Book Review: Psychic in Suburbia by K.C. Freeman

Psychic in SuburbiaPsychic in Suburbia by K.C. Freeman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An excellent story with equal parts paranormal and cozy mystery elements.

Psychic in Suburbia is a new paranormal cozy mystery by K.C. Freeman and is fresh, unique, and frighteningly fun. When the ghosts at her friend Krissy’s house suddenly go out of control, it is up to Abby, a closet psychic who has kept her gift a secret from her husband all these years, to step in and intercede. While the ghosts have peacefully coexisted with Krissy’s family for years, with the exception of an occasional prank or two, their upswing in more haunting activity is a deliberate attempt to get the family out of the house and out of harm’s way. Some really nasty beings, “the Others,” have discovered how to breach the barrier between their world and ours, and these demons are intent on death and destruction. Up until now, Abby has studiously avoided acknowledging the ghosts in Krissy’s house and having her secret revealed, and the ghosts don’t like being ignored.

Abby is a fun and relatable stay-at-home mom in her forties. She’s just trying to live her life with her supportive husband and raise good kids, and has consciously avoided using her ability, except on rare occasions when she encounters a spirit that needs assistance to cross over to the other side. She views her psychic ability as something to be hidden, a curse rather than a gift, having been threatened with being sent to a mental hospital as a child if she so much as talked about it or her spectral friends and family. Her tax attorney husband is a confirmed skeptic, and she has never shared this part of herself or her tragic childhood experiences with him.

The setting is a nice, upscale Georgia suburb, full of southern-bred soccer moms who adhere to the cultural norms, and Abby is satisfied with the status quo. The story unfolds from her point of view, and she has an easy, engaging manner; her narrative is full of humor. The literal party gets started immediately at her friend Krissy’s annual Halloween blowout. I liked that the resident ghosts felt an attachment to Krissy’s family and wanted to protect them from “the Others.” Abby’s confrontations with the demonic spirits are more serious in nature and gave me the willies every single time. The story is gripping, with surprises throughout, that had me wanting to read the entire novel cover to cover in one sitting.

I highly recommend PSYCHIC IN SUBURBIA to readers of paranormal cozy mysteries.

SYNOPSIS:

Piper Addison is in it deep. Turns out, finding out how your ghost familiar met her doom is not as easy as it sounds…

Tourist season is over and Orchard Hollow is as peaceful as ever. Piper Addison, the town witch and cafe owner, finally gets to kick back her sneakers and relax. The weather is glorious, her dusty love life has been resurrected, and she’s all caught up on binge watching shows. Nothing can be better!

Well, except for one slight problem.

Piper promised her ghost familiar she’d help find out what landed her in the land of the non-living.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the ghost didn’t have a case of amnesia and a serious need of an attitude adjustment. One thing is for certain, Piper’s familiar didn’t kick the bucket by choice.

Between figuring out the mystery of Stella’s demise, battling a raccoon for cookies, and tracing her mom’s steps hoping to reunite with a father she never met; Piper has her hands full. And this time, even her strange magic might not be enough to get her out of this bind.

Killing Grinds is a paranormal cozy mystery complete with an unlucky witch, a ghost familiar, and a feisty raccoon with a talent for getting into sticky situations.

REVIEW:
5 stars!

Just when things were settling down, coffeehouse owner and resident witch, Piper Addison, draws the attention of a killer!

Killing Grounds is the third book in author A.N. Sage’s delightful paranormal cozy mystery series, the Orchard Hollow Mysteries, and it features one of my favorite characters, Piper Addison’s ghostly familiar, Stella! When things settle down, Piper follows through on her promise to Stella to discover how she met her demise.

While Piper continues to learn about her unusual abilities and try to find a happy medium for both she and the raccoon, Harry Houdini, who has completely taken over Bean Me Up, she finally takes on the task of finding out for Stella (who has amnesia) what happened to cause her death. The resulting situations she finds herself in, dialogue, and especially Piper’s ongoing inner monologue kept me smiling. The relationship with bookstore owner (and vampire) Joe Brooks is S L O W L Y progressing but we’re not there yet. It’s a perfect example of what that old Heinz catsup commercial was touting: Anticipation! (Good Lord, those commercials are almost 50 years old!?!)

I have enjoyed this series so much.

I recommend KILLING GRINDS to fans of the previous books in the series; however, this one could probably be enjoyed by paranormal cozy mystery readers as a standalone (but you’d be missing out on some really good entertainment.)

