WINTER'S SEASON

by R.J. Koreto

July 8, 2025 Cover Reveal

Synopsis:

Winter's Season by R.J. Koreto

In 1817 London, Before the Police, There Was Captain Winter.

London, 1817. A city teeming with life, yet lacking a professional police force. When a wealthy young woman is brutally murdered in an alley frequented by prostitutes, a shadowy government bureau in Whitehall dispatches its "special emissary"―Captain Winter. A veteran of the Napoleonic Wars and a gentleman forged by chance and conflict, Winter is uniquely equipped to navigate the treacherous currents of London society, from aristocratic drawing rooms to the city's grimmest taverns.

Without an army of officers or the aid of forensic science, Winter must rely on his wits and a network of unconventional allies. His childhood friend, a nobleman, opens doors in high society, while a wise Jewish physician uncovers secrets the dead cannot hide.

But Winter's most intriguing, and potentially dangerous, asset is Barbara Lightwood. Shrewd, beautiful, and operating as a discreet intermediary among the elite, Barbara shares a past with Winter from the war years. Their rekindled affair is fraught with wariness; she offers intimate information crucial to his investigation, but guards her own secrets fiercely. Like Winter, she is both cunning and capable of danger.

From grand houses to dimly lit streets, death stalks Captain Winter. He must tread carefully to unmask a killer, navigate a web of secrets and lies, and perhaps, in the process, save his own soul.

CHERYL HOLT dazzles readers once again with her new two-book SISTERS duet! It’s two fun, fast-paced, and dramatic tales of love forevermore…

After barely surviving his final tour of duty, his view of life has been altered. He simply likes to loaf, gamble, and revel in every decadent activity he can find.

THEODORA CRONENWORTH is a dreamer and idealist who thinks the world should be a much fairer place, particularly for women. She works hard to improve women’s lives, and she definitely believes prominent men should behave better.

When Jackson meets Theodora, he’s humored by her energy and pluck, but he’s a confirmed bachelor who doesn’t think he could ever fall in love. With one look, he’s completely smitten, and with Theodora rattling his debauched existence, nothing will ever be the same.

WITH ONE KISS

WITH ONE KISS by Cheryl Holt

Fall in love with CHERYL HOLT all over again! She delivers the companion novel in her fun and dramatic SISTERS duet! It’s another tale of passion, forbidden romance, and love forevermore…

CHARLOTTE CRONENWORTH was born into a rich, prominent family, but after her father’s death, her fortunes plummeted. To support herself, she’s been teaching at a girl’s boarding school. Just as she’d begun to feel secure and complacent, the school went bankrupt, so it was closed and the students sent home. She’s been cast to the winds of fate, and she’s hoping to find employment as a governess, but she’s not optimistic. A woman on her own is never safe in her personal circumstances.

WINSTON WAINWRIGHT is Earl of Dartmouth. His title is one of the oldest and most esteemed in the kingdom, and he’s a rich, pompous snob. When Winston meets Charlotte, there’s an instant attraction, and he’s enough of a rogue to feel entitled to act on it. He’ll be delighted to trifle with her, but she’s so far beneath him. He would never have honorable intentions. But with one kiss, he’s totally ensnared, and she just might be the one woman who can make him happy forever…

CHAPTER ONE

Theodora Cronenworth, called Theo by her family, strolled down the London street toward her home. She’d just attended the latest rally of the Matron’s Brigade, and she was lost in thought, struggling to deduce why she was still a member.

The group claimed to have begun a crusade against the dandies and vixens of the demimonde. The city had become a den of iniquity and they were determined to clean it up. Illicit conduct was rampant, and from the most toplofty aristocrat to the lowliest opera dancer, people were openly wallowing in sin and vice.

There seemed to be no limit to their depravities and civic leaders ignored what was happening. In fact, many of them were the worst offenders. So the Brigade had been formed.

The ladies had shrouded themselves in the mantle of moral indignation, and their purported goal was to root about decadence, but from Theo’s perspective, they simply argued amongst themselves over which direction to take. They also liked to point fingers as to who was sufficiently devoted to the cause and who wasn’t.

When they finally chose a target, it was a female who had no power or rich friends to protect her. The Brigade liked to punch down at those who couldn’t fight back and their focus enraged Theo.

