REVIEW:
Murder returns to Whitewater Valley!
Purrfectly Framed is the second book in veteran storyteller Ruth J. Hartman’s Mobile Cat Groomer Mystery series, where small Whitewater Valley is once again visited by murder. With her friend, Evan Lakes, under suspicion by the sheriff, cat groomer Molly Stewart is determined to find the real killer.
Molly, the owner of the cat grooming business, is fun and engaging and a stalwart friend to have at your back. Even when threatened to stay out of the latest investigation OR ELSE, she is still committed to clearing her friend’s name.
Whitewater Valley grows as readers are introduced to more of Molly’s friends and clients. While she pursues clues on her own, she’s surrounded by some great supporting characters like her assistant, Veronica, and best friend and town librarian, Jillian, who has a crush on Suspect Number One. However, the most ‘suspect’ character for me is Sheriff Lawrence King, who doesn’t instill the confidence required of a good, competent lawman. The two older ladies, Florence and Lottie, were an absolute delight, and I love all the cat companions central to the series.
The plot moves quickly with the victim’s body found in Evan’s photographic studio’s darkroom in the first chapter. There is an antagonistic history between Evan and the deceased just waiting to be discovered by the sheriff, so the tension begins immediately. With a couple of townspeople acting suspiciously and the convenient reappearance of one of Evan’s old flames, plenty of red herrings are sprinkled throughout the story to try and rule out. Plot twists kept me surprised and guessing; in the end, I was well entertained.
I recommend PURRFECTLY FRAMED to cozy mystery readers,
especially those who like cat-themed stories.