REVIEW:

5 stars!

Great debut to this new paranormal, cozy mystery series!

Eat, Pray, Hex is the debut novel in author Tara Lush’s new paranormal cozy mystery series, Crescent Moon Mysteries, and isn’t it great to have it launched on Friday the 13th?! From its fun premise to its engaging main character to furry (Freddie Purrcury!) and supportive new friends, I was hooked from page one.

Amelia Matthews is a great character I could immediately get behind and cheer for; that is when I wasn’t laughing! Honestly, I had more fun reading this book than any in a long time. Add this to the compelling cold case that was baffling enough to hold my attention all the way to the reveal, and I was bowled over. Happily, a couple of continuing storylines promise more to come. I will be waiting anxiously for the next book to be published.

Read an excerpt:

1

I stared at the old woman. She was sitting on a rock in the mouth of a cave in front of us. She gawked at me as she sipped from a bottle of green Gatorade. How had a romantic hike up to the mountain lake taken such a strange turn? She told Han and me that her name was Mnemosyne, but that she was called Nemmy.

Nemmy? Could she be the woman from the stories I’d been told? Was that even possible?

Gaspar, the ghost who’d been telling me tales, had a daughter called Nemmy. She was King Gaspar Reuben’s youngest daughter of three. The one who had been tutored in black magic by an evil crone witch and bestowed with dark powers. She had lived a century ago but had partaken of the rumored fountain of youth found on the sinister island of Gladstone. Was this her? If it was, why did she look so old and frail? And how was she here?

I shivered and took a step closer to Han. He put his arm around my shoulders and the weight of it allowed me to exhale.

We had hiked for hours to reach the alpine lake. It was baffling to find an elderly woman sitting this far up. She didn’t look to be the type who’d be able to climb a set of stairs, let alone a mountain. She had no hiking supplies with her, and she wasn’t dressed for it either, in her long dress that seemed more suited for a carriage ride in the Middle Ages. When I asked her if she had hiked up here by herself, she laughed at my question, saying that no, she didn’t get here by herself, but then she changed the subject. As if that wasn’t crazy enough, she told us her name. I’m almost sure she said Nemmy. Her strange appearance, plus that familiar name, made it possible that she was the witch from the stories the ghost had told.

“You are the recently discovered Caldwell relative who fell through the mirror into Destiny Falls,” she said. It wasn’t a question. It was clear that she knew who I was. “How kind of you to deliver yourself right to my front door. I have something especially for you, Helen.”

“It’s Hayden.” I corrected her automatically.

“Ah, right. Hayden.” She made an effort to stand up but was struggling, so Han and I helped her. As soon as she was upright, she raised her arm and pointed her bony finger inches from my face. With her other hand, she pulled a handful of herbs, dust, and dirt from a pocket and tossed it at me. “Ostend mee-hi virtute!” she shouted.

In a flash, Han tugged me by my arm and pushed me behind him. It was a sweet protective gesture that I appreciated in the face of this deranged old woman.

The woman did a panicky little jig, shook her hands wildly, then grabbed in her pocket for more of the mixture. She tried to throw it around Han and into my face. She repeated what she had just said. Only much more exuberantly. Then she stomped her feet in frustration and repeated loudly, “Virtute! Virtute!”

I coughed at the dust and squinted at her. “What is she doing?” I whispered out of the side of my mouth to Han.

“I have no idea. But it sounds like some kind of spell,” he side-whispered back. “Slowly back away.”

The woman who could be Nemmy rolled her eyes. “I’m not a superhero, but you know I can still hear you,” she whispered back to us out of the side of her mouth.

We both turned to look at her. She laughed heartily and we heard her mumbling, “A spell! What will they think of next?” Then her laughter abruptly stopped. Her face sagged and she growled at us to leave her alone.

What if she was just a random senior citizen and her name a coincidence? Maybe I misunderstood her, and she said her name was Emmy. “Are you sure you don’t want us to wait until your hiking partners come back . . . Emmy?” I asked.

She pursed her lips and shook her head. “Your benevolence is exhausting, young woman, and you’re more than I anticipated. Just leave me in peace.” She waved her arm and turned away from us. “Go! Go away!” she yelled. Then she stepped into the entrance of the cave, leaving us standing there gaping at the cavernous opening.

Han and I gathered up our gear and started the trek back down the mountain.