In her view, if a woman was lured into wickedness, it was always the fault of a corrupt man. She constantly suggested they shame some of the scoundrels who instigated so much of the trouble, but the group wouldn’t hear of it. She’d flat-out been apprised that they didn’t dare harass any important males, and their cowardice infuriated her. None of their motives were true and they were a gaggle of hypocrites.

Her stepmother, Georgina, had encouraged her to join. Theo was clever with words, and she’d been tasked with writing pamphlets that would spread their message, but any message she penned was watered down to irrelevance.

Though she never discussed it, her own family had been destroyed by a cad when she was a little girl. Her mother had run away with him and vanished forever. Theo had never learned his name or any other information about him, but he’d never been held to account for his mischief.

Shouldn’t he have been? Could any prominent gentleman ever be forced to answer for his dissolution? Shouldn’t women demand better behavior from them?

Well, if the tepid antics of the Matron’s Brigade were any indication, no changes would ever occur.

She shoved the issue out of her mind. It was a beautiful May afternoon, the sky clear, the temperature balmy, and it was silly to waste any energy fretting about the situation. She wasn’t the Brigade’s prisoner and she didn’t have to continue to participate.

Review of With One Kiss:

5 stars!

Another nobleman's mother behaving badly!

In With One Kiss, author Cheryl Holt concludes the two-book set of A Sisters Duet, wonderful Regency romances filled with excitement, angst, love and lust, and a double dose of perfidious moms! The intertwined stories were robustly plotted with randy, confirmed bachelors who meet their matches in the Cronenworth sisters.

Charlotte, the younger of the two Cronenworth sisters, reacted much differently to their change in fortunes on the death of their father than her older sister, Theodora. While Theo had gone with the flow and acted as the peacemaker of the surviving family members, Charlotte had burned with constant rage. She'd railed against her fate and had willfully forged her own path, escaping her stepmother's control at the earliest opportunity. She'd quarreled with Theo and taken a low-status teaching position at a boarding school, much to the toplofty family's chagrin. It was not the first, nor would it be the last scandal to beset the Cronenworths.

Winston Wainwright, Lord Dartmouth, is the spoiled young patriarch of one of the kingdom's oldest and noblest lineages, a member of the inner circle surrounding the throne. An established roué, he's soon to give up his bachelorhood to wed the icy and conniving Lady Jasmine Clement. Win meets Charlotte Cronenworth when she shows up on his doorstep with an abandoned young pupil when their boarding school abruptly closes, the only clue to her origins being the name of his coastal estate in her file. He assumes the girl is his deceased younger brother's love child. Feeling responsible for Holden's death, he is determined to do right by the young girl, but his desire for Charlotte is anything but noble. While used to his pleasures and the adoration of every woman he meets, he has become besotted with Charlotte, who doesn't immediately succumb to his charms.

The main romantic plot contains a couple of great secondary storylines and circles back to events left unresolved in the previous book. I enjoyed Charlotte's and Win's initial meeting; he's rude, imperious, and entitled, and she stands up to him. Her dialogue is clever, biting, and priceless. As in the previous book, the Dowager mom is a devious force to be reckoned with, but she's also met her match in Charlotte and Win's eventual determination to get what he truly wants. Jasmine is a scheming shrew without a heart, and I was shocked when Jake Boggs's true position in the Wainwright family was initially revealed. However, the resolution to the duet of tales is ultimately satisfying.

I recommend WITH ONE KISS to romance readers who enjoy strong female protagonists, conniving noble ladies, and a touch of spice in a Regency setting.

Review of With One Look:

5 stars!

One of the best of the genre!

With One Look is the first of acclaimed romance author Cheryl Holt’s new duology, A Sisters Duet, and what a fabulous beginning it is! A young woman ponders her uncertain future in Regency London if she decides to dissolve a lackluster engagement to her stepbrother. At the same time, an injured career soldier, elevated to the ranks of the nobility, finds himself with too much time on his hands and no real purpose in life except gambling. With one look, however, both their lives are destined to change course forever.

At 24 years of age, Theodora Cronenworth is sweet, kind, and somewhat naïve; her personality shaped by her mother’s abandonment when she was a small child and by her father’s subsequent cold neglect. She believed her stepmother’s claim that her father died without a will or making arrangements for her or her sister’s futures, and was dependent upon her for her every need. She and her sister are effectively estranged since Charlotte left home to take a teaching position at a boarding school. It is implied that Theo was denied the education she desired, but she is well-informed and favors a more modern life for women. The reality of her dependency and need to have a man in her life for protection or advocacy, a predicament for all women at that time, was really brought home.

