he spiraled into her, in complete surrender.  Unanchored, unthinking, and undone.

REVIEW:

5 stars!

Magic and suspense as the time for the fulfillment of a prophecy approaches!

Falcon of the Faroe Islands is the third book in author Jennifer Ivy Walker’s Valiant Vikings trilogy and takes the story to an amazing pinnacle before coming to its absolutely stunning close. Warrior-vitki Haldor Falk prepares to return to Normandy and his one true love, Úlvhild, as soon as his young acolyte and the grandson of Harald Bluetooth, Skjöld, completes his final challenge on his journey to become a noaidi. However, the vision of the future the young man sees during the ritual warns of an imminent attack against a Dwarven stronghold, and they are compelled to respond, warning the Drarves and helping them in their defense; their future is tied to that of Haldor and Skjöld. So begins the chain of events that can lead to the fulfillment or failure of a prophecy foretold before Skjöld’s birth.

What a truly satisfying conclusion to this wonderful epic fantasy! The characters are unforgettable by their deep and abiding love, loyalty, and respect for one another. I could feel the powerful yearning Haldor carries for Úlvhild as he dreams of their reunion after eight years apart. She returns that affection in spades, and I ached for her as she saw what her love would compel her to do in the near future. The trilogy is full of intense love and deeply emotional connections between couples that last and last. As for newer relationships, the immediate chemistry between Skjöld and Skadi was delicious and palpable.

As the story comes full circle, the action moves from the far northern Scandinavian islands near the Arctic Circle to Normandy and Paris, France. The vivid descriptions of the settings make these ancient places come alive, and I felt as if I were there alongside the characters, whether on a remote island sitting around a campfire, in a mystical cave, on board a ship in rough water, or in a majestic, magical fortress.

The plot is well-paced with exciting action and battle sequences interspersed with more character-driven moments of tender romance, quiet introspection, longing, and the contemplation of sacrifices to come. By this third book, the magic foundation is well established and robust, consistent and well explained, so I had no confusion about how things worked or what to expect. I would have loved a glossary with a pronunciation guide for all the foreign terms, just because I’m fairly new to the myths and lore.

The author does a lovely job of weaving the basics of the previous two novels into this story so that it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. However, the earlier books were also 5-star reading experiences for me, and I believe they shouldn’t be missed. I recommend FALCON OF THE FAROE ISLANDS to readers of epic fantasies who enjoy paranormal elements and Norse legends and lore.

He wanted to catalog her injuries and soothe her pain. While Jack wanted to douse the fire in her lovely eyes. For that look alone, Elias put his foot in front of the man and gave Jack a shove.

Máira stepped forward in a futile attempt to catch the bastard, but was too late to stop his fall. Jack twisted his body mid-air, in time to keep his nose from hitting the floor. The muffled grunt he released caused Máira to flinch and a few men in the bar to raise their glasses to toast the nasty bugger’s predicament.

She turned on him, eyes flashing as if she suffered the same brutality. “Do you think treating a member of your crew with violence will earn my trust?”

“You don’t understand what he wanted to do to you.”

“The same thing you wanted to do to me?”

He snorted. “Not even close. I was defending your honor.”

Máira looked down at her torn and soiled dress, then lifted a limp curl from her shoulder. “You do it well.”

His guileless bride didn’t understand Jack’s evil intent, nor did she appreciate Elias’s manner of defending her honor. He ground his teeth. She was sizing him up like she had never done before, and he had to school the anger seeping through the facade of polite concern he’d worn since the moment she’d walked into the bar, and he’d seen her battered face. She knew the warm-hearted, polite Ellison Collins, Earl of Dorset, not Sir Elias Drake, ruthless killer, spy, and recovery agent for the Crown.

SYNOPSIS:

There is something rotting in Harrisville.

It's 1944 and Veronica works so she can afford to eat. Maybe one day she will save enough to own the home her family is living in, but for now, she doesn't have time for fanciful thoughts, or much else. She doesn't have time for the fire whispering to her, the ghosts trying to talk to her and the son of her boss, who can't stop staring at her. She definitely doesn't have time to think about Lazlo, the handsome black soldier that she processed at the draft office, but she can't seem to stop herself. As her ability to ignore Lazlo evaporates, so does her self-imposed ignorance about her hometown.

There is, and always has been, something rotten in Harrisville. It shouldn't have been a surprise. After all. Veronica works in the cigarette factory. where corpses hide in the tobacco with the roaches.

Veronica heard a rustling in the tobacco leaves nearby. A small, sickly raccoon tumbled out. Its fur was matted with dust, and it looked half-starved. It tried to run, but its back legs wouldn’t cooperate with the front, and the creature collapsed onto its side.

Veronica began to back away, keeping her broom pointed at it. For a moment the raccoon lay still, then it rolled over and struggled to push itself upright with its front paws.

She spoke to it softly, hoping to calm it—but at the sound of her voice, the raccoon bared its teeth and lurched toward her, scrabbling with its front paws while its limp back legs dragged behind.