“Well. That was strange,” I said. “I feel badly about leaving her up here alone, but she was adamant, so what else could we do?”

“That’s true,” Han said. He was quiet for a moment, then he stopped walking and turned to face me. “Hayden, while we were standing at the cave, I experienced flashes of old memories returning.”

My jaw dropped and I waited for him to explain. He’d been in an accident not far from here. He had fallen off a cliff and suffered a concussion that caused him to lose his memory of the accident.

“What did you remember?”

“Random bits and pieces. The cave itself seemed familiar, except the one I recall had a wooden door on the front, which seems unlikely up here on the mountain. The old woman’s voice was familiar. I remembered hearing her say that Lazarus had taken control. But that’s it. It’s so frustrating not to be able to remember. I don’t know who Lazarus is, or what he’d taken control of, or who she was talking to. But the cave and her voice. Those I clearly remember.”

“Han! That’s so much more than you remembered before! Maybe all your memories of that day will start to return now?”

“I hope you’re right. It’s difficult having such a hole in my memory. Especially since what happened goes against all my years of training.”

I already knew that. Han’s position as Destiny Falls Special Forces Officer, and his past work in the U.S. Army’s Special Forces, meant that he would not have ignored all his training and fallen off an obvious cliff.

“If the woman is Nemmy, the witch daughter that Gaspar told me about, maybe she had something to do with your accident?”

“Exactly what I was thinking,” Han said.

I was baffled by our strange encounter and concerned about Han’s returning memory indicating the woman might have something to do with his accident. But if I were being perfectly honest with myself, I was mostly annoyed and frustrated that our first official date had been ruined by her sudden appearance. I’d waited so long for our first date, and it was going perfectly until her presence knocked the romance right out of the moment. We had just had our first kiss in the most romantic fairy tale setting by the waterfall. It felt like more than a kiss. It was the merging of two souls. I was basking in the afterglow of it when her cough had stolen our moment. I took a deep breath and refocused.

There was that name again: Lazarus. His name was mentioned on the list that was imprinted on the back of the letter that my missing mother had written me. There was no explanation. Just a row of question marks after his name. He’d also been mentioned in several stories about the ominous island of Gladstone and the illegal scheme to transport people there so that they could search for the fountain of youth. Based on the bits and pieces I’d heard, Lazarus appeared to be a dangerous human being. Who was this mysterious person, and how was he known by this old woman? This enigma. Possibly the king’s wicked daughter, Nemmy.

Han and I discussed all these questions as we made our way down the mountain. After two hours of this he suggested that we take a break, table our discussion for later, and salvage what we could of our first date. We found a beautiful clearing near a small stream and spread out what was left of our picnic. We even made a plan for our second date. The conversation turned happy and once we settled in, I absorbed every minute with a lightness in my heart.

REVIEW:
5 stars!

Yay! Another in the Magical Mystery Book Club series is here!

Secrets and Scallywags is the latest addition to author Elizabeth Pantley’s delightfully entertaining Magical Mystery Book Club Mystery series. She can’t write them quickly enough to suit me. Each new adventure feels like a reunion with old friends who arrive ready to have fun, full of news, and with a story to tell.

In this fifth outing, the group ends up in a tropical location to find pirate ghosts with an SOS and with a new member in tow. One of my favorites of the book club members was Valentina (“Vee” to the club) Torres, who decided to pursue her personal HEA at the end of the last book. I was sad to see her stay behind, but the author has come up with one heck of a plot twist in her replacement.

And speaking of twists, there are plenty as the mystery book club members work to get to the bottom of their new-found friends’ dilemma. As always, they ask good questions and follow the clues as they investigate as an ensemble, with Zell up to some new “tricks.” Although the book can be enjoyed as a standalone, do yourself a favor and read the previous books for the full story of this great group of amateur sleuths.

I recommend SECRETS AND SCALLYWAGS to fans of the series and readers of paranormal cozy mysteries.

The mountain trail was tricky. I was moving slowly through the deep snow. I knew the lake had to be nearby. It was important to find it, but I could barely see ten feet in front of me due to the storm. The trail was steep and slippery, and I was making my way using trekking poles to assess where I should step next. My hands and feet were cold. I heard Latifa calling out to me. Where was she? What was she saying?

“Good morning, Sunshine!” Her lilting voice woke me from my dream. “Happy one-month-a-versary!”

