SYNOPSIS:

No Straight Lines to the Stars is the inspiring true story of a young lifeguard who dared to believe his life could reach far beyond the horizon.

On the beaches of Southern California, Ken Kisco learned that preparation saves lives. From rip-current rescues to split-second emergencies, he discovered that courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act in spite of it. Those early lessons in resilience and composure pushed Ken to believe he could accomplish anything . . . including his lifelong dream of reaching the stars.

Through relentless perseverance and unwavering faith, Ken rose into the heart of America’s most advanced space and defense programs, contributing to human spaceflight initiatives and supporting groundbreaking technologies. His unusual start as a lifeguard helped advance his career, distinguishing him from his Air Force and Navy peers. Yet, his toughest challenges were personal—he faced deep disappointment when a space mission was canceled and learned lessons about trust and integrity from a romance-turned-ruse.

Ken’s journey reveals that success is rarely linear. Setbacks became launchpads, adversity became refinement, and purpose became a compass. Part memoir, part inspiration, and part behind-the-scenes look at America’s quest for the stars, this is the unforgettable story of a man who proves that bold dreams, combined with grit and heart, can launch an ordinary life into an extraordinary one.

Book Review - Quiet Valor (Everyday Americans): Acts of Character That Change a Life, a Street, a Community by Larry Nouvel

Quiet Valor (Everyday Americans): Acts of Character That Change a Life, a Street, a CommunityQuiet Valor (Everyday Americans): Acts of Character That Change a Life, a Street, a Community by Larry Nouvel
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Inspirational stories of everyday people who made a difference.

Quiet Valor (Everyday Americans): Acts of Character That Change a Life, a Street, a Community is the third collection of similarly themed short stories by author Larry Nouvel, and each story is a gem of inspiration and personal fortitude. The recountings are compelling reading and immediately evoked some pretty strong emotions in me as I went from one to another.

In this particular volume, Nouvel has collected the stories of a wide variety of regular people: people who, unless you were close to or involved in the specific event or the individual’s life (some of their stories span decades of service), you’ve probably never heard of. They are tales of extended kindness, dedication, and perseverance, as well as moments of courageous actions. The settings and circumstances of the stories are as diverse as their participants and include disaster and emergency response; health and caregiving; education and mentorship; civic duty; inclusion; advocacy and justice; and the everyday times and places where someone just continued to quietly show up and be present.

The author’s writing style is engaging and easy to read, almost like a face-to-face conversation with a friend or a cozy storytelling experience. In addition to the tales themselves, Nouvel provides the titles of the sources he found during his research on his subjects, many of which are online and include accessible links for the reader to click and peruse for themselves. In describing the collection, I think the author said it best when he wrote, “It is the kind of book you might open on a quiet evening when you need to remember what goodness looks like.”

I recommend QUIET VALOR to everyone, fiction and nonfiction readers alike, young and old.

Book Review: Missing at Christmas (Jameson Investigations, #4) by Deena Alexander

Missing at ChristmasMissing at Christmas by Deena Alexander
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just when you think it's safe and can relax, think again!

Missing at Christmas is the fourth book in author Deena Alexander's Jameson Investigations series for the Love Inspired Suspense line and another top-notch inspirational tale of romantic suspense. Freelance journalist Lexi McKenna had fled her childhood home, taking her younger sister, Gia, with her, when she'd discovered their father was the head of a New York criminal organization, intending never to return. However, as the pair constantly moved about, changing their names, staying out of their father's grasp, Gia began to feel differently, longing to return to the city, where she met and fell in love with a man from a rival crime family. When she realized she was pregnant, he left her without a word to continue on her own, with only her older sister for support. Someone else within the city's criminal organizations discovered her and her twin daughters' whereabouts and decided to use one of the babies as leverage against her father, killing Gia in the process. Now Lexi was determined to get the other child to safety and figure out who was behind the kidnapping and do all she could to get her little niece back in her arms.