She had almost reached the end of the aisle when a dark shape flickered beside the raccoon—a vaguely human shadow reaching for her. She jumped back before it could touch her. The spectre plunged into the raccoon. For an instant, shadow and animal merged—then the phantom vanished. The raccoon twitched, then its milky eyes fixed on her. In the next moment it was scuttling toward her, suddenly sure-footed and fast.

Veronica turned and ran toward the exit. She could hear scrabbling behind her, growing louder. She rounded a corner and saw the door ahead—but she couldn’t let the beast escape into the factory. Instead, she dove down another aisle and crouched low.

The raccoon skittered around the corner a heartbeat later. Veronica swung her broom and knocked its legs out from under it. The creature flew forward and slammed into a wooden post, sending a cascade of dry tobacco leaves crashing down onto it. Veronica bolted for the door and heaved it shut. A moment later something thudded into the other side of the door—again and again.

REVIEW:

5 stars!

A town on the brink and a love that shouldn’t be.

Fanning Fireflies is the third book in author L.S. Delorme’s riveting and mysterious Limerent series, and it may be my favorite of the three. Set in 1944, when the entire world is at war, Veronica Crane yearns for a young man going off to fight. But theirs is a forbidden attraction because he is black and she is white. In the meantime, weird things are going on in Veronica’s small hometown of Harrisville, North Carolina. Tensions are rising as an all-white, Clan-like organization is gaining ground and members, and Veronica is just trying to keep a low profile and avoid angering the wrong people. But she has a couple of special gifts, abilities only she and her people know about. One is the ability to see ghosts, and she’s seen more in town recently than in her entire life up to now.

Veronica’s story was gripping from the very beginning, and the author did a fabulous job placing me smack in the middle of the action with its vivid 1940s wartime vibe. The racial attitudes of the time hit hard, even as the author carefully avoids using some of the worst invectives of the day. The portrayal of gender behavior and attitudes is spot on and demonstrates why there are stereotypes. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is also clearly pictured, with Veronica making do with what little she has and often going without as she helps her mother and brother get by. But even those acquaintances of hers who were better off were still careful and well aware of how they used their resources. Most characters lived through the Depression before experiencing wartime rationing.

I absolutely enjoyed the magic and the legacy of the Furies; however, Veronica’s special abilities, handy as they turned out to be, were one more secret to keep. I know I’ve said this before in my reviews of the previous books, but the author must have my tastes and interests down to a T. I find her writing compelling and easy to get lost in. Veronica’s very realistic circumstances completely absorbed me. The supernatural and magical elements were creative, intriguing, and unpredictable.

While the story has a lot of characters to keep track of, I loved that some had been featured in the previous books. This novel, like those earlier, can be read and enjoyed without any problems as a standalone. Still, as the storylines are converging, and the first two books were 5-star stories for me,* I feel they should not be missed! I recommend FANNING FIREFLIES to readers who enjoy historical romances and adventures with a paranormal element.

Book Review: Under the Gulf Coast Sun by Skip Rhudy

Under the Gulf Coast SunUnder the Gulf Coast Sun by Skip Rhudy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A quick trip back in time to the beginning of a new young love.

Under the Gulf Coast Sun is a lovely historical romance by author Skip Rhudy and features the young adult surfing culture of mid-1970s Port Aransas on the Texas Gulf Coast and the beginning of one made-for-each-other couple’s relationship. Connor O’Reilly and Kassie Hernandez had met the previous summer when she and her family were vacationing in his hometown of Port Aransas. Hitting it off, they’d kept in touch when she and her family had returned home to Midland through heartfelt letters, sharing their hopes and dreams as they completed their senior year in high school. When summer returned, so did Kassie, an event that the shy, inexperienced surfer boy Connor had dreamed about all year. Now faced with the reality, he’s filled with self-doubt that this beautiful girl whom every guy in town wants would want him, believing instead that she is out of his league.

What a good story! Connor is a genuinely nice guy and falls hard for Kassie. But with his recent history, the departure of his mother with a lover to pursue her own dreams, which didn’t include her only son, he’s got trust issues. Watching other guys hanging around and trying to catch Kassie’s eye is particularly difficult for him.

Kassie, whip-smart and with a full-ride scholarship to UC San Diego in hand, is certain Connor is different from other guys, interested in her for their common interests and not just for her hot physical attributes. However, his differences could be a two-edged sword, and she worries that her interest in him could divert her from her plans for the future. Thankfully, they eventually talk about their concerns, but not before there is a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING that causes a course correction on their journey to a HEA.

Told from multiple points of view, readers are privy to the inside skinny on the characters’ thoughts, feelings, and true motives. There’s a bit of repetitive “is she really into me” thinking on Connor’s part, but that seems to be a result of the emotional fallout from his mother’s actions. Kassie both abhorred and enjoyed the attention her physical appearance attracted, but she was only 18 years old when navigating through this.

The plot includes a lot of interesting descriptions and discussions of surfing, surfing legends of the era, and Connor and Kevin’s work aboard the crew boat. Connor’s time in the Gulf is suspenseful, and I thought the author did a great job of not telegraphing how this scenario was actually going to work out. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The story has a lot of humorous moments as well, many centered around Kevin Stamford, but the party at the very beginning of the book had me laughing out loud.