It’s amazing how accustomed I’d grown to my cat’s telepathic voice in my head. I squinted at my fluffy Himalayan sidekick. She was sitting beside me on the bed. I stretched out my arms and gave an extra-loud yawn in her direction, hoping she’d get the hint that she had woken me up.

“Message received. Woke you up. So sorry. Got it.” She squinted at me and whispered, “Not sorry.”

I yawned at her again.

“Bet you forgot today is one month from the earth-shattering day we arrived in Destiny Falls.” Her big, baby blues were focused on me, and her whiskers were twitching. “I have appointed myself Keeper of Your Calendar. You can be so forgetful about celebratory dates.” She shook her furry head as if it were impossible to believe.

I gave another exaggerated stretch and reached over to the bedside table. With a flourish, I presented her with a small, gift-wrapped package.

“Squeeee! You remembered!” She head-butted my face and spun a little circle on the bed, then turned to tear open the package. There was more squealing as she discovered her new, feathered cat toy.

I patted my sidekick’s head and tossed my legs over the side of the bed. A glance at my phone confirmed that Latifa-the-alarm-clock was right on time. I needed to get changed and meet Axel downstairs for a morning jog into town. He was often too busy with work to join me in the morning, so it was a wonderful treat to have some extra time with my newfound brother.

My brother. How I loved the sound of that. After a lifetime as an only child in a tiny three-person family, finding out that I had siblings and a large hidden family was monumental. Add to that a mysterious, magical new world, and I was floating on cloud nine.

The only dark spot was missing my family and my best friend, Luna. I was still trying to figure out how to tell them about Destiny Falls. I’d have to sort this out soon, since my cover story of a working trip to Denmark was nearing its expiration. A month overseas was feasible, but as the timeline continued, I’d need to address my disappearance.

My Nana and Granana would be happy that I was happy. They’d been my biggest cheerleaders my entire life. They always said my happiness mattered most to them. Both my parents disappeared the week I was born, so my grandmother and great-grandmother jumped into raising me. They were dedicated to the job, with an enthusiasm that was a complete contrast to their tiny, delicate appearances. Luna and I referred to them as the Mighty Minis, which was an apt description.

Figuring out how to explain that I wasn’t really in Denmark, but in a magical, hidden town in an unknown location was a whole new ball of wax. Especially since the town was finicky about who it revealed itself to. Any e-mails or texts I attempted to send explaining my location, disappeared into the ether in a wisp of bounces— undeliverable, message not sent, connection lost. Even phone calls suddenly lost the signal. Maybe Axel, my brother—deep sigh of joy—could help me solve this problem.

I turned on the movie channel for Latifa, my furry little movie buff, tucked my ponytail through the back of my baseball cap, and headed out. I strolled slowly down the hallway, so I could absorb the beauty of this amazing home.

Hmm. That was odd. Where was the window seat? It was usually somewhere in my hallway, but it was oddly absent. There was a glorious swatch of sunlight, which is where it normally would be lounging. I snickered. Imagine that. A window seat that can lounge in the sun. Magic touched the Caldwell Crest home in the most interesting ways.

Caldwell Crest is a masterpiece of design. It could be described as a cozy, mansion-sized mountain cabin. I felt embraced by the sweeping staircase made of polished wood. I loved the plank wood floors and ceilings and the gorgeous but understated chandeliers. I adored the stone fireplaces that soared all the way up to the tall ceilings. The earthy colors of the décor were soothing. Even after a month, I was still adjusting to the fact that it was now where I lived.

The home was enchanting. I could almost believe the rumors that it was originally built as a castle back in the 1800s and magically remodeled many times. It’s difficult to understand Caldwell Crest and the mysterious place that was Destiny Falls, especially since the definition seemed to always be changing.

It had been a wild ride of a month since I’d been thrown through a portal and landed here.

Destiny Falls is different from any place I’ve ever known before. I had to let go of my preconceived notions of what defines a town. I still can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that the town isn’t on any map and isn’t accessible by normal means.

You must be called here by either the home or the town. Then you whoosh through time and space, to the accompaniment of a flash of brilliant light, as you tumble through a mirror. It’s a one-way trip. Once you’re here, you are, well . . . “trapped” is a harsh word for such a lovely place. However, it’s accurate. I cannot choose to leave. Destiny Falls controls the comings and goings.

I feel a bit like Alice falling through the mirror into wonderland. Albeit a much nicer wonderland than Alice had to deal with.

I’ve figured out that’s it’s easier if I just go with the flow and don’t try to understand all the nuances of this place.