Sergeant Jackson Bennett, now the Earl of Thornhill by award of the King, spends his time gambling to support his long-time mistress, Lola, and his father, Cedric. The injury that ended his army career causes him constant pain and prevents him from riding; he’s a man without a mission in life. Jackson is kind to those less fortunate and an avowed bachelor for life. His continued relationship with Lola is strained, but he avoids ending things with her because their liaison burned her bridges with her family, and he knows he’s as much to blame as she is.

Theo and Jackson have an immediate attraction to one another. While Theo firmly believes no good will come of their knowing each other, she is irresistibly drawn to him, guilt-ridden because of her engagement to her stepbrother, Arthur. Jackson is infatuated early and takes every chance to further their acquaintance (except to break it off with Lola). Sounds like a straightforward storyline, right? But plot twist after plot twist shocked and surprised me, and the basic story quickly became one of the best I’ve ever read in this beloved genre. Those who started as obnoxious but seemingly harmless characters turned out to be hiding devious pasts, self-serving agendas, and the potential for true evil. Surprising past connections among other characters were waiting to jump out at critical points in the story. I read the last 75 percent of the story in one sitting, and now I can’t wait to get on with the next book!

I recommend WITH ONE LOOK to romance readers who enjoy suspense and a touch of spice in a Regency setting.

READ AN EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Swearing under his breath, he decided he should go. He took one last look at the back door. Then it opened.

Acton was riveted to the ground. He couldn’t have moved if the garden were on fire.

Persey closed the door slowly before turning and making her way into the garden. She looked about, and it took all Acton’s control not to race out into the open and snatch her into his arms.

Instead, he made a sound like an owl, hooting several times. The noise drew her attention, and as her gaze settled in his direction, she walked straight toward him.

Acton’s heart thundered as she neared the tree behind which he was stationed. When she was close enough, he whispered, “I’m here, behind the tree.”

She found him a moment later. “Are you supposed to be an owl?”

“It was all I could think of to get your attention. And it worked.”

“It did indeed, though I don’t think an owl hoots with such intensity.”

He smiled, glad that he could at last flirt with her without incurring her wrath. “They might if they were trying to attract a beautiful, captivating female owl.”

“Is that how you see me?” she asked, and he knew the question was genuine. Little lines marred her forehead. “Or is this just something you say when you meet a woman alone in the dark?”

His smile faded. “I thought about that as I was standing here—I mean, my being here. I nearly left, but then I saw you come outside, and I was unable to move.”

“Do you mean that too?” she whispered.

“With every fiber of my being. I know you’ve no reason to believe me. And you’ve every reason to think I’ve done this a dozen times, all with the goal of seduction.”

“Only a dozen?”

A marquess with an inheritance problem.

When his father dies, Raph Bromley, new Marquess of Waneborough inherits more than his father’s title. He inherits a crumbling estate, an ocean of debt, a valuable art collection, and a most unusual stipulation in his father’s will. No piece in the art collection can be sold unless Raph first creates a brilliant work of art. But his imagination is as nonexistent as his artistic experience, and that’s never going to happen.

Thank goodness for heiresses. Raph will simply marry for money. Problem solved. Except his mother’s new companion, a dark-haired, clever, poor beauty tests his resolve and makes him think …

Maybe painting won’t be so hard.

(It is…)

A companion with no home of her own.

Matilda Bellvue has worked as a companion for fifteen years, but she’s inherited a cottage in Cumbria, and she’ll soon make it her home. She plans to spend her days reading scandalous novels and redecorating every room. But first, she must complete one final job, serving as companion to the Marquess of Waneborough’s mother.

Her task is simple: help the grieving marchioness, argue with the hard-headed marquess, avoid matchmakers, and resist spying on naked men swimming in the lake. Above all else, she must not fall in love with her employer, a man who makes her feel like she's finally found home.

Because she has no money. And he must marry rich. And that way only lies heartache.

Funny, sweet, and definitely steamy, book 1 in the Art of Love series is a late Regency romance that's as lighthearted as it is hot!