Lexi, while one tough cookie, is still a loving and protective sister and aunt. She'd gotten the education and skills necessary to support herself and help out Gia and the new babies by working as a freelance journalist, but things were tight. After the death of her mother from cancer, losing Gia is an unimaginable loss.

Noah Thompson, a former NYPD cop, now works for Jameson Investigations and uses all their considerable resources to help Lexi on her mission, but even Jameson can't control the weather in Montana, where they end up looking for safety. He, too, has a vested interest in taking down the Cipriana crime family. His feelings are very close to the surface as he and Lexi bond over their shared goals.

As is a hallmark of this author's work, the story hits the ground running, and the action never lets up. Just when you think Lexi, Noah, and little Alyssa catch a break, think again. Both Noah and Lexi have developed their own faith-filled inner lives and share their deepest common beliefs and discover common ground. They work through their past traumas while trying to rescue Alyssa's twin sister, Avery, from the unknown kidnapper. The surprising resolution makes for a satisfying conclusion to the story.

I recommend MISSING AT CHRISTMAS to readers of fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat, faith-forward romantic suspense.

Book Review - Dare to Dream Scary Fast: The Road to Kona by Wade Wilson

Dare to Dream Scary Fast: The Road to KonaDare to Dream Scary Fast: The Road to Kona by Wade Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Inspirational memoir about the author's amazing triathlon journey.

Dare to Dream Scary Fast: The Road to Kona is a wonderfully inspirational memoir by Texas triathlete and author Wade Wilson. The story of his humble grit and tenacity had me soaking up every word, almost feeling his physical and emotional journey, as he grew from a newbie participant to a world-class competitor.

Wade had an unusual entry into the sport of triathlon, having not grown up in a family where sports were emphasized, and having to overcome a physical challenge with his feet at birth. I loved that he unexpectedly excelled as a pitcher in middle school and ached when he was unable to continue playing the following season. It's impossible to say how far he would have gone, as his perseverance in practicing and pushing himself to improve was already evident by then. He also recognized early that he had a love for participating in team sports, and this passion continued throughout his path to competing in his extreme sport alongside many like-minded enthusiasts. You could feel the joy of the after-race play-by-play sharing by the competitors the following day.

For those looking to enhance their involvement in the sport, Wade enthusiastically, and with scientific backing, details his training and humbly acknowledges his naivete when he was just getting started. I found it personally inspiring that he focused intensely on competing and completing the events he entered, trying to improve his personal bests, rather than being consumed by the desire to win it all. His attitude and encouragement are applicable to all sports and participants at every level of performance. His training successes, sometimes shaving seconds off his previous time, really brought home how even small improvements can add up to significant differences in the end. Additionally, as a spiritual person, he discusses his devotion to God, family, career, and his sport, in that order.

With his easy-going, conversational style, I felt this was a man who genuinely wanted to share his journey to encourage others to follow their own dreams. I recommend DARE TO DREAM SCARY FAST to readers of sports memoirs.

Book Review: Journey to Discover the Heart of God by The Reverend Debbie Womack

Journey to Discover the Heart of God
by
The Reverend Debbie Womack

Religion & Spirituality
Publication Date: April 5, 2024
Page count: 101 pages

Lovely, guided prayer journal to enhance spiritual reflection and understanding.

Journey To Discover The Heart of God is a lovely, guided prayer journal by The Reverend Debbie Womack, an Episcopal deacon in Lubbock, Texas, and veteran author of educational and religious curricula for schools and church classrooms. With its clean lines, simple imagery and layout, and thoughtful and diverse selections of Bible verses, each page is certain to prompt contemplation, spiritual reflection, understanding, and renewal.

The journal has a consistent, easy-to-follow layout prefaced by the author’s suggested methods of progressing through the spiritually-themed prayer prompts. There are eight themes: peace, hope, joy, faith, trust, prayer, forgiveness, and love, with approximately ten pages headed by a Bible verse or verses (taken from the New International Version) devoted to each theme. Following each page’s verse or combination of verses is plenty of clean, lined, white space for writing down one’s thoughts on the reading. After the guided prompts, several additional pages are provided for exploring personal prayers, meditations, and thoughts. However, while the author offers options for employing and getting the most out of its use, the journal would be easily customizable or adaptable to individual preferences and needs.