Set as it is in the mid-1970s, these characters would have been my contemporaries, so I could relate to a number of things mentioned. Women’s roles were still in transition, and Kassie’s father’s warnings about what she could expect as a woman in a university science program were accurate. Even the assumption that women would naturally consider higher education at that time would have been false. But other aspects of the “historical” (really?) setting were fun and nostalgic, such as the music, the lower drinking age, and no cell phones, to name a few.

With its engaging characters, authentic descriptions, realistic dialogue, and suspenseful plot, I recommend UNDER THE GULF COAST SUN to readers of historical fiction and romance.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT:

She straightened her spine and turned to her husband. “I’d like for us to retire at the same time tonight.”

There was a sharp pause, almost imperceptible though it stood out in the slight flinch of his hand and the rustling sound the paper made in response. A less perceptive person would have missed it, but Samantha took note.

A smile formed on his face – gentle and warm – while strong emotion filled his gaze in a look so intense it stole her breath. It seemed like forever since he’d looked at her in that way.

“Am I to understand that you’ve an interest in bedsport, Mrs. Croft?”

She forced herself to hold his gaze. “It’s past time, wouldn’t you say?”

“Perhaps.” He was studying her, she realized then, like a cat might study a mouse, as though trying to figure out whether to toy with it a little or simply pounce. Leaning back, he set his paper aside, sipped his coffee, then stood. “Let’s discuss it later. When I’m not on my way to an important meeting.”

And there it was – the avoidance he hid beneath layers of seeming affection and consideration. She saw it now, even as he bent to press a kiss to her cheek, as he told her how lovely she looked and wished her a pleasant day. There was a distance between them, a line he’d no wish to cross.

It felt like a large crevice, and she’d no idea how to breach it.

“Why don’t you meet your friends for luncheon?” he suggested, his hands on her shoulders as he stood behind her, thumbs gently massaging. “Then you and I can visit the Hunterian later. How does that sound?”

As though the width of the crevice might be decreasing. “Wonderful.”

He kissed her again and departed, leaving her with a flicker of hope. Their last outing had taken place the day after their wedding, when they’d gone to the theatre. It would be nice to have another, a chance to focus on each other and reconnect.

Especially given the decision she’d made upon her marriage to turn her back on Harlowe and Kendrick. To instead protect her husband.

She doubted her former guardian or the chief constable knew she’d taken Adrian’s side in the end – that she would guard him against their plan to use her against him – a plan now putting the two men at odds.

Despite Harlowe reminding her on her wedding day that she had to locate Adrian’s files and discover the names of the people listed there, he’d since told her she was to pause in her mission.

Kendrick, however, insisted she stay the course. He wanted her to link Adrian’s name to blackmail threats made against high-ranking individuals, aid offered to criminals, smuggling operations, and whatever else could help build a case against him. Preferably something that would help put Adrian away for good. Or see him hanged. It went without saying that she would do no such thing. The man she’d married had proven himself to be someone she greatly respected and admired.

She would never betray him.

REVIEW:

5 stars!

Another killer is on the loose in London!

A Tainted Heart Bleeds is the second book in author Sophie Barnes’s dark and moody House of Croft historical mystery series, and as before, another killer is loose among the ton of London. Only four months after Lady Evelyn Croft’s murderer was dealt with, another young debutante is murdered in her own home. The girl’s distraught father is bent on revenge and implores Adrian Croft to find the person responsible for her death. Great characters, an exciting, complex plot, and an atmospheric London setting combine to make this book one you’ll not want to put down until you know all the answers!

Samantha and Adrian Croft are newlyweds, but their pre-wedding passion abruptly disappeared before they consummated their marriage. Samantha is guilt-ridden over keeping secrets from her new husband and fears his change in demeanor means he’s found out all about her mission to gather intelligence that would lead to his arrest and execution. Adrian, determined to break free from his criminal past, had counted on Samantha to help him leave that part of his life behind until he discovered her deceptions. Their growing distance was swift, and their despair palpable. It was suspenseful waiting to see if this couple, who had so much chemistry together in the previous book, would be able to find a way back to each other.

The year is 1815, and the plot is gritty, involving the gruesome murder of a young, engaged debutante. A side storyline features Izak, the ten-year-old street urchin who previously served as a courier between Samantha and Chief Constable Peter Kendrick, and is dark and terrifyingly realistic. As the Crofts team up to rescue Izak and the other children with him, they also chase down any source of information about Lady Eleanor Marsh to identify a motive for her murder and suspects. I was glad to see Samantha finally realize that she was just a means to an end for both Harlowe and Kendrick, so maybe her heart could start to mend over their emotional betrayal. With each discovery they make, another plot twist increases the intrigue and suspense.

With its engaging characters, compelling plot, and atmospheric setting, I recommend A TAINTED HEART BLEEDS to historical mystery fans. While this book can be read as a standalone novel, it would be best enjoyed after having read the first book in the series.
