SYNOPSIS:

Those who survived the Battle of Grandfather Mountain are said to be in the Hand of the Gods.  No one will need that more than Sange, sister of Arak clan chieftain Javrik.  Drawn to Arman Garimandi, the Omani cavalry officer who saved her people during the siege, she shocks her family by marrying him despite her brother's caution that someday he will break her heart.  Blindly in love, she follows Arman to two different forts where he is ordered.  At the first, danger comes unexpectedly in the form of another woman. And at the second, she finds herself an unwitting pawn--possibly even a prisoner--between two powerful nations.

READ AN EXCERPT:

The room was completely inebriated, as if everyone had finally acknowledged it and given up any attempt at appearing sober.  Musicians began having brew poured down their throats by helpful dancers so they wouldn’t have to take their hands off their instruments.  The music never stopped, abetted by two of the girls singing in guttural Alcinic that sounded more like a war chant than song, and Sange began to suspect the native music had begun that way.

“This is what you call fun?” she asked Arman, but she was smiling broadly, holding onto him, beginning to enjoy his strength that kept her upright despite everything.

“Best thing next to war,” he half-shouted over some wild noisemaking.

Suddenly, there was a resounding crash audible even above the other noise in the room, and a babble of voices, half alarmed and half amused.  Horrified, Sange looked at one corner of the dance area, where two men were locked together, wrestling among the remains of a roast pig that had slid off the table they had upended.

“Someone tried to cut in,” Arman explained, shouting directly into her ear.

“They what?”

“Wanted to dance with somebody’s partner, and he objected.”

Several more responsible younger officers were wading into the mess, collaring the drunken combatants, pulling them off each other while the lady in question, knocked flat, was gallantly helped to her feet, but not before displaying everything beneath her petticoats.

“Throw ‘em in the brig!” someone shouted, to the accompaniment of cheers and applause, while staff hurried in to clean up the pig and the gentlemen in question were frog-marched out.  Expecting some sense of order in the chaos, Sange looked over to where she had last seen Arman’s commanding officer and his lady.  They were merely standing fast, looking amused.

“What will they do to them?” she asked.

“Sober them up,” he replied.  “Probably give them double duty tomorrow.  It’s torture when you have a hangover, believe me.”

“That’s all?”

“Well, what more can they do to them?  They already sent them to Tipol.”

FROM THE AUTHOR:

Today we are asking the author - "Describe your book cover and how it came about."

That question was written for this book, so I’ve got to go with it.

Book I of the series, Light of the Gods, came along so easily I don’t think either the cover artist or I could believe it.  She found a cover model’s picture that I swear looked like a very young Thor, I described the scenery, she found it, and that was that.

Book II, Hand of the Gods?  No way.  We struggled.  No one can quite appreciate what goes into creating the perfect book cover unless they’ve tried.  So, the next time you see a cover you love, believe that a great deal went into it.

Cue the rescuer.  Model Vikkas Bhhardwajnot only helped us with pictures but even with creating a video for Hand of the Gods, which I hope you have seen or will look up.  The background—and I would seriously like to know where that arch exists—gave us quite a tussle in trying to formulate a banner, but it was worth it.

It’s on my author page and my blog.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Miriam Newman says, "I fell in love long ago with fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends, as well as stories of heroes and battles.  Ancient Celtic writings were my special passion, along with the Roman Empire, Roman Britain, the Norman invasion of England, and tales of the Vikings.  My first book emerged when I was an...ahem...youthful 52.  Well, I’m not 52 any more and up to 34 books and it’s been a great run.

Retired from many years in social work, now I pass my days writing, researching and living with a pack of highly demanding rescue dogs.  I write in every genre I please and you can see my books at www.miriamnewman.com."

How do you engage with fans of your work?

Miriam Newman said...

Hi, Traciem. One important way is to respond to the questions and comments they leave during blog tours! So thanks for your question. They are also welcome to visit my website and blog, The Celtic Rose, where there are contact links to email me. I send out a newsletter whenever I have a new release, sometimes giving updates on the rescue work with which I'm also involved, since many readers are interested in that. Proceeds from my books are donated to a rescue with which I have a longstanding relationship. My Facebook pages and Twitter link are also important. Although I don't engage directly with those who leave reviews, I definitely read them.