With its fresh simplicity, ease of use, adaptability, and nice writing spaces begging for your input, I recommend JOURNEY TO DISCOVER THE HEART OF GOD to readers of middle-school age and older who are looking to examine their spirituality and relationship with God and their fellow man.

REVIEW:

5 stars!

An exciting Christmas season romantic suspense novel!

Christmas in the Crosshairs by veteran (and quickly becoming one of my personal favorites) author Deena Alexander packs a satisfying punch and I didn’t want to put this book down. With its engaging characters on the run from danger, I was intrigued, but add in a surprise baby and I was hooked.

Both the main characters have compelling backstories. Jaelyn Reed is a nurse and serves as a volunteer with Seaport Fire and Rescue. After the death of her parents, she discovered she was adopted and is a twin. She is shocked when the sister she’d never met arrives unconscious in the ER in critical condition. Adam Spencer is a criminal defense attorney whose wife and unborn child were murdered and has spent the last five years looking for their killer and whoever was behind the hitman. That someone doesn’t want to be unmasked and Adam has a target on his back.

This is the 4th book in the author’s Love Inspired works and is set, once again, on Long Island. It is an excellent addition to this exciting, faith-forward series. Jaelyn is a recurring character from the previous novel, Kidnapped In The Woods. (See my review here.)

I recommend this highly satisfying read to those who are already fans of Alexander’s Love Inspired books as well as those new to the line; it stands alone very well.

Creatrix Rising: Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women by Stephanie Raffelock

Creatrix Rising: Unlocking the Power of Midlife WomenCreatrix Rising: Unlocking the Power of Midlife Women by Stephanie Raffelock
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Part memoir, part self-help, completely inspiring!

In Creatrix Rising, author Stephanie Raffelock introduces and discusses society’s, including women’s, beliefs about a woman’s place in the world once reaching menopause. Early women’s studies have classified a woman’s life into three ordered stages or archetypes: maiden, mother, and crone. It seems that we as a society have an ingrained sense that a woman’s entire worth culminates during the mother phase, on one’s ability to produce children. Once that is no longer an option, a woman moves into the crone phase, one of less or no value.

As I’ve aged, and as my friends and family have also done so, I have heard that wistfulness in the tone of voice when we talked about entering menopause. It is a change to one’s identity, much like when one retires. (But as I liked to think when I retired, I’m just retiring from HERE (that job), I’m not retiring from life. Frankly, I’ve got stuff to do, places to go, and people to see.) But even before retiring from a job, menopause happens, and the insidious labeling of irrelevance can start to invade. Raffelock proposes we jettison the image of the crone as no longer relevant and replace it with the more accurate archetype of Creatrix: a woman who is comfortable and free to be true to herself and embrace the creativity she has within. The book fleshes out the nature of the Creatrix and how it manifests under current circumstances much better than I can.

The author narrates the audiobook edition of the book herself, and she is captivating. I can absolutely understand why she would be in demand as a speaker (which makes one of her life vignettes regarding her speaking to groups particularly poignant.) Raffelock puts her life on view for the reader, warts and all, describing her personal experiences and revelations on her way to where she is today. Like everyone, she made some mistakes in her life, and she is very candid about hers. This book is inspirational and illustrative rather than simply biographical, but I imagine her complete life story would make for fascinating reading. This book was absorbing, and found it difficult to pause my listening to the audiobook.

Each chapter concludes with a set of outstanding questions for personal reflection and journaling to assist the reader in recognizing the Creatrix in themselves and promote thoughtful consideration. Sometimes the questions were difficult for me to find a starting point to form a response to; others served as an open door. Many made me wish I was listening to the audiobook with friends and family because I wanted the discussion that was sure to follow after.

I will recommend Creatrix Rising to those friends and family and women approaching this pivotal point in their physical life and psyche.
